Most boring style thread ever - socks!

Where can I get decent quality socks from that don't wear out on the heels after 3 wearings?

All I want is plain dark coloured socks, no twee, cutesy animals, hearts and bows etc. Supermarket ones are hopeless (Tesco, Sainsburys, Waitrose). Same for John Lewis and M&S.

Feeling thoroughly embarrassed to post such a dull thread Blush but I seem to buy a pack of socks almost every other week at the moment!

God I hate the twee women's socks as well, OP. I don't want fucking sailboat or cat socks.

I bought some men's socks recently and they were plain grey which is what I wanted to wear with my boots. They were from Tesco though and I don't think they are going to last me very long so I am following with interest.

My favourites are Calvin Klein roll top ankle socks. They're not cheap, but they seem to last well. They sell them at John Lewis (and other places, I'm sure).

M&s plain black men's sports socks are lasting me well. Had some from next before these and they were terrible, ripped after a couple of washes.

GnatsChuff · 02/05/2017 19:05

My feet are only a size 4, so I suspect men's socks might be too big.

Think I have had some from Next that fell apart too.

How about trying the boys ones? They'll be cheaper too

GnatsChuff · 02/05/2017 20:32

Good plan. Will try that (and then spend all my time fishing them out of DS drawers because DH won't be able to tell the difference!)

My DH is very particular about socks. I bought him some falke ones when we were at an outlet shop on holiday and he loved them. They are pricey though. Not sure what the women's ones are like colour/pattern wise but worth checking out their website.

BunnyBunnyMooseMoose · 02/05/2017 20:39

The only socks that ever lasted longer than about a month for me are the Pringle ones.

MrsLettuce · 02/05/2017 20:46

BAM bamboo socks are amazing, really soft and incredibly hard wearing. The colour doesn't fade at all either. DP usually wears through socks like there's no tomorrow but these are still as good as new after more than a year. Might even be 2 years by now. Here, the black ones are towards the bottom of the second page.

I was going to say BAM too! Especially the ones with padded soles. They feel gorgeous.

OublietteBravo · 02/05/2017 20:49

Boys section at H&M. Girls section is worth a look too, but seems to have started being infiltrated by glitter

I can, and will, bore for hours about socks. They're very important! Merino is what you want - I've basically ditched most of my other socks and rotate through 7 pairs of plain navy merino socks from John Lewis - they are superb. Bought them nearly two years ago, still like new. Hardwearing, cool when hot, warm when cool and on a fortnight's heavy going city walking holiday. Rinsed out in sink. Could wear two days on the trot, no pong. But they were eight quid a pair but I got them in half price sale. Similar - m.johnlewis.com/search?search-term=Women%27s+merino+socks

If you want the very best that will last - Darn Tough (but awful colours), Smartwool or Icebreaker. They are £££ but you can sometimes pick them up on Sportspursuit on offer.

I've heard these are brilliant too www.figleaves.com/uk/falke-soft-merino-ankle-sock/1105338.html?c=ppc&src=gguk_feed&PRODUCT+GROUP&gclid=CJXb7IOC0tMCFS4W0wododMN5Q&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CJWb-4OC0tMCFbYh0wodSQYJKw

But yeah, boring sock talk. Expensive initial outlay but I wouldn't go back to socks that rode down, dug into my ankle or go concrete grey in the wash.

musicmum75 · 02/05/2017 21:41

Another vote for BAM bamboo socks. They are so lovely and soft. Like wearing a cloud on your feet!!

BestIsWest · 02/05/2017 21:45

I am a recent convert to merino. I have M&S men's merino in black and some thicker Rohan merino socks for boots and walking shoes. Binned all my other socks.

TroysMammy · 02/05/2017 21:46

Surprisingly I recommend Primark socks. Black with a coloured toe and cuff. I wear them to work during the winter months (6 or 7). They haven't worn out at all and I've used one set for 2 winters, 5 in a pack and washed weekly. The socks in Primark are the only things that fit me.

LtGreggs · 02/05/2017 21:48

As above, you need socks with wool in them. Wool IQ have been good ones. Also icebreaker.

A couple of pairs my Mum knitted for me have lasted a few years! Get knitting?? This may not be a very practical suggestion...

TheWayYouLookTonight · 02/05/2017 22:01

I like Elle socks - nice colours/designs and last ages. Various online places sell them.

Out2pasture · 02/05/2017 22:03

this brand claims to have a lifetime guarantee on their socks....
when I win the lotto I will place a big order :)
