Superstars: Old fashioned or classic?

New colleague at my part time job, where we mostly wear comfortable shoes out of necessity.
Colleague asks me what my star sign is (puzzling enough to begin with), then states that my star sign are 'the trendsetters'.
I say I'm more old-fashioned than trendy.
She laughs and says she noticed straight away. I assumed she might have been referring to my flared trousers (with crease), 60s pendant necklace and 60s belt with big buckle, fair enough – but no, apparently, it was the shoes.

I was wearing adidas Superstars, black all over without the stripes. She was wearing white Reebok high tops with black tights.

I'm baffled and confused.
Are Superstars old-fashioned? Rather than 'a classic'? Or are 'classics' old-fashioned?

Superstars are hugely fashionable in my part of the world, especially with 10 - 16 year olds. They're all wearing them in all black for school shoes, and have other styles for out of school.

White high trainers with tights sounds awful.

Beadieeye · 11/08/2017 10:12

They are an all-time classic, and still popular with all the instagrammers I follow for style inspiration 🙈
I wouldn't wear Reeboks, maybe the really young ones wear them in an ironic/retro/fashiony way?

Venella · 11/08/2017 10:29

poppy I'm in my early 40s but for a second there, it did feel like being back at school and my shoes weren't "in".

I still think they're a classic for people of all/most ages. Am I deluded?

Pretty much every teen and pre teen wear Adidas superstars - can't be that old fashioned!

BoredOnMatLeave · 11/08/2017 10:59

I think they are still quite fashionable, but it might have been with your flared trousers. I think the pinterest/instagrammers just wear with skinnies/leggings/etc.

I'm sure you looked great though OP, I would wear superstars but trainers don't suit me at all.

MsRinky · 11/08/2017 11:01

I have half a dozen pairs of Superstars and I am very cool, although I am not trendy.

Venella · 11/08/2017 11:38

Wow, I've gone from old-fashioned to, erm, fashioned in less than 24 hours!
Thank you for your nice and reassuring comments!
Yes, I'm aware my trousers aren't exactly Le Dernier Crie (or are they so backward that they're already forward...?) but I feel that with skinny trousers they make my feet look massive even though I don't have big feet, nor skinny legs.
They're some sort of limited edition I think.

Superstars are a classic, as are....Reebok Classics. I have them in gold.

TartanDMs · 11/08/2017 11:47

DS17 lives in his Superstars. You aren't old fashioned.

PNGirl · 11/08/2017 12:02

They aren't old fashioned. They kind of are meant to make your feet look massive though, with the very round toe and chunky sides. I like that about them as it makes my legs and ankles look thinner!

poppym12 · 11/08/2017 12:58

Comfiest footwear I own. I'm old and couldn't give a rat's ass if they're fashionable or not. I like them, they're comfortable, I wear them.

Venella · 11/08/2017 14:52

PNgirl didn't occur to me that it works the other way round! Very clever!

Poppym12, I like your style.

Btw, colleague us wearing 8-hole Doc Martens today. Not a fan myself, but they're definitely a classic, too. Just never met anyone who wears both white Reeboks and DMs.

OP posts:
PNGirl · 11/08/2017 15:01

I wear all sorts, but I'm a footwear buyer so spend a lot of time thinking about shoes. I own white Superstars, 2 pairs of 8-hole DMs, a pair of DM chelseas, Converse, bronze New Balance, black and white Nikes, Supergas... the lot!

squoosh · 11/08/2017 15:12

I say I'm more old-fashioned than trendy.
She laughs and says she noticed straight away.

Weird.

But trainer geeks can be a very snobby bunch. A particular pair of trainer scan be coveted one month and be fashion suicide the next. Apparently.

Venella · 11/08/2017 15:56

Beadieeye Colleague is young but not 'ironic fashion' young. (I think. Where's the cut off point?)

PNgirl sounds cool, a relative does that too. Shows are veery important!

I must admit I felt taken aback by the whole exchange and should probably care less...

*Shoes not shows, obviously

ChickenBhuna · 11/08/2017 16:05

I don't know about the trainer's (wear what you like imho) but if someone asked my star sign I'd probably lie and see if they found a link between that sign and what they thought they knew about me.

I do like to amuse myself though.

ChickenBhuna · 11/08/2017 16:05

*trainers

Venella · 11/08/2017 16:36

Chickenbhuna I was close to doing that but asked her to guess instead and the supposed characteristics of the sign she thought I am is almost the opposite of what mine is supposed to be like. Followed up with 'either that or (something completely different again)'. Okaaay....
