Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Where to Start

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Grin

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are in as much detail as possible, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

Make sure you've read the earlier threads (or at the very least the first one and the linked docs) so we're not being asked to answer previously raised questions. It takes a lot of time and effort to answer these queries and often the answers can be found in previous threads, but if you still have questions relating specifically to you, use the following form to make life easier on us . Please note, the form is not here to generate a routine for you, sometimes it involves product recommendations but mostly it's there so we can answer a specific question without having to go back and forth endlessly. Also, not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Skin type:

Approx age (range):

Primary skin concern:

Routine :

AM :

PM :

Makeup : eg. no/light coverage/medium coverage/heavy coverage

Occasional treatments:

Things I've tried in the past with disastrous results:

Things that are really working well for me now:

Any dietary/health concerns/pregnant:

What I'm willing to spend on a single skincare item: eg. >£10, £10-20, £20-50, £50-100, no limits.

I specifically [want help with/am looking for a product to/am curious about trying]:

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

Shop now I'm worried mine will be a dud! I ordered replacement one a while ago now but still haven't finished my first bottle it's lasted me ages! I go on holiday Saturday too so will defo need to take new one as I think there's only couple more uses left in my first one Shock

Shop · 24/05/2017 17:35

I'd try it then mint they were super speedy sending the replacement

applepineapple · 24/05/2017 19:20

For anyone who is interested, LRP Toleriane Fluide is back in stock on Escentual at £12.75 Grin

mintmagnummm · 24/05/2017 20:36

I emailed them mint and they asked for the batch code so I told them and they replied saying they are sending me a replacement so I assume mine was dodgy too. I am super impressed with their customer care! What other products do u use? What's ur skin type?

mintleaves · 24/05/2017 20:55

Bo that's a good point about TO and skin types. I'm hypothesising that perhaps any good the Nia was doing me was down to the zinc I'm thinking there's other ways to get that - maybe the LRP serozinc spray, although I see that's aimed at oily skin too. I'm going to do some research.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before but has anyone used this website? It seems directed towards particular skin types/conditions and I'm not sure how robust their categorisation is, but the search function lets you search by 'does not contain' (e.g. parabens, fragrance, etc) which I thought might be a potentially useful shortcut for some of us.

helloskinshop.co.uk/

mintleaves · 24/05/2017 21:14

Also on the product pages on that website, it lists known side effects and (referenced and linked) notes about research and evidence. I know they're still trying to sell a product though, so I suppose it's a sales technique as much as a potential step in the right direction..

RubyGoat · 24/05/2017 22:51

I use the Serozinc spray twice daily. I am combination /sensitive, & tendency to be somewhat dehydrated. I suspect the Serozinc may be the product that's made the biggest impact in terms of improving overall skin health & texture - a lot less spots, & improved hydration since I started with it. I tend to bulk buy it from EPP now, as I really don't want to risk running out...

Ollivander84 · 24/05/2017 22:53

My wound is the itchiest thing in the world. Argh! Stitches out at least, the nurse measured and said its 3.5 inches so the surgeons "inch incision" was slightly off Grin

Nothing to report on my skin, the spot vanished Confused and it's back to its new perfect self. Haven't been wearing makeup really at all as I CBA putting it on (what's wrong with me?!)

Pupsiecola · 24/05/2017 23:29

I use Serozonic if I'm using an oil as my last step. So I will give myself a spray, leave it while I brush teeth then massage oil in (I find the oil goes on better too).

mintmagnummm · 25/05/2017 06:41

That was meant to say shop in my last post! I promise I wasn't talking to myself Grin

nicpick · 25/05/2017 07:03

I know you must get fed up with cluesless people like me BO jumping on board the thread, but it has helped me see a light at the end of the tunnel, i read everyday now, although half of the time get lost in what you are all talking about!!

mintmagnummm · 25/05/2017 07:44

I have my cleanser, day cream, night cream and spf in place now and have been using these for a fair while now. I feel I'm missing a hydrating serum and an 'active' to deal with surface irregularities, pores, and congestion. I have no clue what would be right for me.

botemp · 25/05/2017 10:33

Nickpic, Well, et. al. just to assure you, coming on here and asking questions (no matter how simple or redundant you fear them to be) are welcome, it's exactly what the thread is for. We don't see it much but if you're unsure whether a question is appropriate, the basic rule would be if it's simple enough to Google eg. 'What is an AHA?' then it's probably worth Googling instead vs. if it's more specific and Google can't give you a conclusive answer, eg. 'What type of AHA would help with a,b, and c, considering my sensitivities with X?'

