Hair breaking, splitting and frizzing

Hi can anyone offer some advice, please?
I'll try to explain.

I'm in my early 40's and colour my hair (roots) every two months - due to premature greying at almost 20.

I use a permanent ash light brown (Garnier) no peroxide or amonia.

A few weeks ago I noticed my hair needed a trim as I had some dry and split ends.

I then started to notice when getting up in the mornings that the side I sleep on (left) a small patch of hair (near my ear) was getting really frizzy, and had broken off in places!

It's in the under section of hair and not obvious yet - despite being 2 inches shorter than the rest (just passed shoulders, all one length Bob).

I'm mortified and keep putting off going to the hairdressers! I just don't understand why it's happened.

Any advice would be great, thanks. X
