Please help me not look passable at wedding

Big wedding coming up, really want to look like I've made an effort for bride and groom of whom I am very fond, but am struggling.

Feel like a bit of a disaster at the moment - size 20-22, 5'8, very apple shape. Legs ok but arms and tummy not. Don't look great in dresses as they tend to make me look pregnant. Favour skinny jeans/jeggings and black tops most of the time.

Dress code is formal/black tie.

...but honestly feel like i have no idea.

Anyone got any advice/suggestions? Hugely appreciated.

It's in a couple of weeks, so significant weight loss in the meantime unlikely although that would be nice.

Thanks in advance O wise Mumsnetters X

All of those are nice but my favourite is the first one. You can get a nice cream/ silvery wrap to go with it. You will look lovely in that. My suggestions are to get your done professionally in a style you like, put some nice make up on and get your nails done. Buy a matching fancy bag and you will look great. There's no reason why just because you're bigger you won't look glamorous and beautiful. Then enjoy the day! Smiling always makes everyone look better.

Are you sure you want to go with a maxi? A midi length dress with a full skirt might be more flattering and if you have good legs why hide them? Asos have a big selection of plus size brands why not have a look?

This one looks like it would give you a nice silhouette

Fancy jumpsuit if your legs are good?

MiniAlphaBravo · 24/06/2017 17:24

I agree don't go maxi if legs are your best bit! I think show off best bit and cover bits you're not fond of. Darker colours more flattering so maybe navy midi dress with some sleeves or a have a jacket with you so you have options if it gets warm. Love this one:

Then hair done in a lovely up do and nice nails and make up and you'll be fine.

Number 3 on your list looks more formal and appropriate for a black tie wedding, the others seem a bit too casual looking.

Excellent advice, thank you so much everyone for the links and the encouragement.

You are right re: midi vs maxi. Love the suggestions, just trying to decide which one!

Thanks again. I'm looking forward to getting dressed up now.

Have you had a look at Lindy Bop? They are have some really gorgeous dresses that are really flattering for a fuller figure. I was a size 20 and with most dresses I would need some spanx (or similar) but with Lindy Bop I could easily get away without them. A lot of them are sleeveless but they do cute little caridgans to go with the dresses and the underskirst.
