Putting leather clothes in the washing machine

Hi,
Has anyone washed a leather item of clothing in the washing machine, instead of taking it to the dry cleaner, and it has come out fine?

I haven't tried it, but my guess would be that it would wrinkle up and not be recoverable.

My much taller and a little bigger sister washed a 100% wool and leather ted baker Cardigan. Its now mine as shrunk too small for her so i benefited from washing real leather but unless your the smaller sister wanting to nab a too big item, i wouldn't recommend it!

I put a leather bag in and it came out dry/brittle but with cream eventually suppled up again

Don't think I'd chance anything else though

Don't do it. Washed a lovely pair of leather gloves - would probably fit one of DCs barbie dolls nowGrin

I put in a very grubbycream jacket. Tied up in a pillow case in a short cold wash, came out great

I washed a leather jacket. It smelled very musty and inexpensive so if it ended up being destroyed I would not have minded it.

It turned out great.

Washed a pair of gloves. Result was gloves-no-more.

For those who had things turn out great, did you use any washing powder? I have a bag I love but the lining is disgusting. Dried having it professionally cleaned and have sponged it but doesn't help much. Thinking i might bung it in the wash and see

My husband washed a leather coat in our machine. I told him not to be a fool. It looks fine. I'm pretty sure he used ordinary washing powder.

I used ordinary washing liquid.

Maybe try it if you have nothing to lose - if the bag is really filthy and you really don't want to use it anymore because of the dirt.

I've washed a suede shirt and a draw strong leather bag that had exploded yogurt in it. Both looked amazing. Dried them slowly and kept working the fabric.

Tried to dye a leather jacket in the machine when it came out the thread was still light coloured and as I held it up to check it over it peeled away from the seams. The material felt all jellyish.
So two out of three.
