Can I go grey? (Pics)

Feeling lacklustre. Think it's my hair, aside from the ageing, (55). I'm posting "good" pics only. Tend to wear makeup daily, even if just blush as I have shocking circulation and look like death warmed up.

You look fantastic for 55, and your hair is lovely!

BifsWif · 27/07/2017 22:13

Sorry I didn't answer, I love the colour but it looks high maintenance. It would require a lot of upkeep, and you could damage your hair with the amount of processing it would need to get to that colour. I wouldn't do it.

SukiTheDog · 27/07/2017 22:14

Here's one today, not quite so glam on the coast walk with mutt.

Anyone know what going grey (as in the modelled pics) entails/ does to your hair?

I'm 42 and stopped dying two years ago. I didn't really know what colour it'd come out - certainly nothing like your 3rd picture!

I am about 80%white/grey and it suits my colouring perfectly. You look like you have a pink undertone to your skin (or blush?!) as I do. I also wear lipstick everyday to avoid the 'dead look'. (Honestly i have blue lips!).

It turns out I have dark brown-almost-black underneath hair, more so on my right side. Then light-steel grey, then white. In some light I have what looks like light brown highlights! Only at the front. People are forever asking if i have dyed it.

My hair is now in beautiful condition as I don't play with it anymore. It is in an inverted bob. I have absolutely no regrets.

Would you strip the colour and do blonde highlights as the grey comes through? Cut it short? Just grow it out and have a badger line? I resembles Mrs Munster for a year, but hey ho.

You can always dye it back if you don't like how it looks.

ProudBadMum · 27/07/2017 22:18

Grey needs a a pretty white base so bleach and toners to get it to an base for it.

If the base is wrong even slightly you will go green.

The upkeep is ridiculous.

You can use a purple shampoo. Osmo super silver is amazing for keeping greys grey.

But being blunt, it can fuck your hair.

LilaoftheGreenwood · 27/07/2017 22:19

Wow I hope I look like that at 55! I can see something very angular, modern and silvery grey looking great, you could carry that off definitely.

But tbh I think most people would look at that hair as an asset, it's wavy and blonde and silky and in good condition, it's kind of a no-brainer. Is it a question of being a bit bored and wanting a change, and would a different cut have the same effect? I'm going through same at an earlier stage, am 38 and suddenly realise I've looked basically the same for 12 years and it's boring (and I don't look as good as the original version!)

elQuintoConyo · 27/07/2017 22:20

Blush thrrad moved on!

Wpuld you grow out grey that you have, or actually dye it grey?

I think to dye it grey it needs to be bleached twice, then.. I don't actually remember. But i think it is a huge faff!

If you wear normal clothes (and i mean not Hotter shoes and polyester slacks from tjw back of a magazine), then you will be a well-dressed spry 55yo with funky hair Grin

SukiTheDog · 27/07/2017 22:34

ElQuinto I am Vampiric..... I have blue lips and a deathly pallor all of the time. I don't tan. Don't burn. In the day, even if a no makeup day, I have to wear my Clinique Iced Lotus (same blush for years as others make me look Aunt Sally). Thing is, my hair is mouse brown, as yet no grey. My sister is silvery grey and dyes it blonde which to me, is sacrilege. Your natural colouring sounds wonderful but I think I have a long wait to go a lovely grey naturally.

ProudBadMum thanks fir clarifying. It fucks up your hair. Thought so.

Lila, I think ageing has suddenly caught up with me and I'm possibly grasping at straws. Which is what my hair will look like if I bleach it and then go grey artificially 😊

You could get some silver highlights over your lighter tones though.

Even a purple shampoo can do that for you.

Doing it gradually will be kinder to your hair

SukiTheDog · 27/07/2017 22:42

😄. Want to look .....

Not ...

This sums up grey hair nicely...

TheHiphopopotamus · 27/07/2017 22:50

I know someone who has gone grey by going to the hairdressers. It looks amazing now, but it's taken her about six months to get here and it's been some pretty funny colours in between. It's what puts me off doing it even though I probably have quite a bit of 'natural' grey under the dye job.

LenGoodmansPetLlama · 27/07/2017 22:57

You're beautiful

Dowser · 27/07/2017 23:06

We have similar hair op. Although I'm 10 years older, I've just started to get a bit more grey.
I'm getting my highlights done next week.
I'm not ready for grey yet.

Nospringflower · 27/07/2017 23:15

I think you look great as you are. No way should you be embracing the grey yet!

SukiTheDog · 27/07/2017 23:28

😄 thanks for the replies. Need to be wary I think!

Dreya · 27/07/2017 23:39

Don't change a thing. You look amazing just as you are, honestly.

I think you ladies could be right. To remove all colour from my hair could mean the need for more makeup, to liven me up. Hard work! Was in Boits today and saw a lady with it done. It looked amazing but, she had quite a natural rosy complexion, which sadly I don't. She did say that toning shampoos were a necessary to keep the silvery grey look and it HAD taken a toll on condition. But then, she said she'd always done different colours on her (shorter than my) hair but probably wouldn't if hers were longer. Will just have "more of the same" in a few weeks.

newdocket · 29/07/2017 16:34

I think you look great as you are. That's not to say you wouldn't look great with grey hair BUT I would say that everything you've said about your complexion makes me wonder whether grey/white hair wouldn't exacerbate that. Your hair looks in great condition. So I think if I' were you I'd be risk averse and stick with what you have. Which as I say, is lovely!

PollyPerky · 29/07/2017 16:38

No. Most definitely not grey.
You are very pretty. If you want to do anything with your hair, warm it up slightly with a mix of dark caramel and a slightly deeper shade.

Grey will be too pale and drain your skin and make you look much, much older.

PollyPerky · 29/07/2017 16:42

Your hair is not mouse. It's dark blonde and has some warmth to it - hints of red in the first pic. It's very similar to my colour .
