Do you throw clothes away that have developed small holes in?

Quite a few of my base layer tops and other tops have those teeny holes in from machine washing. I think this is more of a problem these days as materials are getting so thin. As it sometimes happens to fairly new items I am reluctant to throw them in the bin! I think I'd wear them under a cardie/jumper, or if I am just at home for the day. What do you do?

I mend them!

Using this method: here. You need lightweight fusible interfacing + some lightweight non-fusible interfacing.

I keep it if it's a favourite but only until one of the tiny holes gets too noticeable. I think these jokes are caused by cheap material - even when the clothes they appear in are expensive. I read a review on the Toast website that complained of these holes in a top. Toast replied asking the customer to get in touch as they wouldn't expect that 'quality' from their fabrics.

Holes not jokes Confused

KatherinaMinola · 07/05/2017 22:38

I just keep wearing them - and try and buy better quality next time. It is due to poor quality cotton (I have some good thick cotton tops and it never happens to them). In cashmere/silk/wool I would suspect moths.

DropZoneOne · 07/05/2017 22:46

I still wear them to go under things until the holes get too big. I have the same problem, always a little hole right where the edge of my jeans / trousers are.

Icapturethecast1e · 07/05/2017 22:52

I usually wear them underthings and around the house. If I get fed up with them I use them as cleaning cloths. Ain't holes suppose to be in fashion though? Everywhere I look people are walking around in holey jeans and leggings, we could take it a step further with our holey tops.Grin

OlennasWimple · 08/05/2017 03:36

i wear them until the holes become too noticeable

I get two little holes next to each other, about 3/4" apart, right on the front of my tops.

No idea where they come from, but it's very annoying!

babyinthacorner · 08/05/2017 03:44

Following!

Gigimia · 08/05/2017 06:37

Has anyone found anything that solves this problem other than wearing an apron or tucking your tops?

WipsGlitter · 08/05/2017 07:04

I've got a different pair of jeans and it seems to have stopped.

I did invisible mend a jumper very successfully.

Gigimia · 08/05/2017 09:31

There should be something that could fix this, it is a problem according to Google! The jeans manufacturers should come up with something because it seems to happen all too often and I am sick to death of wasting money on tees and tshirts!

RestingBitch · 08/05/2017 10:12

If it's base layer stuff I just ignore the hole, it it's a tshirt etc I will often just wear it 'round the house' or just wear a jumper/cardigan with it.

If the tops older and list it's shape I'll just throw it out - eventually Blush

Crunchyside · 08/05/2017 10:18

It's not moths, it's generally the thinness of the material. I get this with a lot of my cheap Primark tops and vests but it doesn't really matter because I wear them as base layers like you mention.

Undercoverbanana · 08/05/2017 10:19

I couldn't throw it away - I would demote to workwear.

halcyondays · 08/05/2017 10:21

I wouldn't throw them away, I'd just carry on wearing them.

Cydonia · 09/05/2017 12:49

I found my perfect t-shirt style in h&m, but they are terrible for getting these little holes in, so annoying! The latest one got a hole in before I'd even washed it! But cheap tops from other places eg George or New Look don't seem to be as prone to the holes. If anyone can recommend some decent t-shirts that aren't too clingy, or too baggy, long ish with elbow length sleeves that don't get holes in I'd be very grateful........

chesterindubai · 10/05/2017 19:30

Try the company hole with an accent on the e. Www.hole buttoncover.com

bigbadbarry · 10/05/2017 19:44

I get them too - I think it is the combination of jeans button plus seatbelt in the car.
I still wear them until they get too bad.

WhooooAmI24601 · 10/05/2017 19:51

Nope I throw them away because it would bother me enormously to wear anything with holes in. Totally irrational, but I can't cope. The cat leapt across the room a few week ago and used my knees as Pride Rock and pulled a few snags in my best jeans. I keep going to put them on and remembering and thinking "can't wear them for best any more".

CattyMcCatface · 10/05/2017 19:57

I have a few with tiny holes in, and I blame my cat. She sticks her claws out if you pick her up - and it is her back feet that rip tiny holes on the lower part of my tops. I should have learned my lesson after she did it on my new, favourite Per Una T-shirt!

flowerpothead · 10/05/2017 20:05

A tiny dab of washable fabric glue on the inside of the top works well. I've taken to holding certain tops up to the light after washing as often you can see a strand giving way and can glue it before it turns into a hole. Glue stops the hole getting bigger - like nail varnish on tights.

lindyloo57 · 10/05/2017 20:11

I never put my underwire bras in the machine, always hand wash, it make them last a lot longer, some of mine are over 6/7 years old, i do have a lot, over twenty, used to work in underwear shop, lots of freebees.

Gigimia · 10/05/2017 20:28

@chesterindubai - thank you! Just had a look on that website and ordered. Hopefully solves the problem of the tiny holes. If not, back to the drawing board but have my fingers crossed...

Mycatsaninja · 10/05/2017 23:53

It's the seatbelt in the car does it ! I have them too !! Very very annoying 😡

RockyBird · 11/05/2017 00:04

It has only happened to my clothes in the past 5-10 years.

I think washing powder plus crap material.
