Product for boys hair

Just wondering what you use to style your boys hair? My boy has really thick hair and if I'm not careful it can look rubbish. He starts high school this time so I want to get him in the habit of styling it.
Also, do you do it or does he?

Vo5 texturising gum, and VO5 Texture funkyshaper.

Can the barber thin it out a bit for him and give him some pointers how to style it?

It's always good for the first week after having it cut. I probably need to accept fortnightly haircuts.
