Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Where to Start

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Grin

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are in as much detail as possible, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

Make sure you've read the earlier threads (or at the very least the first one and the linked docs) so we're not being asked to answer previously raised questions. It takes a lot of time and effort to answer these queries and often the answers can be found in previous threads, but if you still have questions relating specifically to you, use the following form to make life easier on us . Please note, the form is not here to generate a routine for you, sometimes it involves product recommendations but mostly it's there so we can answer a specific question without having to go back and forth endlessly. Also, not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

Bunny I've not used that specific peel but I have used various other peels of theirs. It's not ideal to leave it on for longer than intended, how is your skin feeling today? Red, tight, painful, a bit burned, normal...?

I'm not sure there's a lot you can do now tbh but keeping your skin well hydrated and moisturised for the next few days (at least) may help to minimise any peeling. Don't panic though, it will have neutralised after a while so it wouldn't have been sizzling away all night. Did you wash/rinse your face last night?

EnidButton · 08/05/2017 16:40

Oh no, the skin thing is very off putting. I have had skin issues with B6 in the past. Maybe I should give it a miss then. I was dubious about it making that much difference to hair anyway. (Although the reports of it helping with muscle pain was encouraging.) Last thing I want it crap skin when I'm unhappy with my hair and it's starting to get balanced. Thank you for the advice. Thanks Lego that sounds interesting.

JDSTER · 08/05/2017 16:42

older I'm glad all is well.

Treeballarae · 08/05/2017 16:51

Hello everyone! I've been a longtime Mumsnet lurker but these threads have encouraged me to de-lurk and register. I've been reading these threads in order (probably started reading them just before Christmas) and taking notes (currently 12 pages of A4) and I've finally got up to date (slow reader) and just wanted to say hello to you all, and thank you for all the advice that you've given me (and each other) on skincare and other health matters. I have also been lurking on the Ashamed of My Beauty Product Hoard threads. I had a hoard back in 2011 thanks to q v c and the CH blog and I'm now much more mindful of my purchases. However, these fantastic skincare ingredients threads have been a missing part in my skincare learning and I feel much more able to choose products that I'm going to use and and like the results of.

EnidButton · 08/05/2017 17:16

Hi Tree Smile

I feel much more able to choose products that I'm going to use and and like the results of.

Yes! Now I think about it my spending on skincare products has really reduced. I would go into Boots, feel baffled by the choice and end up by all sorts because I couldn't decide but wanted to try something. Or read the latest skin care column/blog saying they'd found a miracle product which I'd buy. Then they'd all be wrong so I'd do the same again the next month. Ended up with a cupboard full of expensive products with just a bit used out of each.

Now there's one shelf with a nicely trimmed down group of things that I regularly use and I know what each one does and how. I know what I'm looking at when I go to buy something new and if I don't, I know to ask first.

Still learning but these threads have been a brilliant help.

EnidButton · 08/05/2017 17:18

Mind you, I say 'one shelf'...there's another shelf for bath stuff, one for hair stuff and one with a few unopened back ups bought when offers are on. All nicely organised though.

Way too much shampoo still though.

Ollivander84 · 08/05/2017 17:19

Enid - that worked for my skincare but now I'm trying the curly girl method for my hair GrinGrin definitely trial and error with this

EnidButton · 08/05/2017 17:31

Don't get me started on hair again. Hmm Grin

At least most hair products aren't as £££ as skincare stuff can be and can be used up most of the time. DH is working his way through my mainy abandoned shampoos.

EnidButton · 08/05/2017 17:31

*many

BunnyBunnyMooseMoose · 08/05/2017 18:25

@Dulcimena
I washed my face, waited half an hour (ph something something I read on one of these threads) and then used the peel. It was stinging a little for about a minute and then nothing so I totally forgot about it and went to sleep
My face is like usual, no redness, not dry, not tight, no sign of anything yet
I hope it's not like that footner thingy that supposed to start peeling after a week 😂 Although that did nothing either so maybe my skin is made of steel
I'll follow your advice and moisturise the hell out of it. Thanks!

Treeballarae · 08/05/2017 18:29

Thanks Enid, I dream of one skincare shelf nicely organised! I've been known to use up shampoos as hand wash and conditioners as shaving gel to use them up - I'm sure someone else, potentially Olli mentioned that somewhere upthread too.

I thought it might be useful mentioning that the LRP Anthelios XL Ultra Light SPF 50 is available on the Feel Unique sample shop in case anyone UK based wants to try it without shelling out the cost of the full bottle. You can choose 5 samples for £3.95. You only get 3ml but it was enough so I could see if I liked the texture and the smell and whether or not it gave me a white cast. It has been my favourite SPF so far (and I've tried Ultrasun face 30, Zelens SPF 30 No 7 Protect and Perfect SPF30 and Chanel UV Essentiel SPF30 and wasn't impressed with any of them). I bought the Biore from a Japanese seller on Amazon and it makes me flush probably due to the alcohol, so I am using that up on my neck at the moment with LRP on the rest of my face.

userallusedup · 08/05/2017 18:31

Hi Tree - I'm another one that was tempted out of lurkdom by this thread. I also had issues with serious over purchasing (and have a QVC addiction in my past too Blush) but I've been much more restrained since joining in here.

That being said I've just ordered the Innisfree no sebum powder (I got the tinted one) after reading the posts here about it - in my defence it was only £6 Smile & I also want to get some cicaplast hand cream.

Glad everything is ok older

LordWontYouBuyMeAMercedesBenz · 08/05/2017 18:40

Hello again, right I've read through the threads and help sheets, made lots of notes and ordered the following:

  • The Ordinary Advanced Retinoid 2%
  • The Ordinary Vit C suspension 23%
  • Nip & Fab pads
  • Pai skincare Age confidence facial oil
  • face theory glycolic Aha/bha clarifying cleanser.

