Holiday clothes for the short and fat

Off to Florida soon - and although I'm not enormous - I am short and a size 14 with big thighs and horrid legs

I need more flattering clothes that also can compete with the heat and can last a whole day in the parks - asking too much?

I also like to keep my shoulders covered as I am guaranteed to burn there

Anyone seen anything good? I'm trailing through the websites of Debenhams, supermarkets - not feeling inspired...

How short are you? Could you get away with a maxi dress?

IamRonnieBiggs · 31/03/2017 20:14

5ft2 - but worried about thigh rub and maxi dresses usually are thin on top at they - thin straps etc?

Not all of them. You can get thick halter styles or even sleeved ones

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 31/03/2017 20:17

Thin jumpsuits, harem style pants, skater style dresses with little shorts under?

IamRonnieBiggs · 31/03/2017 20:21

I was looking at some harem pants in Tescos
I suspect a jumpsuit would make me look like an oopma lumpa

Shirt dress over cotton cycling shorts to do away with cub rub.
Loose tunic top over leggings.

walruswhiskers · 31/03/2017 20:33

You'll look TINY in Florida. Wear what is comfy.

DXBMermaid · 31/03/2017 20:53

You can't beat a cotton tunic and either leggings or cropped trousers for comfort in the heat.

When I wear a skirt or dress I wear sort of cotton cycling shorts underneath (not spanx as you will die in the heat!)

Make sure you have a few good fitting bra's too. The heat will make things rub more and the sweat will mean you'll need to wash them more often too.

Dress with cropped leggings under is what i go for on holiday. With belt/sandals. I've got a couple of these in different colours that i put a belt on. Cheap and cheerful! m2.hm.com/m/en_gb/productpage.0202017053.html#Dark blue/Striped

I found a fantastic pair of long shorts in a light material in Dorothy Perkins last summer. I got them for a city break and they were both very practical and very flattering on my big pear shaped arse and thighs.

scrappydappydoo · 31/03/2017 21:20

As a 5ft 4 size 18/20 who has been to Florida many times my advice would be to wear comfy and practical - most people no matter what their size or shape are in shorts and t-shirts. It's a totally different wardrobe to your average European beach holiday. Shoes are your big concern as you will walk miles. We find ultrasun all day suncream to work really well and we all burn easily.

nut3lla · 01/04/2017 09:40

Same shape & size as you. Comfort is best & shorts & t shirts are great. We went in October so much less rainy than other times. If it's rainy season think about what will also dry fast if you get soaked. Shock. I wore knee length shorts, cropped leggings & longer vest tops which swayed out at hips. Got them in Dorothy Perkins, next, m&s etc, nothing partic fancy. I also had some really nice light trousers which felt really cool some days, got them in new look petite section. You will be tiny there though so really don't worry too much would be my advice too. Grin Enjoy your hol!

I just bought this today and thought of this thread.

https://m.johnlewis.com/warehouse-stripe-gathered-waist-dress-blue-stripe/p/3189026?sku=236856447&skwcid=2dx0&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gclid=Cj0KEQjwn3GBRDc8rCnup-1x8wBEiQAdw3OAbhnYVlFkKrGBBR_JOjLeeifllFGe3h7vk9fdkPOFicaApLM8P8HAQ

I am much curvier than the model (12-14) and usually this sort of cotton dress makes me look like a sack of potatoes, but tried it on, on a whim. It's lovely. And I'm a few inches taller than you and it's to the knee on me so good for thigh coverage.

I love that also - I think we still have a warehouse in our town ?!?
