Can I go grey? (Pics)

Feeling lacklustre. Think it's my hair, aside from the ageing, (55). I'm posting "good" pics only. Tend to wear makeup daily, even if just blush as I have shocking circulation and look like death warmed up.

sorry- did you mean your natural colour was mousy? Are the pics showing it highlighted?

SukiTheDog · 29/07/2017 16:58

PollyPerky do you mean this shade of thing?

I think you look great also and you have lovely hair. I do think grey will age you I'm sorry, it will put you firmly in what stereotypically people think mid fifties looks like.

Yes some people do grey brilliantly, but the reality is for many it's very aging, expecially when not made up.

EnidButton · 29/07/2017 17:23

Nah. Don't go grey. Your hair has that polished look that so many threads have been started about.

Out of the three pics you posted last, I think the middle one would suit you as it's closest to what you have now. You'd need a really good hair stylist to avoid it coming out like picture 3 which is a bit 2003.

EnidButton · 29/07/2017 17:24

Meant to add in there; you look really good now. You don't need to change anything.

PollyPerky · 29/07/2017 17:30

Yes! More like the far right one rather than the long wavy blonde pic but depends what your natural colour is and if you have any grey already. If you have some grey then the darker one may not work as it would need a lot of root retouching but generally yes, that kind of thing.

Your hair looks pretty much that shade in your first photo though (love the location!)

Is it not?

batteriesgone · 29/07/2017 17:32

OP, I like your current colour and yy to you looking absolutely lovely.

May I ask where those lovely pictures were taken?

MargotLovedTom1 · 29/07/2017 17:38

Blimey, if you have no grey naturally then embrace that and do NOT dye it grey!!! I have let my hair go grey because it was such a faff to cover it. It looks OK now I'm getting used to it, and people have been pleasantly surprised after an initial Shock about my not dyeing any more, BUT I wouldn't have chosen this over my original brown hair. No way!!

SirVixofVixHall · 29/07/2017 17:57

Well you are beautiful so I think you can do pretty much anything to your hair!
Am slightly confused as to whether you simply want to go natural, and you have a significant amount of white naturally, or whether you want to colour your hair silver, which is a different issue? I have a friend who is 48, she had naturally very dark, thick hair when she was younger, and it is now naturally mainly white. She sometimes puts a slightly warm rinse on it. She has blue eyes, and it looks amazing. Really lovely.
If you are thinking of colouring it silver, then it is a lot of maintenance, and so that is the thing to factor in. If you merely want to leave it to nature then go ahead, it will be beautiful.

ilovecherries · 29/07/2017 18:29

I'm just a bit older than you, and very similar hair (colour, length and style). I was tempted to go grey recently but my hairdresser point blank refused. She said I was probably 10 years away from having enough natural grey not to make it a processing nightmare. (And to be honest, if I follow the genetics from my parents, probably nearer 20. They were both well into their 70s before they went grey.) She more or less told me to go to amother salon if I wanted my hair wrecked. But everything is fading a bit, (complexion, lips, hair) and I def long for a sharper, Helen Mirren type look, but no idea how to get it. Sorry, that was just an empathetic ramble. No point to it at all!

SukiTheDog · 29/07/2017 22:50

Ilovecherries I think you have a good hairdresser there. Some would just do the job, collect the cash and you end up with not being sble to get a comb through your hair!

SirVix and Margo, I have no grey, whatsoever at the moment so, in much the same way I wanted curly hair as a teenager and had a perm in 1980 which was a frizzy, mahoosive disaster, I covet brighter hair because I am a very nondescript "mouse" at heart. We always want what we can't have 😊

Batteries, Cape Cornwall. Walking holiday on the coast, with the dog! Beautiful, despite the rain 😊

Enid, thanks. Sometimes, you need to hear someone say..."leave it, it looks good, as is". Appreciate what you have, I guess. For the days I look dismal (too much stress/wine/life-stuff) I should just remember the days when, in a good light and after a lovely walk in the woods with my girl, life is actually, sweet.

