...actually, scrap that. I HAVE got things done today. I have got a proper grip on my novel rewrite - the first section needs an overhaul but I've finally cracked that.

herbaceous · 01/06/2017 18:09

V pleasant day with Aged Ps. My mum is on the bed form she's been for at least a year. On the ball and very much 'herself'. So lad I didn't listen to the lemon-suckers who told me she had sudden-onset dementia six months ago.

Re skin care, I really feel I should understand the Ordinary stuff but it just turns to fuzzy static and a series of beeps in my head. I've used retin A before now but it's made my skin v sore. Is that the same as retinol? Currently Using some sort of serum and astral.

In S&B news I bought myself palette of 12 nude eye shadows, by maybelline, and they're bloody marvellous! Can throw everything else away.

Rosenspants · 01/06/2017 18:10

Sounds idyllic MrsW !

Embarrassingly absent facial skin care at this end. . Garnier skinactive BB cream..cheap as chips and not a retinoid in sight. Liz Earle C & P but not all the time...cleansing wipes quite a lot (Simple, I think,) and Nivea blue pot on occasion. Had to give up on M&S Liquid Gold...I came out in a crop of milia after using it for a few weeks!

NU good that the wake was a fitting celebration of life. Flowers

A bit fed up...amazing beautiful sunshine today but let self be dragged round the shops by DD looking for swimwear....unsuccessfully. There's a special kind of tiredness that goes with following a teen who is browsing...however she did get this skirt which looks like it was made for her and with a birthday voucher and her NUS discount, I only had to stump up a fiver.

Home tomorrow. Selfishly, I feel I haven't done much for myself Hmm

bigTillyMint · 01/06/2017 18:25

That's good news about your DM, Herbs.

Lovely skirt Rose.

I am currently using some Clinque freebies - facial and eye moisturiser. Very nice, but no idea what they contain!

MsMartini · 01/06/2017 19:05

MrsW, that all sounds fun.

That is sooo good about your dm, Herbs. Both my dm and my MIL seem to have pinked up recently - for almost opposite reasons I think. Life is odd.

And well done on rewrite, MI. I don't feel I have got much done either, feel rather hot and sticky, still bogged down with family admin and ever-changing arrangements, and trying to be resolutely cheerful with ds as he seems to be working hard but has a lot to do and some very reasonable worries.

hattymattie · 01/06/2017 19:08

I've more or less used Clinique all my life - I occasionally deviate then come back. I have used the L'oreal Retinol A night cream for a while but am now back to Clinique Repairwair.

I have heard that the doses of retinol required to make a difference would practically require a prescription. The amounts used are miniscule, so that the creams can be sold as cosmetics.

Had nice book club last night - our most intellectual member is leaving us - hopefully I'll manage to drag it back down to the excuse for a chat and a gossip that it used to be.

Cremolafoam · 01/06/2017 19:16

Rose, that's a shame about the liquid gold. The stuff I swapped with you was a primer that actually went off ( must have been a fresh thing) so unfortunately I didn't get to use all of it.
I really like dds latest outfit. Very Female Lead Grin
I know what u mean about the Ordinary and the ingredients. I think the idea is that it is the goop without the marketing. Biore is Japanese or Korean I think and they seem to know about modern skincare.Hmm
I know absolutely nada abouta it except what I've been advised on another thread. Willing to give anything a go. I am using Buffet as it's got all the stuff in plus Aveeno on top at night. Then the Olay firm up serum under my new Ordinary tinted foundation which is more like a tinted serum.

Mrs W your sailing trip sounds amazing.

MI, you deserve a wee rest.

motherinferior · 01/06/2017 19:37

I should say I haven't rewritten the whole first section - just the beginning! But it was so hard to kick off...

Stropperella · 01/06/2017 21:41

Well done on getting over that huge first hurdle, MI.
I think my stupid virus is finally thinking about moving on. Still have streaming nose and icky chest, but I appear to have regained the ability to think (always good).

I don't use any retinol products as they bring on my rosacea and make my broken capillaries way worse. I use the Body Shop facial oil 'oils of life' at night. I got in some in an advent calendar and was amazed at how nice it was and have now converted. It isn't cheap, but a bottle lasts for months and it seems to make a real difference. I use the Avene antirougeurs daycream with spf 20.

Cremolafoam · 01/06/2017 22:13

I am AngryAngryAngryAngryAngryAngryAngryAngry about Trumps decision to remove US from Paris agreement.
Hope his fucking Mar El Lago resort gets flooded.

CointreauVersial · 01/06/2017 22:32

But Crem, climate change is a myth, don't you know? Wink

Well done, MI, you sound like you've had a productive day.

Skincare - I'm hopelessly basic when it comes to skincare. I use Olay (brand loyalty after working there for years) or Boots No7. Double cleansing?? Sod that, a wet flannel in the shower does me. I'm not sure what retinol is, and I've never knowingly used an SPF on my face, unless I'm actually on holiday. Blush But, having said that, the M&S Advent Calendar has had me using all sorts of weird and wonderful things, but I'm not sure I've found anything I can't live without. The only things I've repurchased have been haircare products.

