Holiday night-out clothes

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone else is struggling with this. I'm looking for evening outfits for holiday to Greece in August. Will be a relaxed meals out, nice bars kind of holiday. Want to look polished but not too dressed up, eg heels not necessary. Have looked everywhere but everything is either tent-like or very ruffled.

I've lost about 20 lbs over the past year but am still on the chubby side- 5'3, size 14 with big boobs and a wobbly stomach. I tend to veer on the side of frump as it feels safe, which isn't great as I'm only 27! Need to tear myself away from default floral skater dresses as I feel like everything I own is a variation on the same theme.

Currently live in US but can order from UK. If anyone has found anything remotely promising for themselves or just have any ideas about a decent holiday wardrobe I'd be forever grateful!

It will be very hot in Greece in August , even in the evenings. i see you are in the US, are you used to hot summers?

Will you be in a busy resort or out clubbing ?

When I went on holiday I packed a couple of thin long skirts that could be worn with a vest top or tunic to look a bit more dressy.

Long skirts, loose trousers, long linen tops or tunics. Maxi dresses.

If you're in the US, what are Talbots like these days? When they had stores in the UK I used to get some of my holiday clothes from there as they had some gorgeous trousers and tops.

Phase Eight here do floaty tops and maxi dresses.

A lot will depend on your budget of course.

My go to evening outfits for holiday are maxi dresses with some kind of statement necklace or earrings or arm cuff. I've also got a couple of jumpsuits this year that I'm looking forward to wearing.

I'm used to hot summers- I live in NY so it will be a relief to get to Greece as the humidity is so high here in summer. It's a resort but on the traditional side- it's a mix of bars, clubs and nice restaurants. Lindos, in Rhodes- absolutely beautiful place, I go nearly every year.

Never tried Talbot's, will have to give it a go. Or Phase 8- do they do stuff for younger women?

Vodka how did you know I was "a woman of a certain age"? Smile Phase Eight do quite classic stuff but their maxi dresses are certainly suitable for younger women and they do some stunning silk tops.

I'm sorry Louise, I didn't mean anything by it! A cousin of mine shops there, and she always looks really well put together and glamorous. But she's in her late 40s (and a fair bit thinner than I am) so we have slightly different looks.

Budget ok, can probably afford to spend up to £150 on something special and get a few cheaper things as well. Haven't thought about jumpsuits. Need to be brave and get out of my rut!

Vodka absolutely no offence taken! I didn't think you did, it just made me smile because I am indeed older.

Whatever you wear, have a great time. I may go back to Lindos in September after a 30 year absence (I regularly go to other parts of Greece though.)

Hi Vodka, we go to Greece nearly every other year. I'm about the same size/shape as you, and my go-to's are maxi dresses with beaded flats and a statement necklace or earrings (not both). Knee lenth A-line dresses in linen/jersey, again with beaded flats and a statement necklace. Also got some wide-legged lightweight crepe trousers that I bought in M & S which I wear with floaty tops.

Funnily enough my beaded flats come from Lindos! Friends go every year and bring me a pair back for my birthday. Note to self: must angle for gold pair this year......

Have a great time!
