If you are over 45, how do you stay fashionable?

Or do you? I love fashion but tend to just wear clothes that suit my shape/colouring these days. I feel quite confident in my look and as I've always been quite busty, I've had to accept that a lot of fashionable clothes are cut for a completely different body shape and would look ridiculous on me.

So I try and stay current with accessories, shoes, jewellery etc. Wondered how other pp deal with this...?

My All Saints is full of sewing machines. Why, just why?

Mine too. Dunno.

I lurk there but won't buy because they don't give refunds and I'm very indecisive . I have to try on in store and order online.

Kr1stina · 17/03/2017 16:35

Sorry bold fail.

ExConstance · 17/03/2017 16:37

Well, I'm 60, I don't think any differently about fashion now than I did 20 years ago. I still buy the odd thing from Top Shop, River Island and H&M and a few bits from Baukjen and Whistles. The main thing for me is not to wear frumpy shoes, no horrible Hotter and I look out for heels that look good but feel OK - Chie Mihara are best, but very expensive. I have to keep practicing wearing heels as it is easy to loose the skill.

Pagwatch · 17/03/2017 16:48

Scary ?

I'm lovely!

My face can be a bit slapped arse but honestly, I'm mostly nice.

The one in Glasgow is too. Strange.

TheFirstMrsDV · 17/03/2017 17:54

I have recently changed jobs. Still family work but not so much on the floor with the kids stuff.
So I get to wear shoes and tights instead of leggings with my lovely frocks.
Its SO much fun. I know its shallow but its one of the reasons I am enjoying it so much Grin

buggerthebotox · 17/03/2017 18:13

I've just realised I haven't tucked my tops into my trousers for many a long month year. Is it still possible once over 50?

TheFirstMrsDV · 17/03/2017 19:01

I only tuck in a bit.
About a third of the front.
That doesn't work with formal wear. That would look nuts

PickAChew · 17/03/2017 19:25

Newcastle all saints has a sewing machine window. I love it, tbh!

piddleypower · 17/03/2017 23:38

I am 48 and used to be totally boho hippy chick but as you get older you need a more structured look, unless you want to look just bat shit crazy. My mum is 78 and still cares a lot and looks fabulous at all times.

Personally I think those skinny silk scarves worn looped once round over a jumper or shirt have had their day and look very tired. Cos clothes are generally boxy which doesn't suit me. Used to like Clarks but they are generally quite frumpy I find. I know what is meant about classic jewellery - gold rope chains, opal rings, ruby necklace, that sort of thing is v ageing.

The trouble I find now is I have to trudge around about 250 shops to find one decent thing. And let's not start on sleeves!!

piddleypower · 17/03/2017 23:41

I think this is the kind of scarf look we are saying is out now?

mumsoftwins · 18/03/2017 00:14

Hey! I've found this very challenging as I worked in fashion before having my DCs. Being out of touch and having a brand new body (yes thank you DCs for seeing off my waistline). I found it easier to follow a few lighthearted instagrammers to get ideas really helped. If you want me to give you a list then please reply! Xxx

Lweji · 18/03/2017 07:45

When I wear a scarf it tends to be numbers 2, 4 or 11 in the figure. From the top left.

No more scarves for me - unless, obviously to keep warm. They draw the eye straight to the place where my jawline used to be.

Ah, maybe that explains the scarf lover / scarf hater divide.

I am using scarves to draw the eye up from the place where my waistline used to be Grin

Floisme · 18/03/2017 09:41

Kr1stina I think you may have solved one of the mysteries of the universe Grin

It also serves to illustrate (because I'm in a pontificating mood) why style advice based on age alone is such a crock of shit.

buggerthebotox · 18/03/2017 10:32

I too use a scarf to draw attention from my (lack of ) waist.

Talking about jowls, what's the most effective treatment?

Floisme · 18/03/2017 10:42

I don't know of any treatment for jowls that doesn't involve someone waving a scalpel in the region of your jugular.

Actually some people talk about facial exercises but I'm too lazy. I just keep my jawline free of clutter e.g. no earrings or high necks and I've had my hair cut a little bit shorter so that hopefully, you notice my cheekbones instead.

lizzieoak · 18/03/2017 11:28

Facial yoga is meant to help with jowls, but you have to do it almost daily.

buggerthebotox · 18/03/2017 16:16

I've looked into Thread Lift - or "lunchtime facelift" as some have called it. Anyone considered this/had this done?

TeenyfTroon · 18/03/2017 16:18

Yes please, mumsoftwins. I'm enjoying one Instagrammer mentioned upthread (myfashionable40s) Thank you to whoever that was.

Only I could do with one who's 60, short and has had twins...

mumsoftwins · 19/03/2017 14:57

TeenyFTroon sure! There is another conversation topic with these people in which is how I found them

Erica-Davies is a very nice slightly older blogger mum who finds amazing things in places like Sainsos!
Annaelerihart - she's younger but her style is timeless and she does Day outfits well (also very funny on Instagram)
Chloelovestoshop - mum of 2 or 3. Older, shops well (and a lot!!!!)

GertyTheGert · 19/03/2017 18:16

Myfashionable40s - what a fab site ! Thank you for bringing this to my attn! Altho the person running it is slim n decade/s younger than me, she has given me some fresh ideas! Via a quicky search on the blogs mentioned I also found Susie So So - fab guide to cheap bag which looks dear (H&M looky-likey) and also slogan sweatshirts/tops!

GertyTheGert · 19/03/2017 18:20

-2- Jowls - someone told me CACI is good for lifting - but you need to do a course. Anyone had experience of CACI? My pal said the girl she vaguely knows does look good on it - however she is @45 - is this why ie she probs isn't too skin-jowly yet, just needs a leetle tightening. Mine needs a bit more tightening up to the ears actually!!!!!

buggerthebotox · 19/03/2017 18:47

I've had a treatment similar to Caci, actually, called Genie. It was actually quite effective but I had to commit to a course of 10 weeks, I think it was. It was also a bit on the expensive side-£800ish.