The newbie requests discussed above that can be considered 'irksome' are those that simply fill in the form without much effort on their part and expect a quick fix solution with a 'let's give this a try then' attitude, not really acknowledging what this thread hopes to achieve with a slow methodical process. Those requests can feel somewhat entitled (not that people are aware of it, I'm sure), I think it may also be down to the type of skin. Hear me out on this, the majority of people on this thread genuinely struggle with their skin for some reason or the other, someone with relatively 'easy', balanced and unreactive skin who may finally be showing a bit of age in their early forties and figures something should be done about that will struggle to understand the need to be cautious or diligent when it comes to skincare or spend as much time as we do chatting about it. They've never really had a terrible reaction that lasted for months or had the state of their skin impact them psychologically so the support offered here by everyone (and this really is a group effort) just holds little or no value to that type of poster.

I always find it a positive sign when people come back continually, whether to troubleshoot or give feedback, no matter how small the contribution may be. Sometimes it's a few weeks or months in between but it's always encouraging to see how people have been progressing and hearing about their improvements (hopefully). For me, that's what makes this thread worthwhile. It also helps that I can moan endlessly about my hair and not receive exasperated faces in return, I'm sure you all have them but at least I don't have to see them Grin.

Thanks all for the input. I agree Dulci about the service aspect, I really have no interest in monetising this at all, not really all that eager about a blog either but I see its uses. I share your concerns about the whole raising someone up on a pedestal and following them blindly (I do sometimes wonder if this is related to the decline in religion but it's probably mostly a convenience thing). I'm always thankful that you remind people I'm no expert (not a passive-aggressive dig, genuinely appreciate this) because when I say, 'Use me as a source, preferably one of many sources then make up your own mind,' people take it for modesty. I'm actually somewhat surprised there hasn't been a backlash over the months so far, statistically, someone should have burned out surely. I'm also somewhat baffled over how much success people have, my 'method', if it could even be called that, is nothing novel or revolutionary. Mostly just sensible with a healthy dose of caution and a forced slow pace, think the only thing that sets it apart is the direct access to discuss it here, the latter isn't my achievement, that really is the merit of those present on the thread.

So proposed changes:

-Moving the form to a Google form with the link in the OP for reference. Only to be used if asked by people on the thread if more information is necessary. I'll give access to the attached sheet with the responses but those that fill it in won't receive a copy (no email info asked) or have any means to copy paste it into the thread without a lot of tech savvy hassle. Unsolicited forms will be deleted.

-Rephrase the intro OP, with your permissions, I'll include some of the phrases from the thread as a result of this discussion and emphasise that this is a place of learning and support rather than an answer/solution query. Clarify we're not here to create routines for anyone by request but will act as a support system in curating one for yourself as you come to understand your skin and its concerns. It's sort of like not telling someone what diet to follow, rather discussing the advantages and pitfalls of nutrition instead.

-WRT product recs, I personally won't be writing out any routines anymore. I'll continue as I have done for some time now, give specific recs for phase 1: cleanser + mosituriser + SPF and general ingredients/product types to research for further phases or agree to discuss specific further recs once a poster has embedded phase 1 fully. Only allowing for exceptions when someone is in immediate skin crisis and needs a very specific temporary routine.

This might mean we'll see less new blood or see an influx of personal questions without context, we can always reevaluate after a period of time but I think it shouldn't scare off anyone indefinitely either. I've done a quick skim of the newbies over this last thread and there have certainly been fewer forms, may be down to the info sheets, I can't be certain but I do think they're helping at a basic level and adding to them will help. Also, on the very encouraging side, we've had a few newcomers who really put in the work by reading through all the old threads over a long period of time, making lots of notes, etc. and all they did was introduce themselves, wanting to join in and they did so seamlessly without the use of a form or merely using it to demonstrate the routine they built up themselves.

Apologies for another giant wall of text, I know I'm due some answers in between this discussion but I'm prioritising getting a draft up of the new OP for now. Really have appreciated everyone's input and thoughts on this and if there are concerns about the proposed changes, happy to hear those too.

I'm sorry for not reading the whole thread, but I wanted to recommend something and wasn't sure where would be appropriate (it seemed silly to start a new thread).

