Earring posts

Very odd question, but are earring posts usually a standard size? I have a beautiful pair of earring which were made for me as a gift but they are really uncomfortable. I have a notion that the posts might be too thick (or the holes in my ears are too small). I'd have to go back to the jeweller about it which is a pain so I wanted to check if it might be likely or possible first.

Post thicknesses do vary. If you don't vary the earrings you wear your holes can get smaller over time. My piercing earrings had really thick posts but i wouldn't be able to wear them now.

I've slowly opened mine by wearing gradually thicker posts. They naturally become smaller again if you stop wearing thick posts.

Ah, thanks, that makes sense. I go through periods of wearing earrings all the time or none for ages. I'll try to build them up a bit so, they are too beautiful to sit in a box.

You can get the posts changed if they're not costume jewellery. Take them to a jewellers workshop.
If silver usually up to £20. If gold could be up to £35-£40 depending on whether either of them have to be laser welded.

Put a tiny bit of moisturiser on them before you put them in. This may help.

fabulousathome's tip is a good one.
I use a spot of Savlon cream to "lubricate" earrings that are difficult to insert.

I have noticed the same thing - my original studs used to really hurt when they went in, and feel as if they might even be tearing the holes, but I wouldn't wear them now anyway because they're gold and I only like silver. All other earrings seem to be about the right size.
