Reverse balayage - at home?

My hair is currently very light blonde. I've had my hair balayged at the hairdressers before but (and I don't get this) it's either fairly light at the root or medium brown, she can't do an inbetween.

Prior to this I've coloured my hair by myself for years and I want to give this a go myself
I've got a dark blonde dye and want to darken down my roots and leave the lengths lighter

Any tips? I've previously picked out bits to leave 'highlighted' by separating them and coating in conditioner before colouring the rest which was pretty easy and gave good results.

You can't go wrong with looking at a tutorial by ellebangs on YouTube.

She's a hairdresser in San Francisco and offers loads of tutorials. Easy to follow too.
