Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether previous threads are worth reading, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Grin

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are in as much detail as possible, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

Make sure you've read the earlier threads (or at the very least the first one) so we're not being asked to answer previously raised questions. It takes a lot of time and effort to answer these queries and often the answers can be found in previous threads, but if you still have questions relating specifically to you, use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer one a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

bo I put too much info about my ivf medical stuff. 🙄 Blush

I missed snail wars completely! Where do I start to catch up please? No idea where I was.

I have post wheat cystic spots. Again. Why won't I learn. Not as bad as in the past as I can zineryt them, then cicaplast should help.

Got two little sample tubes of the new formula Lancôme idole ultra wear in 008. Only tested it for colour so far and it looks like a good match. Smile Also bought another diorshow mascara.

How's the head today Hollin? Or were you on the fizzy pop? 😁

EnidButton · 12/03/2017 18:16

And now I'm going to read all the Sunday supplement bits. Angry

EnidButton · 12/03/2017 18:17

That was mean to be a Smile not an angry face. 😊

hollinhurst84 · 12/03/2017 18:19

Nope, I was driving!

EnidButton · 12/03/2017 18:39

That's even better then. Smile

mintmagnummm · 12/03/2017 19:45

I really think the face theory are my HG creams! Star

Shop · 12/03/2017 19:52

Mine too mint

banivani · 12/03/2017 20:23

botemp where does your Swedish knowledge hail from? :D

mintmagnummm · 12/03/2017 21:04

Shop great to have finally found 'the ones' it's taken me bloody long enough!

EnidButton · 13/03/2017 00:39

I'm being followed around on Amazon by snail goo creams. Hmm

EnidButton · 13/03/2017 00:51

All caught up on the snail drama. I think. Can't believe I missed that.

banivani · 13/03/2017 07:59

Quick comment on the links above - I noticed that hairdressers always wash your hair twice and remember shampoo bottles always used to tell you to do that. I asked my hairdresser about it actually and there is a double cleanse thinking behind it, albeit using shampoo only mostly. Not that I do this mostly, CBA. And here I am with an itchy scalp.

I bought sheet masks in Poland when I was there and they are much drier, incidentally. But only single use.

Already wanting more from the snail drama. Haha.

Hollin, you look great and glad you had a good night!

Am itching to try TFT Regenacalm because DILL, my Polish MIL puts dill on everything because it's so good for you so I'm well conditioned to go for this.

mintmagnummm · 13/03/2017 13:58

Can someone please recommend me a lovely non irritating brush to apply bronzer?? I want something to just apply a light dusting all over face.

mintmagnummm · 13/03/2017 14:00

Oh and I'm looking for a grey/green eyeliner but cannot find this kind of shade anywhere

JDSTER · 13/03/2017 14:15

I'm just checking into the new thread. I've been away for a few days so just catching up.

Interesting buttercup on your Liberty experience. I'm in London in a couple of weeks and was wondering about popping in for BR50w travel size too. Like you I'm using vit c and I use a BHA and recently introduced TO retinoid 2% so I'm a but undecided about getting something else. I know we've discussed it a lot on here but really, what will it do for me over and above a BHA, vit c and retinoid? (I'm holding off TO niacinamide at the moment as I had a feeling it was contributing to sfs so I dropped it as I added the retinoid).

Thanks bo for Sunday supplement roundup-telomeres info interesting from Dr Sam in terms of mindeset, keeping calm etc.

california I really like the biore watery that you have in your 'basket' which is absolutely not thick and gloopy as you describe. It has a high alcohol content so I don't know if that's a problem in terms of your sensitivities. It absorbs instantly and I'm happy applying it daily.

Welcome to new posters as well Smile

botemp · 13/03/2017 14:52

Pupsie, Turmeric in skincare is an Indian thing (or at least of that region), usually a mask mixed with chickpea flour for 'brightening' but you need a turmeric that doesn't stain and I believe the effect is quite temporary. It is anti-inflammatory, so interesting in that sense, but I don't think it really performs in the same league as other actives (as far as I'm aware). Most of those affordable 'natural' brands tend to be alcohol based as it's cheap and effective to formulate and really the only way they can compete considering the inflated price of raw materials. Generally not so great for a lot of skin types though, very dry and dry do well with natural brands (as those formulations don't need the alcohol in it, like Hauschka's Rose cream), normal can be OK with it but combo-oily struggle and if you have dehydration issues it becomes even more complex.

