Ok, am I mad to buy these bags?

Can't decide between Mulberry small Bayswater or small satchel in oak: £850 and £895 respectively.

I want a classic that will last forever and not date. Have a black Bayswater (years old) that looks beautiful still.

Should I buy one?

If you're not keen on the wings definitely don't buy it. It's mad to make compromises at £895 Grin

Why don't you go off for a day and try out some new bags? Selfridges/Harrods/Harvey nicks/other places better than that ?

AvoidingCallenetics · 12/06/2017 07:27

I love the first one, really dislike the second. Do not like the wings at all. So I would definitely get the first.

I know you have one already, but if you were thinking of buying online without looking at it irl first then I would really advise against. I think that you cannot assume that the new one will be the same as the old, just in a different colour. Many people say that mulberry have changed.

That said, I think the first is classic and in a nice neutral colour that you can use all the time.
If you wanted a brighter bag, I'd look at Coach (who as luck would have it are having a sale), which has lots at a lower price point, while still being really lovely, well made bags. Or Grandala.

For £850, I think classic is the way to go.

Enjoy your new bag!

squiz81 · 12/06/2017 07:43

I'd say don't spend that much if you have doubts!
Are you able to sell the one that's too small to go towards it?
Are you set on the Mulberry brand?

OhWellNeverMindEh · 12/06/2017 07:46

I'll return the small one to the shop and look in there.

Crumbs, I wish they made the Bayswater's without Those wings!!!

I think both bags look dated, but of the two much prefer the satchel.

blueskyinmarch · 12/06/2017 07:49

I think tan is perfect for summer too. I recently bought this Fossil bag. It is a lot cheaper than the Mulberry one so not such a classic but it is a fantastic size and i use it a lot.

tiba · 12/06/2017 07:51

I got bought a smaller bag than I was used to end of last year.
It was a special birthday present and coat around £500.

If I had bought it myself I would have bought the larger version.

However, I use it a lot.

It's nice having the option of a smaller lighter handbag, especially throughout the summer months as it doesn't weight me down and keep me hot.

On days that I have a lot to carry I use one of my other larger bags.

So if you have saved up to buy your smaller bag, maybe reconsider the size before sending it back.

Why does a bag need

I like the Rosewater colour, neutral and would go with anything

laurzj82 · 12/06/2017 08:04

Ooh buy it!! I will never be able to afford one unless I win the lottery or something but I would love a bayswater! I say if you can afford it and it makes you happy, go for it Smile

MissWimpyDimple · 12/06/2017 08:06

Rose water or dune are lovely. The oak is very dark and looks a bit dated IMO

seoulsurvivor · 12/06/2017 08:12

I think that if you don't have almost 1000 pounds to throw away on a bag, you shouldn't buy one that you're not 100% sure about.

Be honest with yourself. Are you just buying it for the name, or do you really like it?

I had a Topshop bag that lasted for about 5 years and EVERYBODY commented on how nice it was. I loved that bag, and really only got rid of it because I got bored of it.

Yes, expensive bags CAN be better quality, but not always. Read plenty of reviews first, unless money is no object.

Floisme · 12/06/2017 08:24

Bags leave me cold so you could ask why I'm even on this thread and you'd have a point. Anyway I'm here now and all I would say is that, if you really want something that won't ever date (and personally I think everything dates but that's for another thread) then I wouldn't pick a fashionable brand like Mulberry. I would either keep saving and try and get enough money together for ... well I guess something like Chanel, who are kind of beyond fashion. Or if that's not going to happen, I'd go for a less known, under-the-radar brand.

seoulsurvivor · 12/06/2017 08:27

Yes, I agree floisme . In my opinion (and sorry to any Mulberry owners), they're already a bit overdone and kind of the go-to bag for the crowd who feel they're too old/yummy mummy for Michael Kors.

Chanel is much more timeless. You could probably save the extra you need for them in one year, and you KNOW the quality is going to be much better.

Pouffealouffe · 12/06/2017 08:42

Hmm I don't like the first one, that style is rather dated and copied in my opinion. I think the second is smarter, but agree with going for one of the lighter colours (but remember to use a protector spray!).

chloechloe · 12/06/2017 09:15

Flipping heck, the miserable handbag bashing brigade is out in force today.

I prefer the first one but agree it's worth going and trying on a few in a shop if you can.

Oak is a great colour for summer - it's classic and goes with everything! Unless money is no object, I would never spend that much on a colourful bag as it would date much more quickly.

The summer sale should be starting soon - you could wait a bit and see if something you like is reduced, although it's unusual but not unheard of for oak to be in the same.

joannegrady90 · 12/06/2017 09:17

I don't like it op, really doesn't look worth the money!

SherlocksDeerstalker · 12/06/2017 09:25

Yes you should buy one if you love it and it will last you forever. You don't need permission from yourself to get something if you have the money! I'd go for the satchel myself - I like the style better than the Bayswater, which I've always been a little on the fence about.

I have two LV bags - a tan and dark brown neverfull which I use in the winter, and a nude shoulder strap style which I use in the spring and summer. It's nice to have something classic that goes with what you're wearing each season. (Weather season, not fashion season. I don't buy £1k+ bags every three months!)

Somebody unthread mentioned Chanel but to me they always seem a bit 'old lady', with all the quilting and padding. Ultimately I'd choose which one you love, and the one you think you will get most use from.

BusterGonad · 12/06/2017 09:26

It's a very generic Mulberry bag and I think it's rather boring, but it's obviously your money op so spend it as you wish. For that type of money I'd want to be lusting after it and not be asking the MNetters for advice!

sofreakingtired · 12/06/2017 09:51

I'm a bit of a bag fiend, but unfortunately don't have the cash to stretch to this level! I'd love to have the first one - am not as keen on the shape of the second and think it would look dated a lot quicker. The first is dateless (in a good way, IMO)

LadyOfTheCanyon · 12/06/2017 10:17

I have a few Mulberry bags and I would agree that the quality has gone down the pan a bit in the last couple of years. It's thinner and more supple which suits a lot of the styles that I would use more lightly but the Bayswater is a workhorse that should be made of good thick hide, and the modern ones feel a bit flimsier than they were.
That said, Oak goes with everything so I would go for that one out of the two.
Have you considered pre-owned? Naughtipiginsnest is excellent and Bayswaters regularly come up in fantastic condition at about the £500 mark.
Much as I love Mulberry I'm starting to baulk at the prices a bit.

OldBagLady · 12/06/2017 10:36

I've got a small Bayswater satchel in bright orange and it's gorgeous! I do like the new design too. If you're going to splash out that much you should make an occasion of it. Head to Harrod's, a glass of champagne at the oyster bar, and then bag shopping!

smudgedlipstick · 12/06/2017 10:40

I prefer the first one, the second one seems very dull

smudgedlipstick · 12/06/2017 10:41

Also, tan goes with everything so will work all year round imo
