Street markets

Although I live in London, I have not been to a market (other than fruit and veg type) for quite a while. Reading an Elizabeth George @Inspector Linley' book, I was intrigued by a secretary trying to take Barbara havers in hand rgarding her (lack of) style and telling her of her own clothes secrets. She got most of her stuff from Petticoat Lane.

Does this market still exist, if so is it any good for clothes? Are there others that are????

TIA

There are still markets like Leather Lane (near Chancery Lane tube) & Portobello market that sell clothes. Usually a mixture of second hand and old season high street chain store stuff with the labels cut out.

I like Leather Lane - I work not too far from there. There's a stall that sells a lot of the high street stuff with the labels cut out, and not necessarily previous season either. There's also a couple of stalls that do linen dresses, tops etc. In fact I got my favourite dress there a couple of years go - khaki cocoon shape with short sleeves. Just throw it on for work with a nice pair of sandals and I'm good to go. Think I paid about £15-£20 if I remember rightly.

Having said that, the street markets aren't as good as they used to be IMO. I used to love going to the Roman Road in East London with my mum on a Saturday - we'd spend all day there (and yes, we did used to have pie and mash for lunch!).

Embarrased to admit I work right near Portobello but never remember to go there!!!!

Hi,

I use this website quite a bit (as I am not for London), it doesn't have too many place on in London yet, although it does have this one in West Norwood myartisanmarkets.co.uk/markets/west-norwood-feast/ The other markets I have seen, one called the Duck Pond Markets & another called Cabbages & Frocks - saw them both on twitter. Might be worth taking a look, particularly the latter.

Thanks for looking Nicki but I doubt I will go to West Norwood - I lived near there for a while. Might try Portobello today as it is Friday!
