If you are over 45, how do you stay fashionable?

Destinysdaughter · 13/03/2017 18:07

Or do you? I love fashion but tend to just wear clothes that suit my shape/colouring these days. I feel quite confident in my look and as I've always been quite busty, I've had to accept that a lot of fashionable clothes are cut for a completely different body shape and would look ridiculous on me.

So I try and stay current with accessories, shoes, jewellery etc. Wondered how other pp deal with this...?

Thanks for what Confused???

Pagwatch · 17/03/2017 08:35

Niminy Grin yep - that's me, right there.

Yes Mumbod - I totally agree about trying stuff.
When I go shopping and can be arsed to try things on I always take in something that I just like the look of with no thought to whether it's my style or not. Sometimes you find something you didn't expect would suit you.
Going out with my DD is good for that. I can walk around a shop looking at items saying 'oh look at that- it's beautiful' and then go into the changing rooms with another boring t-shirt and she'll say 'try that on - it's what you're always telling me!'

Lweji · 17/03/2017 08:54

I'm 45 and I do bare my arms and shoulders and wear short skirts on occasion. (Just not bum skimming)
I do have toned legs and arms, but I also only wear bikinis and don't have a toned belly. :)

I don't think I have a style, as I like to wear from pearl clutching (no pearls, though) matching sets to chunky boots and skinnies, via hippie look.

I just like to have fun with clothes and to have different looks.

The same with hair. Sometimes I have it as a bob, then I grow it to shoulder length and below.

I do have some don'ts for me. No leggings. No harems.

Floisme · 17/03/2017 09:14

They're just clothes. Have fun with them.
Yes, yes, yes! The harder life gets, the more I love clothes. They act like a tonic.

I'm another one who doesn't look so good in pretty or floaty anymore, which is a shame as I used to love a vintage tea dress. I'm going back to a more androgynous look for the summer but still figuring it out as I'm curvier these days. Last time around I was trying for Annie Lennox in her 'Sweet Dreams' period but this time it's more Katharine Hepburn.

TheFirstMrsDV · 17/03/2017 10:35

I have to defend the scarf.
I totally get the point that they are ubiquitous and can be frumpy.
But I love a big ol scarf that can pull my outfit together. I don't do matchy matchy but I do like to look put together. My version of that might included silver jeans rather than beige linen though.

I show my arms. I don't like off the shoulder because I hate strapless bras.

I don't wear floaty now. I have very short hair and I find it doesn't look right. I have never like frills and flounces anyway.

They are on everything at the moment. WTF does a sweatshirt need a frill? Confused

I will wear a vintage tea dress. I don't count them as floaty. They were utility wear in the war Smile

Niminy · 17/03/2017 11:01

Silver jeans you say, MrsDV? You interest me strangely...

Floisme · 17/03/2017 11:02

I'd love to find a way to make my tea dresses work. I may try again with a tailored jacket.

Regarding arms: the short answer is, I always wear long or 3/4 length sleeves. I burn easily so in the summer, that's more comfortable anyway. But actually the tops of my arms and my shoulders are still in good nick - it's from mid arm to elbow that's shot.

The worst possible look for me is a floaty dress / top with short sleeves (tea dresses again!) They finish smack where the flapping starts and then the fabric accentuates it even further. I could probably carry off totally sleeveless in a structured fabric e.g. e.g. a tailored shift dress but I don't really have any call for that kind of outfit.

But never wear shrugs - can't stand them.

Lweji · 17/03/2017 11:06

Ah, Silver Jeans the company, not jeans in silver, presumably. Phew!

I always wear scarves in winter, but mostly out, not indoors. Sometimes I do wear funkyish scarves to make an outfit less boring. Sometimes in clashing colours.

Pagwatch · 17/03/2017 11:09

I'm betting MrsDV means silver coloured jeans, not the brand.
She could totally wear them.

Niminy · 17/03/2017 11:23

Just found myself googling silver coloured jeans and feeling very tempted.

Arms and shoulders. Sigh. I don't do off the shoulder as I don't like strapless bras, and my arms are pretty flappy. I find the most flattering lengths are just on the elbow or three quarter and I don't do sleeveless at all. The cap sleeve in my view is the sleeve of Satan.

Lweji · 17/03/2017 11:27

Silver coloured jeans wouldn't be my cup of tea, unless for a night out. :)

TheFirstMrsDV · 17/03/2017 11:33

Ha!
Silver coloured jeans and they are amazing.
I loves them.

Even more so because they only cost me a fiver.

I wear them with an over sized black teeshirt, half tucked in and black converse.

That is for daywear. If I wore them for a night out I would probably go with black very high heels and a black vest and black belt.

They really are lovely. Honest Grin

Floisme · 17/03/2017 11:33

I really, really want to like the cold shoulder thing. In theory it should be perfect for me (shoulders and tops of arms still good). But I just look and think 'nah'.

Off to google silver jeans.

TheFirstMrsDV · 17/03/2017 11:34

Aww thanks Pag
I could do with a boost today.

Pagwatch · 17/03/2017 11:36

You're welcome Grin

The time we met you looked like a rock chic and I looked like a friend of your mothers.

BellonaBelladonna · 17/03/2017 12:14

Oh I love this. Cant be doing with the neutral palette, age appropriate, classic pieces advice.

I've never suited that sort of thing. It isn't who I am at all. Just because I'm in my 40s doesn't mean I need to suddenly look dull and sensible.

I love the sound of silver jeans day or night and I would probably think someone wearing them had something interesting to say and also would be a laugh (a shallow assumption maybe but we all say something with what we choose to wear).

lizzieoak · 17/03/2017 12:26

Same as always bare naked legs. Saw a Japanese girl at the bus stop yesterday in a short skirt - wish I still had legs like that, all one colour!

TealStar · 17/03/2017 12:34

Damn you Mrs DV, I've just ordered me self some silver jeans!! I've been lusting after some for a while but you've inspired me to go for it. They were the last ones left and in the ASOS sale - just happened to be in my size!

MaQueen · 17/03/2017 12:55

I have an Alexander McQueen skull scarf, which I wear a lot...it is most definitely not frumpy.

I also have a few cold shoulder tops/sweaters as my shoulders are still rather nice and shapely. I have a black, single cold shoulder jumper from All Saints which always gets compliments.

buggerthebotox · 17/03/2017 13:01

Oooh I love All Saints!

TheFirstMrsDV · 17/03/2017 13:09

pag
That is not how I remember you!
Tsk.

TheFirstMrsDV · 17/03/2017 13:10

Ooh teal well done!

MaQueen · 17/03/2017 15:25

Me too bugger but I always kinda skulk around in there, as it's so intimidating Grin

Kr1stina · 17/03/2017 16:22

The time we met you looked like a rock chic and I looked like a friend of your mothers

This made me Grin. Although it's not how I imagine pag

buggerthebotox · 17/03/2017 16:27

I imagine pag as very, very scary.

I tend to skulk in All Saints too. But I did actually buy a t-shirt there in the sale. I've kept the bag as well saddo.

My All Saints is full of sewing machines. Why, just why?
