Shoes for New York

So I'm planning a trip to the big apple for my 40th birthday next year!!!
I know it's a long way off but I've already started to think about my wardrobe..
We will be doing loads of walking around and so I need to find shoes that are mega comfy but not hideous nana shoes. Something between a trainer/ ballet pump/ sandal.. yeah that sounds hideous already doesn't it. But I also want them to look cool too.
Help I need your suggestions / links please.

Just get some trainers, you'll walk a lot and the streets / subway is pretty dirty.

Old, worn in trainers. DM wore some trendy sandals and they rubbed her feet raw.
Everybody wears trainers.

Sketchers memory foam light weight trainers.
Even with these my feet were absolutely killing me after a day walking in NY.

I recommend an open top bus hop on bus...the rest was heavenly.

So now I'm on the hunt for the best comfiest trainers to get them worn in..... Any suggestions?

If you have narrow feet, Adidas Gazelles.

Not such narrow feet, Adidas Superstars.

I'd get them there - I bought the exact same trainers I bought here for £110 for about £15 in an outlet store in the states!
