Seche Vite Top Coat (Nails)

Has anyone tried this? Saw a scary post re chemicals in it but apparently that was OTT.

The effect it has on my nails is AMAZING! I do a barry M polish, two coats, then the top coat. Bone dry in 25 mins (unless you scratch deeply). Fixes smears or streaky bits when you apply too. None of my friends have heard of it, I'm curious if anyone on here has tried it or had anything similar/better?

I love it too - so shiny!

isupposeitsverynice · 24/06/2017 08:48

I haven't found anything else that comes close tbh. What was it you read about the chemicals in it?

knowler · 24/06/2017 09:04

Yes, I have it and love it. I'm also surprised how few ppl know about it.

Florence16 · 24/06/2017 19:05

They look very gel like after don't they? It's such amazing stuff.

Here is a link, it's the toulene:

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/lacquerglamour.wordpress.com/2011/09/21/seche-vite-and-toluene-harmless-or-harmful/amp/

I found an article which said that essentially if you worked in a salon daily and were inhaling it there would be an issue, but realistically the amount you'd inhale doing your nails once a week or so in a well ventilated area is potentially far too low to cause a problem. But there are lots of scaremongery articles out there and not as many which redress the balance which surprised me.

What polishes do you ladies use before the top coat? I like the brushes on Barry M and love their Gelly Shine. Not found another brand I like too much. Got a Max Factor one for £8 but the brush is horrid!

I find it shrinks over time, which is really annoying. THeres a Sally Hanson one that is as good but doesn't shrink.

KimchiLaLa · 24/06/2017 19:19

Yes it's brilliant and I haven't found anything close

ElfEars · 24/06/2017 19:25

Nothing else comes close.

For nail varnish my favourite is Essie.

Best top coat. But half way through bottle it thickens. You can buy thinning drops which revives it. Worth doing.

sowhatusernameisnttaken · 24/06/2017 22:40

I found it awful...I couldn't believe it after the rave reviews I saw on here

fabulousfrancesca · 24/06/2017 23:11

I love it, I've been using it for years. It's one of the very few things I've repeatedly purchased.

Cakescakescakes · 24/06/2017 23:14

Poshé (from Amazon) is almost identical but was recommended to me in pregnancy as it doesn't contain all the chemicals SV does.

Lotsofsausage · 25/06/2017 10:16

I love it, saw it recommended by a beauty blogger. Also Essie gel top coat is pretty good.

shamoffour · 25/06/2017 10:22

It didn't work for me at all. It looked great for about 24hrs and then just peeled off. I tried thin layers/thick layers/two coats but it still peeled I was gutted.

Florence16 · 25/06/2017 10:34

I heard it peels if you apply it to polish that is mostly dry, if you do it on polish that is still quite wet it isn't meant to peel?

Shrinking does make sense, mine seems to recede on the edge of my nail after a few days.

Off to google the alternatives mentioned, thanks!

I used to love it, but then read a disclaimer on the back of the bottle which said the product contains a chemical which could possibly cause birth defects.... It completely freaked me out and I've never used Seche Vite anymore since then!

hippadoppaloppagorillapig · 25/06/2017 16:22

I have the shrinking issue as well, although I love the drying time & how glossy it is! I tend to use Maybelline super stay 3d gel top coat, which is very very glossy, doesn't dry as quickly, but doesn't shrink either.
