How to look expensive in 2017

Inspired by How to look expensive 1 & 2 (loved those threads)

The clothes on sale this year are terrible beyond belief and really poor quality.
What are your tips for not looking like you've been dragged through a hedge backwards? Especially if you don't have enough money to buy from the more expensive shops?

This year I'm saving any spare money for the hairdresser and possibly shoes.

What makes you look cheap and what makes you look expensive (polished)

CrowRoad I got mine from Maria Tash when I had my helix pierced. Pricey but I'm allergic to a lot of metals and it was a gift to myself Grin

I'm sorry but piercings and more than one set of earrings is definitely not classy - aka here as "expensive".

bananafish81 · 16/04/2017 16:23

I think Maria Tash jewelery and piercings are stunning!

Her helix and tragus jewellery is so beautiful

I'm debating a triple forward helix Grin

Not at all Olive, yachting is quite old school. The men tend to do the flashing around and going up for prize givings, the women tend to be at the side cheering. Very few 'wives' tend to race with the husband. I don't necessarily agree, but it has been my experience. I specified owners because it is a different level of wealth to the common or garden yachty.

Laska5772 · 16/04/2017 17:50

Witsender I think you are just up the road from me .. Wink. (I am WW though so get the Gaffers and DFL lot all summer ) I agree with you its a look but not one I go for .. So many 'all the gear no idea' (oh and lots of the' older bloke red trouser brigade' our end) .. I do go out in a boat sometimes though, but my stuff is pretty old and tatty,

0live · 16/04/2017 17:54

I guess I thought that if you are a married couple and you both own and use an expensive item like a holiday home or yacht, then you both own it. It's not a personal item like a pair of shoes.

I wouldn't say " I'm a home owner and he is the owner's husband " . I'd say " we are the home owners ". But I guess I don't know so many " old school " people.

Thanks for explaining and sorry for derailing the thread, I was just curious Grin.

witsender · 16/04/2017 18:03

That's ok, I know how it sounded. As Laska may be able to certify if she has been there, there really is an 'owner' and 'owner's wife' style thing still going on come summer. Not in the beer tents though, in there it is all comers!

Hi Laska! Yes, sounds like it. I don't relish it getting warmer, the streets are getting busier!

witsender · 16/04/2017 18:04

My dad is a red trouserer too. He's an old scruffy one though. Grin

Speak for yourself, user I define class by how someone conducts themselves, not by the number of holes they have. And FYI, telling others what is not classy, is not classy Smile

bananafish go for it. I have a black diamond hoop and gold clicker. A lot of the piercings on Instagram are very pretty, a triple forward helix sounds great

happypoobum · 16/04/2017 19:34

Threw out my converse low tops when I Kondo'd so just ordered some gazelles. Got a 10% off coupon for ASOS so they were £65.

Praying they fit and are comfy.

How predictable. Zzzzzzzz

0live · 16/04/2017 20:44

It's a bit silly to go onto a style and beauty thread and say " It doesn't matter what you wear" .

And " Don't give other people advice " when the thread has been started by someone asking for advice.

Hmm
bananafish81 · 16/04/2017 20:49

I personally think as with anything, it's how you do it

A subtle, tasteful diamond in a tragus or helix piercing is to me classier than a gaudy single lobe piercing

IMO it's the style you choose - I don't think multiple holes are automatically un -stylish. Others may disagree and that's fine.

I'm gonna go and lust after gorgeous Maria Tash jewelery!!

TurnipCake · 16/04/2017 20:51

Yet still more original than your off-the-peg username Wink

bananafish have fun with it, I keep lusting after the ears online who've been 'Tashed'

itsacatastrophe · 16/04/2017 21:24

Come on ladies let be nice to one another. Be classy inside as well as on the outside Wink

I do not like trainers but could do with a pair for long walking so which do we think is the more sophisticated option: converse, vans or superga? Or any other thoughts? Budget £50. Oh and how to style them for extra point.

happypoobum · 16/04/2017 21:35

I just got Adidas gazelles for £65 with a 10% discount at ASOS. They look great but am worried they might come up a bit small - anyone know?

