I am really, REALLY bad at fashion stuff but I really want to look nice for this wedding and I never feel like I do Sad

I have found the perfect skirt (please no "urgh that's vile" comments because I really like it and I can never normally find anything I like!)

Anyway, so I have the skirt. I really need to find a top. I have tried looking for myself, I am just really crap at knowing what goes with what. I normally choose dresses so I don't have to think about it, but I just really liked this skirt. Now I'm in a right pickle.

  • The top in the photo really WON'T suit me.
  • I absolutely CANNOT wear yellow, but happy to consider anything else.

I will be 18 weeks pregnant at the ceremony (end of August) so although not showing, I definitely won't be able to pull off one of those crop top thingies that seem to be everywhere - or anything else that might flash my tummy flab! I'm a size 10, closer to 12 top to accommodate tits.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Any particular reason you didn't post in 'Style and Beauty'?

Do you deliberately not want views of those who hang out there?

Scottishchick39 · 05/07/2017 11:06

I don't think that skirt will suit a baby bump, I'd wait until nearer the time to see how big you'll be by then.

Scottishchick39 · 05/07/2017 11:07

Just noticed that you've already bought the skirt. Is it your first baby?

LogicalPsycho · 05/07/2017 11:16

Unless you are very toned OP, I'd be surprised if you weren't showing at 18wks, even if it just looked more like you've eaten a really big meal I'm sure you'll have some bumpage up front Grin

I'll have a look ans post back, but I'd go for a fitted top with that shape of skirt, too much loose fitting material and you run the risk of looking twice the size you are!

SkirtySkirt · 05/07/2017 11:17

AuntieStella I didn't know there was a style and beauty area Blush

Scottishchick39 It's my 2nd baby. I didn't have a bump till about 25 weeks with 1st. At most I'll be at that in between stage where I look like I've been a bit greedy lately.

The skirt is gorgeous. I would go for a lace body in one of the colours of the skirt.

That said, I agree with Scottishchick - you may not fit in to it at 18 weeks. I was extremely neat with my pregnancies at that stage but I was still using an elastic band to extend my jeans etc.

Ginlovinglady · 05/07/2017 11:22

Why not just a plain white blouse in a different shape or t-shirt style top
I think white works well with that colour
And then maybe a deep purple pashmina if it gets cold

MaxPepsi · 05/07/2017 11:23

Do you like your arms?
I'd go for a tailored plain vest/tunic top in either orange or pink.
However I love wearing bright colours.
Where is the skirt from? Have you looked at the rest of their range as normally there are co-ordinating pieces

PrimalLass · 05/07/2017 11:25

I got big quicker with my second. Lovely skirt though.

ChildishGambino · 05/07/2017 11:30

I'd go for a black silky cami and a colourful pashmina personally

SkirtySkirt · 05/07/2017 11:32

Yeah I don't mind my arms. I just can't decide.

Even if I get bigger quicker this time, I really don't think I'm going to have an actual bump at 18 weeks. The skirt is pretty roomy at the moment (deliberately) so there's room for some expansion.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I didn't have a proper bump till 24/25 weeks with DC1 and went to a wedding at 19 weeks where I just wore a dress a size bigger than normal. In a week I'll be at a wedding at 17 weeks with DC2 and I already think I won't fit into the same dress I wore last time. Just to warn you!

AliceMumsnet · 05/07/2017 16:00

Hi folks

We're going to be moving this one over to Style & Beauty at the OP's request very shortly.

Splandy · 05/07/2017 16:02

Another warning! I didn't show at all until about 6 months with my first. By 20 weeks with my second I was being asked when I was due!

JaneEyre70 · 05/07/2017 16:10

I'd go for a very plain top with the skirt, perhaps in a silvery green or a navy (either a good quality t shirt or sleeveless silky vest if hot) and then perhaps a purple chunky necklace to draw the eyes up from your bump? It's a lovely skirt though and lots of colours so no need to exact colour match.

Aquamarine1029 · 05/07/2017 16:10

From my experience and from others, you get much bigger much sooner with a second pregnancy

SkirtySkirt · 05/07/2017 17:26

Ooooooh thank you so much for the links!

Hoping I can still fit into the skirt but will make sure I have a Plan B just in case.

Oh and thanks for the reassurance foggy - fingers crossed!

Emboo19 · 05/07/2017 17:29

I would go for something simple like a plain t shirt or vest but in a nice fabric not just regular t shirt material.
Any colour in the skirt will go well
