Putting together an outfit

I'm crap at it! How do you get good? Any tips? Do you buy individual items or complete outfits? Nothing I own seems to go with anything else!

I usually buy one statement item and buy coordinating colours to compliment it or work item to what I have already. I browse through websites and bookmark clothes I would like to buy and see if I have key pieces to go with them.

I only really buy online. It means I can try on the item with my existing wardrobe.

If I can't find 4-5 outfits that I love, look good in and will wear, then the item goes back.
