Am I too old for this dress?

I'm looking for an outfit for a retirement do and can't find anything!
Love this Ted Baker dress but am scared of being mutton dressed as lamb.

I'm tall (5'11") and slimmish (10/12). Small bust, bit straight up and down actually. What do you think?

I don't think age should come into it. If you have the figure to pull it off, then what does age matter? I think the rules about dressing to an age are very outdated, particularly as people in general are wearing a lot better. If you have fantastic legs for example, then why shouldn't you wear shorts, playsuits etc. I'm 43 and have no problem getting my pins out, wearing bodycon dresses etc, they suit me, I don't even think about how old I am.
But I do agree with other posters, that if the material and cut looks cheap, then that's where it may not be suitable. I spend more for quality to make sure I look classy/elegant, rather than trying too hard.

Age doesn't come into it. If it fits if it looks good on you and if you feel good in it. Stuff everyone else. I like it and the bardot one down the page.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 15/03/2017 13:52

gingerbread I'm the same size as the OP and find dresses in that style (sort of short skater) tend to make me feel like a gangly adult wearing child's clothes. It's not just the short length but the high waist.

I think the general shape and length of the dress the OP picked is very flattering, I'm just not keen on the straps.

Shanshay · 15/03/2017 14:14

I don't think it's a particularly young dress if you've got the figure for it of course you should wear it! 42 isn't old.

NewPantsforaNewYear · 15/03/2017 15:12

Have you looked at Finery? I really like this dress except in the last photo where she is wearing it with disgusting tan trousers and think it would suit your shape.

NewPantsforaNewYear · 15/03/2017 15:16

And this one, although it's very different from the first.

Bluntness100 · 15/03/2017 15:16

I love this one.

I think the dress you posted is nice, but it's definetly very statement and look at me. Personal taste. I don't think you're too old for it though.

Pencilvester · 15/03/2017 15:21

I love the original dress amd think you should go for it!

PollytheDolly · 15/03/2017 15:49

I'm 44 and I'd wear that. Very sophisticated.

terrylene · 15/03/2017 15:54

I am too old for it. It looks cold Grin

GoodDayToYou · 15/03/2017 18:26

Haha! Terrylene I was thinking it needs a nice cardi! Grin

ScarlettDarling · 15/03/2017 21:55

Thanks all for the comments and suggestions.

Gingerbread that dress is really pretty but I'm in complete agreement with bubbins , that sort of style at my height and age just makes me feel like a huge overgrown child.

Newpants I'm afraid I really dislike the first dress you linked to. I prefer the second. Love the top part of it but not keen on the skirt, it's a bit shapeless for me.

Bluntness I loooove the dress you linked to and I've been looking at it myself for a while. I've convinced myself it's more of a wedding guest type dress though?

Breathdeep yes I like that dress but again I'm worried it's a bit young for me!!

Go and try it on!
If you are 5 ft 11 and slim, it will look really good and elegant on you. I think the straps are nice.

I would wear it myself if I could get my vest under it Wink (and it would look tarty on my because I am too booby). Borrow GoodDay's cardigan for now and it will see you through the summer Grin

ScarlettDarling · 16/03/2017 07:28

Thanks terry I will try it on (minus the vest!!) but the 'cheap' comments have put me off to be honest.

Starting to think I'll never find anything...this is why I never go out!
