What is wrong with my mascara application technique that I end up with it on my eyelid?

I use eyelash curlers then benefit "they're real" - I think I'm doing an ok job then when I look back i have annoying little blobs of mascara on my eyelids, down at the bottom just behind my top eyelashes. What am I doing wrong?!! It looks really messy !

I dab the excess mascara off the wand before applying. Helps with the blobs.

Thank you! So too much mascara on the brush for me probably? What do you dab it on to avoid tissue fluff?

I lick an ear bud to clean it off, although will now definitely also try removing excess in advance

Wait till it's dried in then use a dry cotton bud to wipe any blobs or dots off, stops it smudging. I wipe any any excess off as I'm taking the wand out the tube rather than dabbing it off on anything else. Also don't pump the wand in and out of the tube, pushes loads of air in and makes it go clumpy quicker (at least that's what I find).

I wipe on a tissue first.
