Help me find this dress from about 20 years ago!

It's the dress Gwen Stefani wore in the video for Don't Speak. I wanted it then and never managed to find one similar.

Yesterday I saw the video and still loved the dress. I've been googling madly since and still can't find one like it. Gwen Stefani said she bought it from a thrift store around 1990 and it was made of a rayon material so draped beautifully.

Can anybody help? I have never coveted an item of clothing so long in my life!

I think your best option would be to find a good dress maker.

namegechanged · 16/04/2017 19:31

Laura Ashley used to have dresses like that.

namegechanged · 16/04/2017 19:31

Sorry - a long time ago!

OdinsLoveChild · 16/04/2017 19:34

Not exactly the same but this one is similar, maybe add your own buttons? www.lindybop.co.uk/dresses-c1/tea-day-dresses-c2/juliet-navy-polka-dot-tea-dress-p143

i was going to say the lindy bop juliet too. I have this dress and its lovely Smile

Semaphorically · 16/04/2017 20:05

What about this? It's viscose so it should drape nicely.

calilark · 16/04/2017 20:14

Coming along to say that this was absolutely not 20 years ago. No way. Nope. Christ I am old.

BadTasteFlump · 16/04/2017 21:56

Well I've just ordered the Lindy Bop one but am now hankering after the Nancy Mack one too - it's gorgeous! And since it's a different pattern maybe I should have both Grin

And yes cali I feel old too Grin

The Lindy bop Ionia dress (sorry link won't work) is also similar. I love her look in this video.

Floisme · 16/04/2017 22:36

I had at least two two like that. One was from M&S and I can't remember where else. Anyway the point is, there were lots of them around so I would try vintage stores, websites and weigh and pay sales. Then find someone who does alterations if you need to.

Sorry this is a super old post but I was also hunting down a version of this dress for so long and came across this thread! I managed to find something pretty damn close so had to share in case anyone else is still looking! joanieclothing.com/gwen-navy-polka-dot-tea-dress.html from a brand called Joanie and it's even called Gwen so obviously an homage.

Oldraver · 17/04/2020 17:42

AHHH an old thread, no wonder the links didnt work

and I love a Lindy Bop dress

squishedgrapes · 17/04/2020 19:37

Yes, I was wondering why the links didn't work. I like that dress. I've seen a similar one in Whistles, but no buttons

squishedgrapes · 17/04/2020 19:39

This is the Whistles dress. I quite like it, but it has sleeves

Oldraver · 18/04/2020 11:15

Well I reckon the OP has long forgotten, but couldn't resist

Not quite the same

MessyBob89 · 18/04/2020 12:09

@Oldraver Oh that's a good one!

Badtasteflump · 20/06/2020 23:06

Ooh @Oldraver I have definitely not forgotten! It just took me a couple of months to notice this thread had been resurrected Grin... I am still searching for the perfect Gwen Stefani dress sadly. I bought the Lindybop Juliet dress, but I still don't feel like it ticks the Gwen Stefani box. It's a lovely dress but looks very 40's so I've not worn it much as it feels a bit fancy dress (for me anyway). I have been inspired all over again by just seeing the video on MTV so am now frantically googling again. If I find anything I will report back. I'm tempted to try the Joanie one but I can see from the pic it's shorter than Gwen's, and I have a wardrobe fill of 'nearly Gwen' dresses already Blush
