If you wear jeans to work, what do you do?

Inspired by another thread I've seen this morning, and got me to thinking.

I left the corporate world for many reasons, and one of them was actually the dress code. I hate wearing jackets and "smart" clothes and for some reason find doing so incredibly stressful. I can see how bizarre that sounds as I'm writing it. When I think about going back to work, one of the things which really makes me feel anxious is the thought of having to dress smartly.

Anyway, if your job allows you to wear jeans to work, what is it that you do? If you can be specific about your role instead of just industry that would be great, but understand that might not be possible for outing reasons. Thanks MN Smile

Fashion designer, I can wear whatever I like, sometimes I'm super casual, sometimes a bit smarter, it's just what I feel like on the day.

civil servant here. Jeans are fine, 'business dress' necessary for customer meetings but these are not that frequent - maybe one a month. 'Business dress' doesn't require a suit - a jersey dress or trousers and a top is fine.
DH does something computer-y. He always wears really scruffy clothes to work (and works at home a lot too).

ineedamoreadultieradult · 18/04/2017 20:46

Call centre, customer service, inbound

shortsaint · 18/04/2017 20:56

Arts. Pretty much anything goes, though I dress smart-casual to work as like to differentiate on weekends when I always wear jeans!

Trustyourself2 · 18/04/2017 20:56

Record company, video production. It was great. I work from home now, so can still wear what I like.

Silvertap · 18/04/2017 21:00

Farmer! Dressed up is jeans and a checked shirt for me

SomewhereNow · 18/04/2017 21:03

I'm a graphic designer and can wear jeans or pretty much anything else I want for work as our office is very casual. I spend a fair amount of time in a messy studio where I get covered in paint and glue so there's really no point wearing anything nice! I do dress more smartly for client meetings but may still wear jeans - probably dark ones though with a decent top or jacket.

My DH otoh is also a designer and he is only allowed to wear jeans on a Friday, smart casual the rest of the time.

I work in advertising. There is no dress code, you can wear whatever you like. I've seen everything from designer suits and cocktail dresses to ripped jeans and scuffed up trainers, nobody bats an eyelid either way.

Yes to jeans and I'm a management accountant. Jeans and a shirt are my life staple! :D

Trills · 18/04/2017 21:40

I work for a technology company.

I sometimes wear jeans to work. Not always. Depends on my mood.
I could wear jeans every day if I wanted to.

I never see anyone outside of my colleagues, I am not "customer-facing" in any way.

My work are also very good on things like flexible working and working from home, and other policies that make us more comfortable but do not in any way reduce the quality of our work.

countrygirl55 · 18/04/2017 21:53

Retail buyer for a chain of shops. Generally found in jeans or dungarees but pop on something dressier for meeting suppliers/senior management meetings. Very lucky that being a bit quirky and experimental in the fashion department is welcomed! Love a bit of vintage :)

Mablethorpe · 18/04/2017 21:59

I'm an office manager for a hosting company.

I wear jeans with a shirt/ blouse and heels most days, trousers or dresses when customers are in (which is rarely).

whereiscaroline · 18/04/2017 22:00

Thanks everyone! Seems civil service, IT and media are the most relaxed of all. Really surprised how many people are able to dress freely for work, it's opened my eyes!

I've never (other than 4 months as a Civil Servant - left rather rapidly) had a job where I've had to wear smart clothes every day.

These days: run my own mail order business - can wear whatever I like as our customers are at the other end of a computer / phone.

In the past: used to work in consultancy (economics). Wore a suit for client meetings, the rest of the time there was a definite but unspoken gradation. The more confident you were about your billing/general level of success, the scruffier you dressed. Mostly I just wore boring neutral casuals, but when I felt like indulging my inner competitiveness I would go to work in ripped combats and stripey holey punk jumper.

EBearhug · 18/04/2017 22:28

It isn't as if you have to wear a crinoline

I have worn a crinoline at work - I was working in a library and we were celebrating the centenary of a local famous author. I probably could have refused if I'd felt like it. It turns out hooped skirts are rubbish for work - shelving books is tricky when you can't get so close to the shelves.

I have also worked in the nip (on-call, logged on from my bed. Laptop camera is covered.) And also in pyjamas - on-call, no remote access to server, needed to go on-site. Expected it to be a five minute job (minus driving), so chucked a jumper over my pyjamas and put trainers on. It turned out not to be a five minute job, and about 4 1/2 hours later as I left site with everyone else turning up for a normal day's work, I was glad they were at least my best silk pyjamas. Just had to brazen it out as I left to go and get some sleep. Grin

I'm not recommending any of these dress options for work, mind you. You can go too casual...

LockedOutOfMN · 18/04/2017 23:32

I don't but colleagues, mostly female, do wear black or coloured jeans, i.e. not blue denim. (Dress code bans them but no one has ever been pulled up for contravening the dress code at this workplace, and one lady comes to school in what looks like a nightie for the whole spring, summer and early autumn). It's a school. I do wear blue denim jeans when we go out on day trips.

NoMudNoLotus · 18/04/2017 23:44

I wear jeans ... I'm a nurse.

purplehonesty · 18/04/2017 23:47

Early years practitioner

Don't always wear them tho and usually black ones but sometimes

antimatter · 18/04/2017 23:51

IT sector.

lazydog · 18/04/2017 23:57

Software Engineer.

I work from home now, so obviously can wear whatever I like, no matter how slobby, but even when I didn't work from home I still wore jeans most days.

bananafish81 · 19/04/2017 07:37

I work in digital agencies doing strategy for making websites and apps. Although at the moment (I'm freelance) I'm working in house at a creative company

They're all pretty identikit in their wacky decor meeting rooms (ping-pong as conference room table etc), office dogs allowed etc and most people wear jeans

The CEO and senior board team all wear jeans (blokes) although the one woman on the board tends to wear dresses and skirts, but that's mainly cos that's her style (I've never seen her in trousers full stop)

If I came in wearing cigarette trousers and heels and a silk blouse I would be asked what kind of fancy do I was going to after work

If a candidate turned up for an interview in a suit that would actually make a very poor first impression as it would raise questions about the cultural fit with the company

I'm on the senior leadership team - Today I'm wearing a shirt, skinny jeans and Adidas trainers

RegTheMonkey1 · 19/04/2017 15:54

Journalist on newspaper. Black jeans and boots, smart jacket on the back of my chair in case I need to go out and interview someone, it smartens the outfit up.
