How would you describe your style?

Just interested really. If you could narrow it down to two or three words how would you describe it? Also how old are you and who are your style inspirations ? This comes off the back of a discussion I had with friends.

I've started to realise that in my head I'm still 25 but when it comes to trying clothes in dressing rooms I totally look my age and probably need to start dressing it too. However I'm struggling to marry that with what I want to look like!

So me...

Age, 40

Attempted Style : Classic with a twist

Style inspirations: Olivia Palmero, Alexa Chung (when she's less quirky). I have a sort of love hate thing with AC.

These women are a lot younger than me clearly. Is it insane to have them as fashion inspirations?

I think flamboyant works better and better with age. Think I'm a bit too much of a shrinking violet though

Can I also say that my 'style' doesn't at all reflect my personality or political leanings. I am a lefty lentil weaving alternative, Jungian psychology loving highly educated but lower middle class mum. One of my most favourite shops is JCrew. I love natural fibres which they do well. I also shop at Hobbs and occasionally find amazing dresses at Zara and even Oliver Bonas though they are a bit £££. I would probably not look out of place at a fancy country golf club on some days but would shock members as I am a passionate Corbynite.

Just read the pictures and decide what I like and could wear without frightening horses. But I trawl all the 40 something style threads, and just pick bits, and colours that feel right.

Screamer1 · 01/07/2017 20:49

Interesting sillily. You're right that we do often make those kind of assumptions based on the clothes.

Helen Mirren gets it right IMVHO.

Floisme · 01/07/2017 20:50

I'll go for fierce.

Age: 60.

Inspirations: Vivienne Westwood, Katharine Hepburn, Miss Marple, Patti Smith.

Sounds amazing floisme

Oh and I'm 38.

Likeaninjanow · 01/07/2017 20:58

My friends say I'm 'edgy'. I was complimented at a beauty counter yesterday on my outfit. The woman said 'I love your outfit! Not many people could carry that off, but you look amazing'. Ha! Not sure that's really a compliment. I'm 43.

Rhodiolia · 01/07/2017 20:58

Some days, it's skinny jeans, nice jumper and converse. Others, it's tea dresses and wedges. For occasions, I love the rockabilly look. I'm 36.

3wayburger · 01/07/2017 21:05

43
Bag lady chic

livefrommysofa · 01/07/2017 23:58

I'd love to be able to use only 3 words to describe my style but it changes so much as I try to find my style. I would say I aspire to be boho with a hint of rock chic and beachy during summer. I love fern cotton's style and I think Blake lively gets it right.

I'm 35

RebelandaStunner · 02/07/2017 00:13

A dash of rock chick
a speck of punk
a hint of grunge
with a smidgen of classic for good measure

MotherMucca · 02/07/2017 00:18

Ageing Art Teacher is my vibe.

bananafish81 · 02/07/2017 00:37

Age 35

Urban fox?

Dunno how to describe my style - capsule wardrobe is slightly tomboy chic

Mostly head to toe uniqlo - stretchy skinnies, shirts & stan Smiths

With a leather jacket, wayfarers and red lippy (LadyDanger4Life) thrown on top

Great idea for a thread.

I'm 43, tall, size 10/12 (inched up to a 12 last year, and slowly working my way back to a 10; it will take the rest of this year!).

My style is probably quite conservative. Feminine.

I enjoy going to work, as this is my chance to dress nicely, make-up, hair, etc. I instantly feel better/transformed in heels, and feel slightly out of my zone at the weekend, as heels aren't appropriate!

Although my style is feminine, I tend much more towards trousers, than skirts and dresses. I don't like my legs, and feel much more comfortable/stylish in a pair of cigarette trews.

I don't really have a style icon, I don't think. I'd love to be able to channel Jennifer Anniston's causal style for weekends - she does casual really well.

Agree with *Sillily's comment upthread. People tend to think I'm much more conservative/reserved than I am, I think, due to the way I appear. I'm a tree-hugging, feminist, lefty, ex-90s clubber, love a raucous night out and a few wines, but you wouldn't think it from the way I dress.

In terms of getting older, I'm definitely lacking. I think those with an edgier, individual style are getting it right, and probably having more fun with their clothes.

CRumpled

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 02/07/2017 07:11

i guess....quirky if you wanted to be nice. weird if you were being accurate but not as kind about it. lots of patterns, comic book, music and generally geeky tees, shorts and tights, 50s style skirts and dresses in a variety of colours and patterns. I'm absolutely fine with the way i dress, i like it, it suits me so i will carry on the way i am.

Snorfig · 02/07/2017 07:21

I love minimalist angular shapes but I'm 4'10 so limited in my style icons. During the week I probably ape generic 'high profile lady lawyer in the news', but on a budget and off eBay. I love shift dresses, mandarin collars and stiletto slingbacks.
In winter (off duty) I've got a very clear style of dress/skirt+thick tights+ ankle boots plus fitted knitwear. In summer I just desperately try to survive without showing too much eczema and pale skin 😂
I'm 35. I think this is probably my default look for life, after some VERY extreme experimentation as a youngster.

MrsBartlettforthewin · 02/07/2017 07:46

Lost! Used to be alternative/punk but over the last 5 years or so have completely lost my style identity. (Kids and the requirement to dress fairly conservatively for work have contributed to this)

Slowly getting it back - had my long dull hair chopped off into an awesome pixie cut at the beginning of the year and have felt much more me since then. The clothes are still a working progress as can never find anything I like. Really want to find a punk chic look but not sure it exists. Oh and I'm 32.

hollieberrie · 02/07/2017 08:04

Another vote for tomboy chic.

My style icons are my ex girlfriend - we split years ago but I always try to think what would X wear as she usually looked effortlessly cool and minimal...
Also Kristen Stewart, Emma Willis (off duty not her presenting dresses!), Kate Moennig,
Sometimes it veers a bit into minimal boho chic with jewellery, bed hair etc

PhyllisWig · 02/07/2017 08:13

Frumpy no style and it bugs me. Late teens/early 20s I was a 90s indie kid - all dms and short skirts and band tshirts.

I have been overweight throughout my adult life which meant sadly that though i loved clothes I basically looked for comfy stuff to cover me up and style wasn't a consideration.

I hit 40 and lost 4 stone and find myself a size 12 for the first time. I still cannot seem to be able to marry comfort and style plus all the demands of life and waste lots of money on not getting it quite right.

I like quite classic type looks for work but struggle as I can't wear heels due to a knee problem. Dresses suit me better than trousers (am a short hourglass) but I can't get the flat shoe thing to work properly.

Out of work I am a mess. I do want to go back to that age appropriate indie kid vibe - maybe cords, the odd pair of jeans and a couple of dresses with some clumpy boots and knitwear. I fear I will stick to baggy jersey bottoms and scraggy t shirts.

It genuinely makes me upset actually that I try and never get it to work.

ShesAStar · 02/07/2017 08:34

I'm a potter and I believe I look very much like a potter! Cross over aprons, Toast dungarees dresses and chunky knits. I go for dresses in the summer.

FledglingFTB · 02/07/2017 08:41

Style: ASOS sale bin 😩

I've started buying multiples of things that do fit, but I'm such a magpie. I always buy something gawdy that I'll never actually wear

I don't have a style icon as such, but I love the idea of capsule wardrobe dressing. Never have got anywhere near achieving it.
