How would you describe your style?

Just interested really. If you could narrow it down to two or three words how would you describe it? Also how old are you and who are your style inspirations ? This comes off the back of a discussion I had with friends.

I've started to realise that in my head I'm still 25 but when it comes to trying clothes in dressing rooms I totally look my age and probably need to start dressing it too. However I'm struggling to marry that with what I want to look like!

So me...

Age, 40

Attempted Style : Classic with a twist

Style inspirations: Olivia Palmero, Alexa Chung (when she's less quirky). I have a sort of love hate thing with AC.

These women are a lot younger than me clearly. Is it insane to have them as fashion inspirations?

Preppy country casual in the winter - Jeans boots jumper

In summer more beach casual - shorts (denim or chino) tees vests shirts and flip flops.

For work I'm a pencil skirt heels and a blouse girl.

ememem84 · 01/07/2017 19:36

Oh. I'm 32.

talkingtofrank · 01/07/2017 19:39

I'll probably get flamed for this but I love Kim Kardashians style! She manages to make casual looks so effortless and chic and I love how she uses such neutral colours and palettes. She can make anything basic look amazing.

Therealslimshady1 · 01/07/2017 19:45

Ah, this is funny as I would describe myself as "mainstream" and "mumsy" as I dress for life, which means living in the country, walking my dog, taking kids to school etc.

However, my friends kindly describe me as "elegant" or even "trendy"(must be my biker jacket Wink, to me that is mainstream)

...saying that, where I live anything that isn't a fleece and baggy jeans is "elegant" or "trendy"

I am very particular about clothes that fit, loath baggy or too tight (unless it's harem pants or skinnies, which are meant to be baggy/tight).

I am 45, and think you should aspire and wear whatever you like and feel good in.

Don't buy into the whole mutton-lamb thing

Fashion is fun, don't start doubting yourself!

Blondielongie · 01/07/2017 19:47

I look Folk hipster.

But I try to be like Audrey Hepburn and choose clothese she would have worn, but somehow revert back to the above. So I'm getting it very wrong indeed.

EarlessToothlessVagabond · 01/07/2017 19:48

I've developed a somewhat tragic rock-chick-esque look at 41. So black skinny jeans, t-shirts or plain silk shirts partly tucked in and blazers with leopard print flats or boots. Pierced nose and messy angled long bob. I like Kate Moss' look for inspiration. However I do feel good and comfortable with this look. I've never been girly and have yet to find a dress that looks good on me with my difficult apple-when-pudgy and inverted-triangle-when-slim shape!

phoolani · 01/07/2017 19:50

Masculine classic with a twist? More Katherine Hepburn than Audrey. With some odd, sculptural shapes thrown in.

SomeOtherFuckers · 01/07/2017 19:50

I'm 22
I'm generally dressed in 'hangover-chic' ... so activewear or plain tshirts and jeans but when I make an effort I try and go for 'preppy-classy' ... inspirations I don't really know ... I wish we still wore corsets and hoop skirts lol x

Therealslimshady1 · 01/07/2017 19:51

Haha, just did the buzzfeed "who is your style icon" and got Iris Apfel...coooool!

Working towards that Wink

SallyGinnamon · 01/07/2017 19:53

Lazy! And I'm 50.

Screamer1 · 01/07/2017 19:55

Ooh love Katherine Hepburn style.

Thing is thereal I would absolutely LOVE LOVE to be like iris apfell when I'm that age, but I feel like I'm slowly disappearing into obscurity.

I think it might be too late to have a radical fashion overhaul.

I'm 22.

I don't know if I have a style. Casual, comfortable, geeky are the three adjectives I'd use. Skinny jeans, geeky/slogan t-shirts, comfy sweaters from the men's section, Converse.

Screamer1 · 01/07/2017 20:09

Thing is ovaries, at 22 you probably look brilliant whatever.

I'm finding I'm needing to put more and more effort in as the years slide by, it's either that or totally give up. Which is also an option tbf.

Wasin Debenhams and realised that two styles describedme, although I actually rarely shop there.

The two styles are Mantaray, when I'm in y wannabe hippy phase, an Maine, when i,m in my Boden-esque phase.

Seriously though screamer, I know what you mean about needing to put more effort in as the years whizz by.

I need to wear colours and styles that flatter. It also make an enormous difference if I'm slim and have eaten well in the last few months. Shows in the face.

At 61, and no less invested in S&B, I aim to be comfortable, fit, healthy and just a bit too fashion forward to be relegated to Gransnet and the elastic waistband and fleece squad.
