Plus size dresses/long tops for holiday

Please help - I've exhausted all my usual places!

I'm going to Florida next month and just know it's going to be hot.

I'm a size 18-20 and today's heat has been a bit much for me, so I know I have to get clothes just right so I don't completely melt.

I was thinking loose fitting jersey cotton dresses or top floaty tops over shorts of some description, but everything I find is either 100% polyester (I don't mind viscose etc but polyester is a step too far), high neck (I really need either v-neck or scoop neck), long sleeved or not stretchy.

Please can someone point me in the right direction?

And just to make it even trickier, I can't wear pastels (make me look washed out) so need stronger/autumn colours if possible...

Monki do some great basics eg www.monki.com/gb/View_all_new/Basic_soft_dress/8668818-27048615.1#c-125422 and they are often cut very generously - they will state if "oversize" cut so the large will comfortably fit 18. I bought several of their cotton tee dresses last year and they've been brilliant in this heat. They update stock and styles regularly so keep eye out. Watch for fabric though - fair few of them poly which will be too hot but cotton/modal/viscose mix might be cooler.

This could look fab for evening... www.monki.com/gb/View_all_new/Long_caftan_dress/8668818-26448136.1#c-47958

When I was in florida a few years back, I was a 18-20 and made the best decision of wearing cropped gym trousers, just below the knee.. comfy & controlled my body temp, as I seem to be one of those "hot sweaty messes" in this heat. I also bought oversized tees from the boohoo plus size range, & Matalan!

Enjoy your hols! 😁

I have already suggested these today on another thread, Boden casual jersey dress, I have got loads, they are comfortable, wash well and they do lots of colours. Mr Boden, if you are reading I want commission!!

Have a flick through. They do longer ones too and a few more styals. All for £8:99 each. There so comfortable. I've been raving about them all day

I'm a size 20 and I wore a couple of Lady Voluptuous Lyra dresses on holiday to vegas and barbados, paired with the big tights company antichafing shorts. Pricey but could be dressed up and down for day and night.

Other than that i found some cheapy stuff on simply be and yours that was nice and wore really well.

Good luck!

Not sure what stockists to try but linen cotton viscose all good. Now I am bigger my legs rub together in the heat you can buy some underwear that looks like cycling shorts but keeps you cooler great in and a life saver in hot climates.

Thank you all - some great ideas!
Particularly like the gym leggings idea, that would sort out the thigh chaffing - good to shop right now Smile

Scarlett and Jo get a lot of praise .... try them!

I've just bought and worn today a nice maxi dress from Tu in sainsburys. Feels like a good quality jersey so flaps nicely and in a cooling way. also has a waist length frill/second layer on the top that's a bit floaty so looks like you have a suntop untucked in which sounds odd but is bizarrely flattering. It has shoestring straps but with bra strap style adjusters on so you can adjust it to be just right. It's black with large flowers on in pinks, blus and greens but quite muted so would be fine if you like autumnal tones.

They had some other nice stuff there too - some nice flappy trousers and other nice tops and dresses. Plenty of dross to sort through as well but definitely some good pieces worth digging out. And keep an eye on it as the seem to get new stuff in every 2 or 3 weeks and the nice stuff is spotted and goes quickly particularly when you see sonething and really want it!

ilovecherries · 17/06/2017 23:03

I've got a couple of the Phoebe dresses from boden, and a couple of bamboo and cotton ones from Seasalt. Both very comfy and I wear anti chafing underwear from Big Tights. I also wear loose white linen trousers with a drawstring waist a lot, with cotton tops from Sainsbury's.

typicallyme · 17/06/2017 23:12

That's why I went with the gym clothes!! Stops the chafing 😂 also, if you do get quite bad chafing, especially in heat, I highly recommend a product called Body Glide! You can buy online, - very small bottle but lasts ages (same consistency as chapstick) and can be reapplied throughout the day.

Itscurtainsforyou · 18/06/2017 14:20

@typicallyme - is it possible to get chaffing even if wearing shorts/leggings??

OP posts:
typicallyme · 18/06/2017 14:52

Depends how long your shorts are etc! With the cropped gym trousers, just make sure they fit properly.. not too tight and not too loose that you need to continually adjust yourself. I did 2 weeks in Orlando, wearing nothing but them around the theme parks (obviously a top too 😂) and I was chafe free, which made my holiday so much more enjoyable! Better being comfy than a fashion parade with burning legs 😂

Best website I can recommend is yoursclothing.com
They are a god send!
And while
Simplybe are also good it's expensive yours is not.

Eminybob · 18/06/2017 15:26

I've just been on holiday and took a few playsuits, there are some lovely ones that have the look of a dress but as they are shorts sort out the thigh rub issue, and are light and cool to wear.
I just got some cheap ones from matalan as it was a casual beach holiday, but have a look on Asos there are some nice ones.

PGOAT · 18/06/2017 15:30

I've done OK at Next recently. When you get to Florida, stop by an Old Navy store, they will have tons of this kind of thing and quite cheap.

I'm American and I always spent the summers at home in cotton sundresses. For the chafing I use Bodyglide. It REALLY works! I've tried the cropped leggings but I just get too hot. Trust me in the Florida summer you won't want ANY additional layers!