I'm aware I'm still lacking a moisturiser. Ladies please can you advise which order I should use these products in, anything I should be careful of? My skin isn't particularly sensitive and I have had microdermabrasion and glycolic peels in the past.

I will keep looking for a moisturiser to go with the above.

Thank you all Smile

Dulcimena · 08/05/2017 18:57

Quick q for TO Vit C suspension users.

I use this, like it and have repurchased. It's hydrating and my skin looks glowy and healthy when I use it. Shouldn't it have a cumulative effect though? I was away with work the other week, didn't take it with me and my skin looked dull. That was the only thing missing from my routine.

Just wondering if the glowiness might be like the radiance you get from physical sunscreens, but instead of being zinc or titanium, it's suspended Vit C particles. Is that even possible?

EnidButton · 08/05/2017 19:01

User Did you get the loose powder or the pressed? I usually use loose as I find it goes on finer but pressed would be better for out if the house so not sure which to get. It's a great price.

EnidButton · 08/05/2017 19:02

Shampoo as Hand wash is a good idea.

userallusedup · 08/05/2017 19:54

Enid I got the pressed as I'm not a fan of loose powder, I like my powders portable and the loose stuff sometimes makes me sneeze which isn't good when I've just put my mascara on!

Dulci I'm a TO Vit C user but I've not really had a break from it since I started. I would have thought it should have a cumulative effect but I suppose it could just be the particles like you say. How long have you been using it, I'm only a month in so probably early days for it to have made a massive difference though I do think my skin looks a bit brighter.

Lord I use TO retinoid at night and TO Vit c in the morning, and your oil would be used after the actives but before your moisturiser. Others with more experience will be along to advise you but I'm wondering if that's overkill with the AHA/BHA stuff? Though I'm not very familiar with either product, I think nip fab are glycolic/salicylic aren't they? If you like the ordinary, their natural moisturising factors is a pretty innocuous basic moisturiser to use as the last step in your routine.

Ollivander84 · 08/05/2017 20:56

Shampoo is also good to use up for hand washing delicates, cleaning the sink and scrubbing the loo Grin

Treeballarae · 08/05/2017 21:39

Userall it's nice to meet another former QVC-er. I've not bought a beauty TSV for over a year, which was formerly unheard of. I was tempted a few weeks ago when they had a Beauty Day where they had loads of things on 4 easy pays - they had a NIOD set that had the multi molecular hyaluronic complex in it, but I've still got a hylamide sub q and a hydraluron to use up first.

I also tell myself "there will always be another deal"! It works sometimes!

Haha love it, Olli I could definitely use it for cleaning sink and loo #I'maslattern.

I'm looking forward to finishing my current products so I can start trying some of the products I've bookmarked from these threads.

userallusedup · 08/05/2017 22:10

Tree I used to be obsessed with their beauty TSVs, bought Elemis, Decleor, Liz Earle etc by the bucket load even though most of it had no effect and a lot of the stuff made me oily and spotty Angry And all the makeup omg Blush I could have opened my own shop!

I still have a peek on the website every now and again as I like Tarte and IT cosmetics makeup and it's hard to find them elsewhere in the UK, but other than those two brands & some Ultrasun I haven't bought anything for a good couple of years now. And easy pays are the devil - make you think you're getting a bargain when you're still paying a hefty price plus their over inflated P&P charges.

wiltingfast · 08/05/2017 22:58

EMPTIES

Bioderma Node shampoo; my v light fine curly hair and sensitive scalp really likes this. A rp Smile

TRIALS

Alpha arbutin
Niacinamide
Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate

Hmmm.

Remember now my combo skin is fussy.

Have abandoned above combo as too heavy/greasy for me. It definitely did lighten and even skin texture, but I would have to keep it up a good while I think, to address actual pigmentation. Just can't take it any more. Skin does not like niacinamide and the map is just about bearable (for me) with it. Have been on the bha practically every night!

Am using the aa now by dabbing a bit on the pigmentation.

So not a rp.

Retinoid 2% is going fine, no noticeable effect tbh! Makes me a tad dry but a bit of hydrating serum sorts it out. Still have some of the Vichy one, so have been using it up.

Bioderma spf spray, mentioned by pp already, mine works great, v fine spray, hardly know it's landed on the face! Will rp.

Eucerin spf anti aging sc 50+ I like the texture of this but suspect the anti aging bits might be slighty irritating. Prefer it to the anthelios which feels v greasy to me.

PLANNED PURCHASES
Probably hylamide subq but want NIOD CAIS

Want a vit c to continue with brightening and work on pigmentation. Not sure what yet.

SPECIAL MENTION
Bought an hourglass ambient powder and LOVE it!

Also smashbox light photo finish has been a v successful purchase, v minimal flushing only and not greasy at all.

Also, again smashbox (girl managed to sell me 2 products sucker ) under eye hydrating primer. Great depuffer. Great for those fine lines too. V pleased with these Grin

Whew, long post, must get back to catching up!

olderthanyouthink · 08/05/2017 23:09

Olli You've got curly hair too? Whats your texture like?
I did CG for a while, co-washing only for about a year and no-poo for a few months months, CG again and now I'm low-pooing. I think hormonal changes messed with my hair a fair bit so I'v changed track a few times and no-poo was too much bother.

Tree damn you, now I'm going to buy a billion samples probably all the hand creams and a mini sunscreen for my bag.

Thanks user

I need to scrunch the gel out but hair is still a tiny bit damp so I'm resisting touching it!
