Clothes for a 37 year old, capsule wardrobe?

So I'm edging towards 40 and I'm not sure quite what to wear anymore. 'Fashion' looks cheap and tacky, but then at the other end of the scale I don't want to look frumpy. I've lost my way. I'm a SAHM and I like the casual look, but I feel a mess when I dress comfortably.

What are you favourite staples and places to shop? Don't have a lot of money at the moment with not working currently.

Zara has some beautiful pieces right now

SageYourResoluteOracle · 05/08/2017 00:24

Yup- Zara is brilliant at the moment. I've also done well recently with bits from Warehouse and actually a couple of things from H&M after really not liking anything there for a while. I'm almost 39 and I work part time but can wear smart casual to work so there's a lot of cross-over between work and school-run days.

I've really enjoyed the capsule wardrobe series on The Spike: onthespike Lots of ideas for casual dressing and how to combine basics and dress them up with accessories

Uniqlo all the way

On the spike really was useful for me. I find that its the small details that matter. So although I'm wearing casual clothes I still style them. For example turn back cuffs on shirts, wear a belt use a half tuck in jeans and think about what I'm putting together. That way although I may be wearing jeans and a shirt it still looks as if I have made an effort.

Oooh- just had a squizz at The Spike! Why did I not know about this??

I'm the same age as you and also a SAHM. I also found I lost my way with clothes after having a baby. I've recently got some really nice bits from oasis (khaki chinos, tops with decent sleeves, long cardigans). I wear this with superga trainers and it makes me feel comfy but a bit more stylish that I was previously feeling. I always make an effort with my jewellery, manicure my nails & I feel that this makes a massive difference to my appearance.

Thanks everyone, I'm looking up your suggestions tonight and have just found the website. Glad it's not just me whose lost the plot with clothes.