It's these ones

Those are not my hairy ankles Easter Grin

I get on fine with converse but I have flat feet. I would like to try supergas.

0live · 16/04/2017 22:19

Converse , Vans and Superga all have very different fits. So I would try them all on and go for the ones that are the most comfortable.

There are lots of other stylish trainers as well, if you look around.

For styling - try Pinterest, it has a good search function . But only if you have a drink in your hand and an entire evening to spare.

user1489179512 · 16/04/2017 23:19

My username was given to me by Mumsnet. I have no idea how to get a "proper" name.

bananafish81 · 16/04/2017 23:33

I'm jonesing after both superga and gazelles - I wear my Stan Smiths to work a lot and need some more nice sneaks to rotate around.

Pinterest is awesome for styling ideas - although I still struggle with wearing trainers without socks (sweaty feet, shoes rub, plus I have orthotic insoles that I wear inside all my shoes and they're not comfortable with bare feet) - and trainer socks just end up slipping

My not so elegant solution is a pop sock....

....any suggestions how to get the street style bare ankle + white trainers look without actually foregoing socks?!

Any suggestions for trainer socks that will stay on?

bananafish81 · 16/04/2017 23:36

BTW for anyone with flat feet, can strongly recommend Scholl insoles (tbh I can recommend them anyway as it's easy to pronate in Converse) - my physio said they were the best regular ones to use until I got my orthotics. They're about £20 from Boots - well worthwhile for most shoes tbh.

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/04/2017 23:40

I think multiple ear piercings can look great. 'Classy' is very subjective. To some people it will be quite a rigid and classic look e.g. cashmere twinset and pearls, but to someone else it will be classic with an edge, and that edge might include multiple Maria Tash style earrings.

AgathaMystery · 16/04/2017 23:46

Love this thread - loved the other 2 as well.

I am 5"2 - a fat hourglass (14) & in my late 30's. I'm growing out a fucking disastrous haircut (I cannot stress how hideous it is) but my Q is...

Can anyone recommend a blazer for me for spring/summer? I currently have a pale pink stretch tweed one from Joules but it is going on eBay. I have huge boobs and tiny & shoulders waist with big thighs. My current blazer is way way too short. I would like one in Pink or navy or grey.

Any suggestions? Hmm

AgathaMystery · 16/04/2017 23:50

Oh & I meant to say... looking classy/expensive.

I think a decent pair of jeans (always hunting). A selection of quality leather pumps, a classic bag (Bayswater etc) & a decent watch (not MK etc and probably not in rose gold - tho I like it). I have a wish list each year and this year need:

Oak leather knee high boots
A decent coat
The perfect jeans
The perfect blazer

OhTheRoses · 17/04/2017 00:00

Well cut and coloured (if necessary) hair
Good teeth
Good shoes and bag
Good posture
Neat hands
Well cut/put together clothes
Discreet, quality jewellery
Good jacket/coat

Evening all

This is my second post here and as you'll see from my subject title I've mostly joined for this section. I may wander over to stepparents too..

I've been lurking for a little while and have enjoyed the discussions. I want to look effortless, definitely classy - a simple but elegant look. I think how a person carries themselves and interacts with others is also key.

HPB: I have some Supergas but I wouldn't put them in the classy category. They are v comfortable though. Casual classy is harder than work smart classy.

I also have a few questions I'd appreciate some advice with please Blush

As a clear winter I love navy and jewel colours inc blues. If you had a navy short sleeved silk top and black trousers, what colour jacket would you go for for work? Would you ever wear another shade of blue or would you go for a different colour?

On that note, if you had a fairly plain navy dress with a gold buckle, and wanted to carry your beautiful pink handbag, what jewellery would you recommend? Budget around £300, suggestions appreciated.

Thanks all
