Do you throw clothes away that have developed small holes in?

Quite a few of my base layer tops and other tops have those teeny holes in from machine washing. I think this is more of a problem these days as materials are getting so thin. As it sometimes happens to fairly new items I am reluctant to throw them in the bin! I think I'd wear them under a cardie/jumper, or if I am just at home for the day. What do you do?

Yep, it's the seatbelt! I will definitely try the fix from that video tutorial though.

jennymac · 11/05/2017 08:37

If it is a t-shirt, I would try to wear a vest top or something underneath in a similar colour so the holes aren't as obvious. It either has something to do with the button on jeans or the metal bit of the belt and rubbing against a worktop. Never happens to clothes that I just wear to work and change out of when I get home which rules out the washing machine or moth theories.

To those of you who throw them away, you can reuse them as rags to clean your house. It's very bad for the environment to toss out every top that develops a tiny hole.

elephantcuddles · 11/05/2017 08:49

Also darning a hole is not very hard.

Oops! I didn't realize someone already posted that video. Sorry 😐

I will let you know how those button covers go as well! I am rubbish with repair! I also use my old Ts for doing housework or relegating them to rags for cleaning around the house. If they can still be worn then I tend to donate. Think it's something that has Halle ed to fabrics uber the last 5 or so years as I do t remember having this problem previously?

Wtfdoicare · 15/05/2017 13:51

I originally started this thread and want to cry! A brand new top from white stuff, just a basic pima cotton long sleeved one has got the stomach holes in from being worn once and washed ONCE. I use a 40 degree eco wash. Grrr.

The only thing I can think of is I may have had some bras in the wash as well. From now on I'll separate them out or get a separate wash bag to wash them in so they don't catch on my tops. It's only mine, not my DCs, not DH's t-shirts.

Or my jeans - but if a jeans button is causing the holes after one day's wear the top must be of inferior quality.

@Wtfdoicare - I really think it's the jean button because the holes only happen in that one spot and no where else. I do agree that even if it is the jean button, the shirt should last longer than a day! Do you have stone worksurfaces? I think that makes the holes happen quicker.

Gigimia · 16/11/2017 09:45

Keep em, just wear them around the house. It’s definitely the jeans button and the holes have finally gone thanks to a cover I found!

Want2beme · 16/11/2017 09:58

I had this problem a while back. Turned out there was a sharp piece sticking out from my belt buckle which was catching my vest tops. I filed down the sharp bit and problem solved.

ArcheryAnnie · 16/11/2017 10:05

I sew up the hole, and carry on wearing them.

DenPerry · 16/11/2017 10:45

I wear thrm until they disintegrate Grin I was worse whenI was younger, never even bothered to sew them up...

Gingernaut · 16/11/2017 10:48

I've bought moth holed clothes from charity shops, repaired them (or had them repaired) and I am wearing them with patches.

Mulberrysilk · 16/11/2017 10:54

I have narrowed it down to one particular belt of mine that always causes them.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 16/11/2017 20:20

For me I;m pretty sure it's a combination of button on the top of jeans and leaning on my granite worktop! Took me ages to work it out. Jeans buttons never sit flat on me, whatever the brand, and that mixed with standing at the worktop (inadvertently leaning against it) to work on laptop and read papers, ould appear to be the cause.

I never thought about seatbelts, but that's very valid as they do sit right at the pont where the holes appear...

RandomUsernameHere · 16/11/2017 20:23

I wear holey tops underneath things or use them as house clothes. When they are literally falling apart they go in the clothes recycling bank.

hashtagelfie · 16/11/2017 21:06

ZOMBIE THREAD!!!

But for what it’s worth, I buy a lot of clothes from boden so if they develop the tiny holes around my tummy I just send them back for an exchange under their 365 day policy..... they’ve not refused yet

Waxlyrically · 16/11/2017 21:09

I think it's a combination of granite work tops, a jeans type button and thinner cotton. Try wearing an already spoiled top back to front and standing at the sink/moving around as you would & It makes a hole astonishingly quickly. Wearing an apron or remembering to tuck my top in has slashed my holey top casualty rate dramatically!

creepingbuttercupdrivesmemad · 16/11/2017 21:16

Goodness, it may be a zombie thread, but I'm glad I found it! Those holes drive me mad - right in front of the stomach! I like the theories on here - seat belt / work surfaces etc.

Why do people delight in telling us something is a Zombie thread? Unless the thread was originally about something 'current' it's still just as relevant now as when it first started, surely.
