They pretty much are elastic WowOoo, they have little hooky bits at each end that go in behind the shoe eyelets to keep them in place. DD loves that they come in different colours.

My friend's teen wears them and gets on fine with them OP.

You can buy Vans that are plimsoll/skater style with elastic?
