Sali Hughes on high street fashion for women over 35

Just read this - so true.

www.the-pool.com/fashion/fashion-honestly/2017/20/sali-hughes-on-the-british-high-street-dressing-women-over-35

I too long for those 'flattering frocks, neat at the shoulders, sleeves and neck, but with enough fabric around the middle to invisibly accommodate a bottle of red and more than 19 calories ...'

Someone asked about Emily and Finn a few pages back I think... I have one of their dresses, bought on a whim a couple of years ago from asos. It is 100% good quality cotton, lined, and fits me perfectly. Skirt length is to the knee. It's a touch brighter than I'd have liked, but I kept it because everything else about it was so perfect and it was on sale.

Every now and then I browse their site, and this has reminded me to do so again!

hollyisalovelyname · 26/05/2017 07:40

Artigiano has some lovely classic pieces.
Not cheap but good quality.

bookbook · 26/05/2017 08:35

I still get the Patra catalogue from when I bought one silk/wool v neck year ago. Prints area bit ott for me
Therealslimshady - have you tried Bella Di Notte for silk or silk/wool thermals - I have used them for years - (I am 5' '10" and they do different lengths) expensive, but worth it.
In fact if anyone needs basic vest type top , they do them in cotton, and other mixes, with or without lace bits , different straps/sleeves- they also sell some european label stuff -has anyone ever had Brax trousers ? tempted to try them .
Cotton camisoles/vests

Therealslimshady1 · 26/05/2017 08:41

I have had Brax trousers, they were a good fit

Floisme · 26/05/2017 09:32

I quite like the latest Poetry catalogue - sorry, can't link at the moment. I'm sure the clothes are much the same as in the last one but they look sharper somehow and more modern. I can't decide whether I'm just being taken in by better styling and photography or whether I should have taken more interest all along.
Prices a bit Whistles but nearly all natural fabrics - lots of sleeves, no ruffles or cutouts and some full length trousers for people who don't like them short.

bookbook · 26/05/2017 09:36

I love the linen skirts I bought from Poetry last year - they have washed and worn nicely ( though they do pucker ever so slightly along the seams- so a bit of extra ironing there- I bet they use cheaper thread on those). They have a couple of nice loose tops too in the catalogue

Missingthesea · 26/05/2017 17:47

I was at Bluewater today and saw the Jaeger store, and realised that I'd posted on here that it had closed down.
It hasn't closed down yet, it's having a closing down sale. Sorry for confusion.

As I was on the way out of House of Fraser a couple of younger women walked past me and I overheard one say "It's so disappointing when you have a picture in your head of what you want, and you just can't find it anywhere."

EleanorRigbysNeice · 27/05/2017 09:23

I like Poetry but, they seem to have huge stock issues, every season. Im a 14 and struggle every time. It's infuriating. And, I've noticed John Lewis have ceased to stock too.

PickAChew · 27/05/2017 10:23

Is one/all new to John Lewis? I picked up a lovely heavy blue t-shirt of theirs, yesterday and there was other stuff I'd definitely look at again. It's very much the denim basics that indigo was meant to be before it went to pot.

TheMightyMing · 27/05/2017 10:58

Anyone have an idea where I can get some fine cotton or silk fitted t shirts please , I want them very fitted to tuck into a leather skirt. I went all over yesterday they were either too thick , bulky, or not nice quality. I've got fairly muscly arms and broad shoulders but a small waist and I'm really struggling to find what I want. I don't mind paying if they are nice enough. Who'd have thought such simple items would be so difficult to source?

TheMightyMing · 27/05/2017 11:02

Actually I meant to post this. My friend came in work yesterday with a really pretty summer dress, a heavy cotton sleeveless style with a pleated waist. I admired it and she said it was her mothers who passed away over 20 years ago and that it was probably 30-40 years old. It was M and S with the proper old fashioned embroidered label. When you compare that to the monstrosities they sell now, which I count will still be wearable in 2 years never mind 40!!

bookbook · 27/05/2017 11:36

TheMightyMing - cotton vests/camisoles as I mentioned upthread are seamless, and really nice - have a look? some plain, some with lace from Bella Di Notte HERE

Floisme · 27/05/2017 12:10

I promise you there were plenty of monstrosities in M&S 40 years ago Grin But they were definitely better made monstrosities.

theclick · 27/05/2017 12:22

How about we start a thread for decent high street clothes for the over 35?

(Should point out I am 32, but still very much see the point of the article)

gracearchersghost · 27/05/2017 12:28

ming Toast make some fine- knit t shirts which wash well and keep their shape.

Floisme · 27/05/2017 12:50

I'm up for a thread on well made clothes at any age Wink

Can I just say that I think we should be careful not to romanticise the past too much. I'm a big vintage clothes fan so I know how great some of them are but there was also a lot of shite then. And it was expensive shite. We congratulate ourselves on how we keep up with fashion so much better than our parents/grandparents. I can tell you that my mum and my aunties loved clothes just as much as I do. They carried on wearing clothes that were dated and no longer suited them because they couldn't afford to keep buying new ones.

PickAChew · 27/05/2017 12:52

I think that this thread is serving that purpose pretty well @theclick

TheMightyMing · 27/05/2017 19:23

Thanks for the tips all! I'm going out in a minute and I'm wearing Top shop Jamie jeans ( new discovery - very impressed ) with an m and s white vest , but the vest just doesn't hit the spot it's too thick and a bit short :(

That's right, BV. My mum & all of her mates would have worn mini dresses in the 60s. Lucky mum had the legs for them! Up until the 80s they would have worn whatever the "look" was. With less choice available it would have been worn to the letter. I remember going shopping with her for blue eyeshadow, I think it was a pot by Barry M, in the early 80s...

ophiotaurus · 28/05/2017 18:56

Agree with every word.

Sarahlouboo · 28/05/2017 23:14

Yes times a million! Found this cheeky outfit on Zara website under 'officewear' when looking for new clothes for an interview recently www.zara.com/uk/en/woman/officewear/ruffled-skort-c816041p4233088.html

In what world?! I just keep, wearing the same things on rotation and it is getting depressing. It is like they don't actually want our money!

Floisme · 29/05/2017 09:01

I do think we've had it quite easy this last 15 years or so. Because fashion has been so tame compared to other recent decades, it's been possible to keep up without looking a tit. I would say this young generation has been the first in living memory that's been happy to dress like their parents and, if I'm honest, even while benefiting from it, I've found it rather strange. Maybe we're just seeing normal service being resumed and fashion drifting away from us.

hiveofactivity · 30/05/2017 15:45

I could have bought any number of lovely tops for work this weekend - muted colours/patterns, structured, minimalist shapes, demure necklines, no silly ruffles....
...if I was happy to show my bra off or have to wear a camisole underneath (on the tube? in 25 degrees? are you kidding?).

Reiss, Cos, &Other Stories, Massimo Dutti, French Connection - a sea of see-through pale fabrics.

KatharinaRosalie · 30/05/2017 15:49

Sarah I'm pretty sure this skort would raise some eyebrows in my office. Surely your bottoms should be long enough so the shirt does not stick out from the bottom?
