Tell her to piss off and where what you want. She can't dictate what you wear. Maybe bright colours don't suit you. or tell her someone has died and you're wearing mourning

wobblywonderwoman · 27/06/2017 23:04

I would wear a darker flattering dress with colourful necklace and shoes op

woopwhop · 27/06/2017 23:05

Yes I would ignore dress code! I only ever wear black. Would maybe consider bright accessories.

Groupie123 · 27/06/2017 23:09

What's your shape? Can you do pastels? I could when I was a size 20 but I had a defined waist

Rach5l · 27/06/2017 23:10

I know it would upset her if I turned up in black though.
Maybe navy or maroon?
Is this dressy enough/elegant enough? Im a country bumpkin I need some swish advice people!Grin

Could be with the right accessories

woopwhop · 27/06/2017 23:13

That dress is lovely

Wear whatever you are comfortable in!

woopwhop · 27/06/2017 23:13

Your phone being on 1% battery though is making me twitch

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 27/06/2017 23:15

I would wear something you are comfortable in - in a dark colour if you want - but dress it up with bright accessories.

Do you have the budget for a personal shopper appointment? A friend of mine with a similar issue (wanted something for her fuller figure for a wedding) and saw someone at House Of Fraser. She ended up buying a beautiful dress that she would never have chosen to try on beforehand.

BadToTheBone · 27/06/2017 23:20

The dress you've posted cured is lovely.

Op won't be back till she's charged her phone! Lol

wobblywonderwoman · 27/06/2017 23:22

I think that is bright and colourful (I only ever wear black or navy)
Great dress

EvaTheOptimist · 27/06/2017 23:24

If you are self-conscious about upper arms this is the answer

MrsLettuce · 27/06/2017 23:27

You must wear something you're comfortable with, end of.

this is good but maybe a bit pricey.

Could you hack something like this, print wise?

blue2014 · 27/06/2017 23:28

Why only dark colours? I'm that size and brights look much better on me.

Try lindybop?

MrsLettuce · 27/06/2017 23:29

Huuuge xpost. Wandered off and forgot to refresh.

What's your budget OP?

Rach5l · 27/06/2017 23:32

Haha very observant Grin
No I've never worn pastels - my figure is a bit like the picture - especially with spanx I can make a waist!

I feel like I should try monsoon or somewhere like it but I don't want bright flowery or fuddy duddy, or lacey I look like a stuffed sausage in lace

The reception is in an art gallery 🤔

Oo I love that striped maxi! I really dont want to wear any black though as shes requested colour.
I want to spend about £100 I think though I don't have any heels so will need to buy those too
Thanks for your suggestions!

Charlieandlola · 27/06/2017 23:38

Try Scarlett and Jo or Lindybop

MrsLettuce · 27/06/2017 23:39

How about this? No black. I think it could look amazing. It says the model is 6'0" so it should be a better length on you than it is on her.

TheNemesisOfLame · 27/06/2017 23:41

How about this one from Collectif?

I like a 50's look when it's done well but it's getting a bit tired. An art gallery wedding reception in London is maybe not the best place for it, unless it 'your' look, IYSWIM.

But, far more importantly. You really, really, shouldn't be wearing spanx and actual high heels unless you actually like wearing them. Honestly. Being all trussed up like that when you don't like to be is a recipe for a nasty day. Also, being dreadfully uncomfortable is rarely chic look Wink

I was mother to bridesmaids at a wedding just recently and it was all go. All. Day. Long. Loads of bending down to help them with this or that, which is hell in spanx, IME. Mostly standing in between. I had beautiful shoes but they were thankfully also comfy so no pained hobbling.

Rach5l · 28/06/2017 13:20

No 50s style look awful on me, i don't have 'tidy' boobs iykwim

slug · 28/06/2017 13:49

Try 1940s. I'm a size 18 apple with no waist. I have a dress in this style which I wear to work and to weddings. It always gets lots of good comments.

Rach5l · 28/06/2017 14:26

Oh lovely very Joan Holloway !
I wonder if I'd fit in the 16-18 though
