Help please...how to style a black dress for a wedding

Hi S&B geniuses.

I scored myself a gorgeous dress in a charity shop today, which fits beautifully and I absolutely love. I've lost weight recently so nothing I have fits, and this makes me feel fab. The only problem is that it's black.

I'm off to a wedding at the weekend and I have no idea what to wear/accessorise it with to brighten it up. I don't want to look like Auntie MorticiaConfusedcome to put a curse on the happy couple's firstborn child!

Any suggestions gratefully receivedFlowers

I think monochrome is very classy for a wedding. I would do a white/cream structured jacket, black and white bag and black/nude shoes personally.

ilovechocolates · 04/04/2017 15:40

My cousin had his wedding 14th December. I wore a black dress with white and silver flowers on it. I wore black strappy shoes and black bolero with a silver bag and pashmina and got complements.

greengoose21 · 04/04/2017 16:18

Ok, I've been cruising the charity shops today and have returned with a haul of £2 shoes and cardies. Couldn't find any structured jackets I liked. Here's the shoes...some are for work really

They are all nice! Personally I'd go with the purple or the middle cream ones then get a bag to match with a nice necklace or pair or earrings.

Can I just say you are a brill bargain hunter you have some gorgeous finds there!

greengoose21 · 04/04/2017 16:25

And here's the cardies...£3 this time

Cream shoes with real/turq or purple cardi or purple shoes purple cardi IMO, lots of nice options there though!

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 04/04/2017 16:45

Maybe try on a few combos and take some photos for feedback?

Veronicat · 04/04/2017 18:12

Well done You! That's a fabulous haul!
I love the purple shoes, they are gorgeous 😁

greengoose21 · 04/04/2017 18:30

I'll try a few combos tomorrow and post pics. FWIW DH says purple shoes and pashmina, though I couldn't wear tights with those shoes and my legs are looking decidedly 'early season'.

I am definitely feeling rather proud of myself Halofor my charitable activitiesBlush.

Wow you have great charity shops.. dont think i'd have got such good stuff here..

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 05/04/2017 16:02

I agree! If I went to my charity shop I'd have to accessorise with an 80 year old tie and two bashed up Tonka trucks on my feet. Grin

TitaniasCloset · 05/04/2017 16:17

You can always get sone fake tan from the pound shop for your legs. They do a brand that is a cheap dupe for st Tropez, I think its called st Moritz and has had great reviews.

PossibiliTea · 05/04/2017 16:51

Yeah st Mortiz is actually pretty good!

BikeRunSki · 05/04/2017 17:49

On "Shop Well for Less" a couple of weeks ago, they did a blind test of fake tans, and the label-loving-overspending lady preferred St Moritz to her usual posh one.

greengoose21 · 05/04/2017 18:27

St Moritz you say....(heads to pound shop)

Well I'm just getting ready for the off. I didn't have a chance to post pictures of a few combos, but this is my pick. The cardie does tie at the middle.

Thank you once again everyone Flowers

Fab! You look great!

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 08/04/2017 10:47

Wow what a gorgeous figure you have!

I think that outfit looks lovely. Enjoy the day.

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 08/04/2017 11:26

You look great! Very put together! And for less than £20!!??

Amazing. Enjoy the day.

SuburbanCrofter · 08/04/2017 14:47

Lovely! I like to think you were inspired by my blue cardi suggestion, even though yours is turquoise Grin

greengoose21 · 08/04/2017 19:46

Thank you all, you are so kind. I am feeling very proud of myself for my newly discovered bargain-tastic shopping skills. The dress was £9, shoes £2, cardie £3, pendant £1, bag £3...and tights from primark for £2. So £20 all in. But without this thread I wouldn't have had a clue what to look for...and not just for the wedding, but for everyday outfits too.Confused So FlowersWinethanks so much everybody who ever posts a link or a picture of something.

I definitely can't take any credit for the figure mind you. I owe that entirely to BIWI and her incredible low carb boot camp thread, which has helped me lose almost two stone since New year. I am a different woman for sure.

TitaniasCloset · 10/04/2017 15:00

You look lovely op, what is this boot camp thing?

greengoose21 · 10/04/2017 15:58

Thank you. Flowers. The bootcamp thing is a thread on Mumsnet, in the Big/Slim/Whatever Weight Loss topic.

An angel (with a big stick) called BIWI runs a 10 week low carb high fat way of eating programme a few times a year; there's a spreadsheet with the rules, recipes etc. weekly weigh-ins, and loads and loads of supportive people on the thread. It may not work for everyone, but it's been incredible for me.
