How would you describe your style?

Just interested really. If you could narrow it down to two or three words how would you describe it? Also how old are you and who are your style inspirations ? This comes off the back of a discussion I had with friends.

I've started to realise that in my head I'm still 25 but when it comes to trying clothes in dressing rooms I totally look my age and probably need to start dressing it too. However I'm struggling to marry that with what I want to look like!

So me...

Age, 40

Attempted Style : Classic with a twist

Style inspirations: Olivia Palmero, Alexa Chung (when she's less quirky). I have a sort of love hate thing with AC.

These women are a lot younger than me clearly. Is it insane to have them as fashion inspirations?

PhyllisWig Well done for shifting your weight. May I please ask how you achieved this? Thanks

Mary-Kate Olsen is my style aspiration but I can't quite get it right. I'd love to be "grown up grunge" but I'm more band tshirts and converse and sometimes think I dress like a teenager Confused I'm 30. Dcs have stolen my style identity for the last couple of years, would love to get it back.

Philomena Cunk meets Vivienne Westwood.

Plain and neutral. Unadorned (don't do jewellery, scarves etc) . Mainly though I am in the camp of always looking not quite right. Never have the appropriate jacket / coat , never look properly put together.

Sillily I think we should be friends

This is really hard! I'm 29, 5"2, size 12 and despite being a loony leftie, almost vegan etc etc, I've spent my whole life wanting to dress like a middle class mum picking her child up from private school.

I've sort of gone that way but with a bit of an art teacher twist. So winter: skinny jeans, long sleeve Bretons, blazers, boots (not leather) but also big scarves and big layered jumpers. Summer: tunicy dresses, leggings, TOMS, oversized shirts and skinnies. Also chunky Oliver Bonas necklaces make an appearance - I am in need of more! Work includes some Whistles dresses if I need to be smarter, but we're a fairly informal office.

I have a colour palette of neutrals with some tonal blues and blushes, and mustard yellow in winter, so probably look quite pulled together because of that, even though it's a fairly relaxed style. I know what's 'me' more intuitively these days.

Sorry, it was impossible to make that short!

My style is best described as 'non-existent'. Like other posters, I had a very definite style in my twenties. I wore a mix of boho/hippy/grunge stuff - lots of tie dye, band t-shirts, DM boots, floral tea dresses etc. I would LOVE to wear a 'grown up' version of that now, but I am struggling to find things I like that fit the brief.

I have found things on Pinterest and Polyvore that I like, but not sure what style it would be to try to find similar in the shops.

For example, this skirt would work with a plain top and flat sandals, wouldn't it?

And this top would work with jeans or a plain skirt.

It's just knowing where to look for this kind of clothes really...

MsT, started on MyFitnessPal and a Fitbit which shifted much of it. I am now half way through the 8 week blood sugar diet, partially to shift the last 10lb, but mostly to change my attitude to sugar/carbs as I have a strong family history of type 2 diabetes even in people who are not overweight.

Kitty, that sounds v similar to me!

nina2b · 02/07/2017 12:02

Another Alexa Chung fan here! I don't care whether she has a stylish or not because her look is just perfect.

Scout hut jumble sale. If you're being kind.

PNGirl · 03/07/2017 11:26

I feel most comfortable in my AllSaints leather jacket or Diesel parka, skinny jeans, a looser fit top and some boots. I bought some black DMs last winter and it was like a lightbulb went off.

I wear a lot of ¾ sleeve tops, black/grey/white, stripes. I love a good trainer and a statement necklace. So I suppose you’d call it a bit of Scandi blogger/90s grunge via GAP...

Doobigetta · 03/07/2017 16:21

41, size 10/12. Aiming for classic/preppy. I don't pay all that much attention to celebrities, but I like the way Elle McPherson dresses.

MaQueen · 03/07/2017 17:10

Hmmm...

Understated...any colour, so long as it's black...jeans...Skandi-style

Despite being 46, I have just treated myself to a beautiful biker jacket and some leopard ballet flats.

I have never suited girlie, fussy styles - I'm quite tall and have messy, cropped hair, and lean far more toward All Saints than Boden.

WhooooAmI24601 · 03/07/2017 18:21

I would describe it as nautical magpie preppy. Today's outfit is a Fat Face denim dungaree dress, white J Crew t-shirt and Primark Beauty and the Beast pumps.

For work I live in chinos, cropped trousers and sleeveless blouses in neutrals. Never anything black because it makes me look like a cadaver. Lots of navy, tan accessories lots of cream blouses and some Mint Velvet grey knits. DH says I look like one of the 'older' women who advertise Tommy Hilfiger clothes because I only wear certain colours. In summer I chuck in coral or bright pink to mix up the navy.

I do love a sparkly shoe and never pass up the opportunity to bring them out.

I'm also partial to a bit of leopard print but accept that being 36 and blonde I'm risking looking a bit like Liz Macdonald from Corrie if I wear it more than once every few months.