MsMartini · 01/06/2017 22:55

I know, Crem. Great video of John Kerry slating him on BBC site. And some states and mayors saying they will "live by Paris" - but how much harder without federal backing?

I seem to have missed the memo on skincare. I use high spf when sunny. My legs are scaly and I moisturise them sometimes but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Feeling a tad inadequate on the lotions front Smile.

Hatty, agree about the dosage issue. The ASA in the UK is onto this, but there is so much of it.

magimedi · 02/06/2017 07:18

Am also fairly lax about skincare but do moisturise .

Palmer's Cocoa butter body lotion really works for scaliness & is cheap!

magimedi · 02/06/2017 07:21

Am also v Angry about Trump's latest stupidity.

In the last year everyone seems to be getting more & more isolationist - it's so sad.

IDismyname · 02/06/2017 07:52

I'd forgotten about Palmers Cocoa Butter stuff. It's the only time I ever feel the urge to eat chocolate in the shower. I think they've branched out into other stuff. I concur. It's very good.

Quiet day here, marshalling packing for European departure of DS tomorrow. Glad DH talked sense into him last night, and offered to pay an overnight stay in Lyon. What with all the other kit going in the car, the rest is being packed in supermarket bags to fit in the gaps.

If anyone wants to explain The Ordinary stuff to me, I'm all ears. I think it's the science bit that scares me.

IDismyname · 02/06/2017 07:53

Oh yes. Trump is an ass. Am Shock and Angry

NUFC69 · 02/06/2017 07:59

Morning! I have always moisturised my face since I was about 15 - Pond's Day Cream back then. These days I vary it a bit: No. 7, Lacura or Avon (probably Avon most as I try to give business to a single mum I know). In addition I always put body lotion on my arms and legs. Atm I am using Hydromol cream on my legs as I found it was very good when I had to put cream in my knee scars. I never go out without SPF on my face, but I think my quite good for my age skin is probably due to my overweight. I don't think you can be slim/thin and have good skin as well. I suppose you can theoretically, but I think it's a trade off. My NDN (about 75) has a wonderful figure and dresses beautifully, but her neck is awful.

We had a wonderful day at the coast yesterday, it was sunny and the wind, for once, was warm. The DGC were delighted with the lighthouse and the lovely volunteers loaned them binoculars so we saw seals (I was desperate to see porpoises and dolphins which had also been seen this week, but no luck). The children also liked using the morse code machine and writing their names in flags.

DD and I went to a charity evening later to see a talk by a Colour Me Beautiful stylist which we both enjoyed, but agreed that we would rather not know that our favourite colour didn't suit us!

herbaceous · 02/06/2017 09:26

Trump is an overgrown toddler. But I've been cheered by the rest of the world, and much of the US, just saying they'll go ahead without him. He has to be sidestepped to get good stuff done, and that sidestepping is starting.

Rosenspants · 02/06/2017 09:29

I tend to agree, NU ...as someone once said..."It's your face or your arse..." and genes of course. My paternal grandmother had skin like a peach until the day she died, at 82. She never went in the sun as she burnt easily, and only ever used a little powder, rouge and lippy. No products.

Wrapping things up at this end and will drive home later on today. We have a weekend of joyful not revision as DD has the last of her retakes next week. I am imagining she will probably be studying maths and English again next year, though.....

Yes, Trump is a complete arse but we know that didn't we? Loving the mutiny from so many US states, though....

Cremolafoam · 02/06/2017 09:47

Indeed . It looks like the Republic of California.
Yay!Smile
Best of luck to dd Rose. She will ace it, i just know.

Dd arrives tomorrow and i am quaking a bit as her arrival tends to coincide with some Huge Pronouncement about
A a tattoo
B a new unsuitable friend or partner
C some change to her sexual orientation

Sad
bigTillyMint · 02/06/2017 11:00

Rose, my DM was/is the same re good skin. I think being plump helped too Grin

motherinferior · 02/06/2017 11:17

My mum looked a good decade younger than she was while tipping the scales at 7stone...

msmargarita · 02/06/2017 12:35

Most of it's luck , bones and good genes imo. tho i'm sure being keen on sun, sugar and caffeine has done my skin no good at all. haven't got to grips with lotions either, just moisturise at night and use tinted moisturiser in day.

those of you who are users/experts - how long until you notice a difference? (would give me a clue as to whether to try again)

msmargarita · 02/06/2017 12:36

Sorry, ps good luck, Crem!

MrsKlugscheisser · 02/06/2017 13:18

My Gran and my Mum's sister had good skin, but they never went in the sun. My mother has smoked 20 a day at least, for most of her life, and has always been a sun worshipper, refusing to use anything higher than factor 2. As a result, she looks like Auden.
