I want wild colour in my hair

My hair is dark brown with grey. I really fancy getting some sort of colour for the summer. Not my usual brown or auburn when I'm feeling adventurous, but like dip dying the ends a colour or something. Or going pink.
What should I do? What should I use? Inspire me please!

If you want to go pink or very bright you will need to bleach it, which can be a nightmare, so consider going to a salon. Having said that I dye my dark hair fun colours at home but I've been at it since 16 so most of my colouring disasters happened then!

Before I colour I use a clarifying or anti dandruff shampoo to get the stripping process going. If I'm going purple or blue (or any strong colour) I use Scott Cornwall Decolour in the blue box. It's a bit of a faff to mix but it takes any fake and natural colour away and leaves me a light yellow. I then use Pravana Vivivds as the colour. It's very long lasting and comes in a tube so it isn't as messy as Manic Panic etc. It's straightforward enough to do the colour - just follow the instructions. I use a tonne of conditioner afterwards to help - but your hair does go a bit dry.

If you want to go for a pastel or pink you need to bleach it very pale - white in essence. The Stargazer Vol 40/ 30 kits are good.

I would still go salon over home at first though. Once the base is bleached professionally, it's a lot easier to colour and change. Coconut oil makes a great hair mask to help repair the damage it's the only reason,!after 20 years of colouring, I still have hair. Just have fun with the colour, it'll look great!

This is me - freshly re-coloured yesterday. Despite going grey I had to firstly have high lift toner on until my hair went platinum then have affinage azure blue applied. I have it redone four weekly.

I have had purple and pink before, they fade fast even on bleach - blues hold much better

Can I jump in? I want to do the same but don't want to bleach my hair - would it be worth it at all to put a bright colour over medium brown hair?

You might get a bit of a coloured sheen on your hair but they tend to wash out really quickly on unbleached hair. I've got dark blonde hair and tried using a Manic Panic red once without bleaching. It actually came out a nice colour but literally every trace of it was gone after the first shower Sad

You'd probably get better results on darker hair with hair chalks, though again they're pretty temporary.

I wanted this, had it done (bleached first) and it lasted 4 washes. I was gutted, I loved it. If you find out what to use I'd love to know.

(Thanks - that's actually helpful for me as I'm on maternity and really it should be a normal colour when I return so the fading may be good!)

I sat behind someone at a show last week who had a smallish section of her hair done in a rainbow effect with strips of all the colours. It looked great.

It was like a My Little Pony, I kept wanting to reach out and brush it!

Has anyone used the Bleach London colours (seen in Boots)? They look like they'd do wild colours temporarily- it says 2-10 washes, which sounds ideal for a bit of hair fun on holiday, but no long term commitment.

Be warned, I used a L'Oréal colorista turquoise dye on the underside of my hair, meant to last 2 weeks, I've still not got it all out after two months. It looked fab for the two weeks then faded and won't quite leave me 😀. Fortunately it was just the underside so with my hair down you can hardly see it.

The Bleach Instagram page has some ideas :) sure they used to do more neon tho (less soft pastels)

If you use the bright unnatural colours keep a tub of colour spare to mix with your normal hair conditioner. It will keep your colour a lot longer and give it a bit of a kick over the next few weeks.