For anyone who's still plagued by the odd spot, I just bought hydrocolloid acne bandages from eBay and stuck them on a couple of spots overnight. Now they've completely cleared up and gone! I don't really know how they work but they seem great.

Hope it's okay to post it as a little tip in case it's new to anyone.

ohgoonthenjustonemore · 25/05/2017 12:12

I cannot believe that it took me so long to find these threads, but now I'm here I'm hooked ! The information and detail has been super informative. I have suffered through the years with acne, congestion, pigmentation and now wrinkles, I would flit from one 'miracle' product to the next and always end up disappointed, but thanks to these threads I stopped and really started to look into what ingredients I was putting on my skin and what actually does make a difference. For the first time in a long time I feel confident about the skincare choices I am making ! 💐 for you all Grin

Can I just say how much I loathe Summer for fashion and beauty. Flicking through Red mag today and there's not one single thing aimed at very pale white skin or anyone not gazelle legged. It's all itsy bitsy bikinis and bronzer. Tropical prints and yellow toned tinted moisturisers. I'm slim but wobbly and the colour of paper. Feel more dough like now. Couldn't have got a bad haircut at a worst time either.

Also to add to my self confidence blip, I notice some lines have developed on my upper chest over summer. Faint but there. Like the weight of my boobs has been pulling the skin downwards. Is there anything I can do about that?

(Sorry, realise there's far far worse going on.)

EnidButton · 25/05/2017 14:33

upper chest over Winter*

RubyGoat · 25/05/2017 14:58

I totally re the clothing / fashion issue, Enid. But actually I suspect there's very little decent, affordable fashion for anyone at present. It's all hideous polyester & bare midriffs.

Pupsiecola · 25/05/2017 16:53

I've just spent two hours traipsing the shops Enid and came back with one navy blue v necked tee-shirt. I'm pale too. 5'7". Hourglass. Size 12. EVERYTHING is voluminous and tent-like and round necked. These clothes would make me look HUGE. I just want some nice round/scooped/v necked tee-shirts that show my curves, not hide them. In winter I live in long sleeved tops with vest tops under (many different colours), mainly from Kettlewell Colours. Suits me and my style and my figure perfectly. But in Summer there is nothing comparable. Really gets you down.

eversions · 25/05/2017 17:08

I'm joining the summer wear frustration group! I love warm weather, but my summer wardrobe needs updating (badly) and I just can't find anything that's decently priced, that I like and that fits nicely. Is that too much to ask?!

Also, yes to hydrocolloid acne bandages! I use the COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch ones, and this just reminded me I need to get some more as I'm running out.

EnidButton · 25/05/2017 17:16

Glad it's not just me. You're right about this Summer being particularly bad. I'm an inch shorter and size 10 Pupsie, hourglass, so we sound very similar, it's all tents r us this year isn't it?

I slapped a lot of moisturiser on my chest (and spf) and went to do some gardening. I now how've soil stuck to my boobs. The glamour is strong today! 💅🏻

I'm living in long tall Sally tops and a maxi skirt off eBay (comes in loads of lengths, extra tall is floor length on me at 5ft 10!)
First walk done, 2 weeks after surgery. Managed 3k

botemp · 25/05/2017 17:44

Just came back from another failed round of shopping. Still nothing! I did actually see a very nice coat at All Saints - looks better in RL, don't know why they fitted the model in an M, I needed an XS and it was still big. It's really flattering on an hourglass figure, the collar is nice and stiff and sits high. However, we've gone straight from winter into summer temps here so I have absolutely no use for it and I think the 3/4 sleeves make it difficult for A/W. AS is also ridiculously priced in the EU but I'll keep an eye out for it in the sales.

Is the extreme summer annoyance an hourglass thing, I wonder? Although everyone on MN claims to be an hourglass when it's actually quite a rare body type. Initially, I thought my lack of finding anything was just me and having to adjust to different sizes but my shape is still the same and I never had much difficulty finding things before.

Pupsiecola · 25/05/2017 17:50

And to complicate matters almost more than I can bear, I have size 9.5 feet. Winter is easy - boots/trainers. Summer is a nightmare. I can't do dainty little sandals and flip flops. I look like a golf club, plus they're hard to find. You need to buy in February. I've had this problem for over 30 years. It's a lot better than it used to be. But still. Summer just depresses me from a what to wear point of view.