I went grey - my hair is naturally very very dark brown, and it took approx 9 months to get it white enough via full head bleach to get it silver / grey

It was amazingly fun, and I got stopped in the street by people commenting on it - I think often they thought I was brave to have let myself go grey at such a young age (I was 31) as they usually asked first off if it was natural

As PP have said, the upkeep is ridiculous. I'd be in the chair for 4-5h every 8 weeks absolute minimum (should really be 6 weeks) to get my roots done

As well as purple shampoo I would top it up with a proper silver toner every other week, which was a full on undertaking with gloves, brush and shower cap

I also had to do hair masks because it completely knackers your hair. After 2.5 years of full on bleach the breakages got severe enough that I had my hair cut short - and not long after that I got it dyed back brown. It was brilliant fun but the maintenance is ridiculous and it does take a huge toll on your hair

Your hair is incredible so personally I'd let well alone!

Yes another vote for leave well alone. Honestly you look fab as you are.

Want2beme · 30/07/2017 00:00

I'm allowing the grey in! My hairdresser is just adding some grayish highlights throughout my fairly short hair and I love it. I don't have a lot of grey yet, but I decided that I don't want to have any colour added and just want to let the grey eventually, take over. If you don't have any grey, don't add it now. Your time will come and your hair's a lovely colour.

Love your doggy - my absolute favourite.

This is mine. It takes a lot of getting used to (although the lazy arse in me loves no faffy dye any more). Cherish your grey-free brown barnet OP!

Suki Still not clear if your hair colour as in the photos is natural or highlighted?

If it's natural, you are def not 'mouse'. If it's highlighted, it suits you as it is.

Either leave well alone, warm it up slightly, or carry on having the same tints you have now.

You sound a bit sad about life perhaps? :(
You okay?

SukiTheDog · 30/07/2017 09:59

😊. Morning all...

My hair now is flat brown mouse (though hairdresser says its "base" is very ash) with warm highlights and some God awful "bronde" shampoo of my husband's I used which left a "warmish" cast overall (won't mention the brand...). Hairdresser refused to touch it till some of the bronde faded and she's advising I work more with my ash shade, but warmed up 😐. I've an appointment in 2 weeks. It's had nothing done since March. So, a "mix". But no grey naturalky, as yet.

The dog... She's two years old and is just beautiful. Wherever we go with her, she gets fussed to within an inch of her life and is as my first dog (though we had one when I was around 4 or 5 years old) truly one of the very best things in my life.

Sadness.... Polly, am sad because my son is ill. He won't get better and can't talk about it much, at the moment. Too emotional. It's dawned on us as a family and me, in particular that despite much medical intervention over his life so far, his health will prevent him having what we'd term a normal life expectancy. I will look after him, for as long as I'm able (but am 55 now!) and after that, when I'm not here (he's an only child) he will need a lot of care. And in the words of Forrest Gump (his favourite film) "That's all I can say about that". Annnd, here we go now....tears.

Am back. Recovering nicely with a cuppa and bacon sarni and the dog sat, as close as she can get, to the bacon 😄. It's odd really. In my life, I ought not to be wringing my hands about my hairdo but, it's easy I guess, to focus on something ridiculous and irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, when there's other, bigger stuff to fall apart over. The other day, I was going out into town in a pair of shorts and T shirt. My beloved son said "please don't leave the house looking like that" referring to my physique and 55 yr old cellulite. Time was, I'd have dressed with more care. Now, I have an "it doesn't matter. None of it really matters" attitude which I should really apply to my hair, I guess 😊

Oh, and I thoroughly recommend a dog as therapy!

BananaFish thanks for your honest account, there. Im NOT ready to need my hair all chopped off, as yet, due to over processing. But, that was what I had in mind, that stripped and coloured grey thing so, thanks for the heads up.

Margot, that is absolutely gorgeous hair colouring. Envy

I'm no hair expert, so no advice. But Just posted to say that you are a good looking woman, lovely bone structure in your face.

SukiTheDog · 30/07/2017 10:36

OhYes, thanks love. Makes me smile whenever I get a comment about bone structure. At school, a teacher dismissed me as "she's technically good (was a ballet boarding school) but has no features; she has a plain face" Wink.

You'll be grey long enough. Don't start prematurely.
