Can I salvage this broken thumb nail? (Pic)

Excuse farmers wife thumb close up. I have longish nails for the first time in about 2 years, but inevitably they're starting to break etc. Is there anything I can do to save this one? Not least because it's broken below the quick and will be bloody painful if I just peel it off?! Tia.

Have you got any super glue? I often use It as a quick fix when I get a break

I'd cut as much of it off as possible and file it smooth. You might be lucky and the broken part will stay on until it reaches above the level of the pink part. Just keep filing it gently as it grows.

If you keep it long you risk catching it and ripping it lower down the nail bed (bitter experience here).

I'm sure I'd seen something about using the bag from the tea bag with clear nail polish to save a broken nail.

The trouble with trying to fix it is there's a weak line all the way across which means any gentle knock will take it off.

  1. cut a small piece of loo roll or tissue to size in order to cover the torn nail
  2. carefully place loo roll over tear
  3. drop nail glue or superglue over the loo roll to bond
  4. repeat if necessary
  5. file carefully to smooth
  6. cover with nail polish if you like

This has worked numerous times for me, but be prepared to repeat every couple of days if necessary if you 'work' with your hands a lot!

  • I should have mentioned, you don't have to cover the whole nail... Just the torn part and surrounding area. In your case I'd aim for about 1/4 coverage.

Ooh thanks for the tips all. I do have some superglue I think. I'll give it a go.
