If you wear jeans to work, what do you do?

Inspired by another thread I've seen this morning, and got me to thinking.

I left the corporate world for many reasons, and one of them was actually the dress code. I hate wearing jackets and "smart" clothes and for some reason find doing so incredibly stressful. I can see how bizarre that sounds as I'm writing it. When I think about going back to work, one of the things which really makes me feel anxious is the thought of having to dress smartly.

Anyway, if your job allows you to wear jeans to work, what is it that you do? If you can be specific about your role instead of just industry that would be great, but understand that might not be possible for outing reasons. Thanks MN Smile

I work for a trade union in a non-member facing office role.

olderthanyouthink · 18/04/2017 15:07

Web developer

I could wear pretty much want I want so long as it's relatively decent and clean. Some days I'm smarter than other, depends how I feel.

Really want a tutu to wear

froomeonthebroom · 18/04/2017 15:09

I'm an administrator for a school but mostly work in the evenings and from home, so wear what I want at those times. If I have to go in during the day I will wear smartish work stuff.

Sunshineandgin · 18/04/2017 15:10

I'm a nanny and wear jeans/chino style trousers most days. Anything durable that washes well and has pockets is what I look for when buying work clothes. Entirely functional practical wardrobe - my day dreams are that one day I'll work in the corporate world and wear nice clothes and make up every day!

MiriAmmerman · 18/04/2017 15:18

Office job (not corporate; public sector-y). Our dress code is quite relaxed smart casual. I normally wear jersey dresses with leggings or tights.

Lots of people (inc. me sometimes) wear black jeans with a nice top. Blue jeans (i.e. very obvious jeans) would only be ok on a dress-down day, but black ones (as long as no rips etc) are fine day to day.

Sheusedtobesomeonelse · 18/04/2017 15:25

I'm a PA in a relatively young and relaxed wind energy company (though my boss is anything but those 2 things) - we can wear whatever, though i wear smart dresses/heels/suits only on days where there are meetings / customers in our offices.
I love being able to wear dressy shorts though in the summer (not in the UK!) with heels, when i read on here about having to wear tights n stuff i shudder - i love having the freedom to dress up or down according to how i feel!

Musician. Jeans for rehearsals, evening dress for concerts. My wardrobe comprises a mix of jeans and floor length gowns!!

ClarkWGriswold · 18/04/2017 15:29

I work in administration in HE. We don't have a dress code and plenty of people wear jeans and casual clothes. Personally I wear smart casual because we work on the Vice-Chancellor's floor and my role is with the University Executive/Board but its nice to have the option to 'dress down' if I feel like it or if it is quiet in the office.

SpeckledyHen · 18/04/2017 15:37

Not jeans because they are too restrictive . But I wear stretchy trousers , hoodie , waterproof jacket , polo shirt and trainers as a support worker with severely autistic young people .

Fruitcocktail6 · 18/04/2017 15:45

Admin at a preschool. We have no dress code.

littlepooch · 18/04/2017 15:52

Lawyer -when I worked in house at a media company.

Now I work from home so can wear whatever I like! When I go into the city for client meetings then obviously I have to dress up. It's rare though as everything done over the phone nowadays.

rightknockered · 18/04/2017 16:38

Academia, but not ripped or anything, usually black or indigo

n0ne · 18/04/2017 16:45

I'm an accountant. I wouldn't wear casual (baggy, light-coloured) jeans to work but black, dark blue or grey skinnies with a smartish top is pretty much uniform in the offices I've worked in, and that's across a wide range of industries.

DayGlo · 18/04/2017 18:23

Education but professional services, not teaching.

I can get away with slim/skinny jeans, ankle boots and a nice top or blazer most days.

I only crack out the dress and heels for presentations or when meeting external peeps I need to impress.

Weebleswobbles · 18/04/2017 18:41

IT - I love love love not having to wear tights! I wear jeans, t-shirts and converse and I have saved so much money on not having to buy smart stuff and replace tights! (Also save s lot on washing/dry cleaning)

ChocolateSherberts2017 · 18/04/2017 18:56

Educational support role smart, dark jeans plus smart top and blazer or cardigan and boots.

RueDeDay · 18/04/2017 19:03

PA in the public sector

MarvinKMooney · 18/04/2017 19:07

Another one in HE here. I wear black or grey skinny jeans on days when I'm at my desk. I smarten up for open days and interview days when I go for slim ankle length trousers and brogues.

Whathaveilost · 18/04/2017 19:09

I work with teenagers ( but not a youth worker)
Even going to multi agency meeting I wear jeans and t shirts without a problem ( so does our manager)

ShesAStar · 18/04/2017 19:24

A potter/ homeware designer

wickedfairy · 18/04/2017 19:25

I work in Engineering/Manufacturing. All us engineers wear jeans, tops, trainers - very casual. Sales/office staff tend to be smarter but I don't think our company actually has a dress code..

It is a very large company. If we had visitors, some of us would smarten up, depends where the visitors are from. Sometimes if it other engineers, they are just as scruffy as we areSmile

explodingkittens · 18/04/2017 20:07

Academic. However I tend to keep jeans to 'office only' days - if I'm teaching or doing more 'outward-facing' stuff I'll be smarter.

I did find I was looking scruffier than my students at times and have made a bit of an effort to scrub up a bit more now. Still love a jeans and converse day though!

I definitely couldn't do a job where there was an expected dress code of eg: suits and heels.

DianaT1969 · 18/04/2017 20:15

I work in Events as a project manager. If I had to dress for a smart, corporate office now, I think it would be easier than it was in my 20s. Now we have Zara and Cos. I'd buy minimalist stuff and wear with low heels or brogues.

museumum · 18/04/2017 20:18

Arts & Culture organisation. I wear block colour jeans - navy, black, burgundy. I don't wear denim coloured ones.

Atenco · 18/04/2017 20:34

Self-employed, I always used to get into trouble about my terrible dress sense when I was an employee.