Where did you buy the P50 from again (as people keep asking)?

goatkid, thanks for checking in again. Always love hearing how people (and their DP/DHs) are getting on. The feedback is always really helpful in further advising those with similar issues.

I would let the facetheory people know of their mistake, it would probably cost them more to retrieve it again than to let you keep it but more importantly, they're a small startup where losses like this on a larger scale could be detrimental. If there's an issue with logistics it's only fair they're aware of the issues.

Buttercup and wilting, P50 should be considered like an active so in that sense, yes, you use it on its own but I restrict that to a single routine and there's very few who really use P50 AM and PM on the daily. AHA toners definitely enhance the efficacy of other actives (hence the existence of lower strength acid toners) by exfoliating the upper lining but in the case of P50 it's too strong to use in such a manner. If I remember I'll write a mini post on how to use and build up P50 sometime this week.

And... ahem Buttercup, no pics of the Deciem Mecca Shock!

Welcome back Vintage, good to hear the Ordinary serums are agreeing (sort of) with you!

banivani, I was supposed to move to Stockholm years ago and did a lot of language prep and reading the 'classics' (Fogelström, Moberg, and Larsson Confused) in anticipation (for everyday life) but it fell through at the last minute. It's not that different from Dutch tbh, Danish sounds like Frisian to me (technically a different language to Dutch but similar and somewhat understandable) which they speak up north here and much of the grammar structure in Scandi languages is similar. Anyhow, still much enamoured by the Swedes.

Random Scandi question, do you happen to have any knowledge/experience with the Swedish Stockings tights, spotted some last week (the Tencel ones, so not really pantyhose but the thicker sort). Am usually ridiculously loyal to Wolford, and more recently Fogal, so wondered if these were any good and am easily swayed by pro-environment arguments.

Not a fan of dill but it is rather ridiculous how things you like to eat make skincare appealing. Evil marketing geniuses

I think there are a few threads on the AB Reddit regarding snailgate but in comparison to MN they're all dreadfully polite and use the word 'shade' a tad too much and instantly remind me I'm now officially old or at the very least not American. Anyhow, after the medieval battle snails I'm not expecting a reply from CH anytime soon. Incidentally did see her latest video I blame YouTube autoplay where she made some weird announcement about no longer being sponsor free despite making a big thing of it last year due to 'changes' and that she'd be charging companies if they wanted her to test things in isolation Confused. (Park personal attacks elsewhere, please, MNHQ can get thread zapping happy when it comes to CH).

californiaburrito, are you basically asking after sunscreen? You didn't fill out the form completely, what skin type are you (you only listed conditions not type)?

mint/jo, I like the Japanese (animal hair) brushes but they're really highly priced and a bit of an effort to source. Have heard good things about Japonesque though, which should be easier to find in the UK, think their short handled (kabuki-like) bronzer brushes are well regarded. Otherwise, the Zoeva 101 is pretty good too.

@bananafish81 , Flowers. I know it’s tough going and PCOS is no fun even without all of the fertility stuff on top. I was going to suggest you go pretty basic as the likelihood would be that you become pregnant within the next year or so by the time you’d be done breastfeeding your skin would be in such a different state all previous efforts are long forgotten. Seeing as you don’t know where this ship will strand I can certainly understand the need to tackle all this but at the same time I think we need to be realistic that your skin is at the whim of hormones so there’s only so much you can do with that currently.

Please see previous tirades for non-prescription use of tret but more importantly the dose you’re on is a starter dose that you build up gradually to an ever increasing dose (which is usually hard to tolerate for most for prolonged periods of time). By the time you get there you might not be able to use it anymore (if pregnancy does happen, hopefully) and you’d be forced to start all over again (as pregnancy and all that it entails plus time in between will change the state of your skin) so it feels rather useless to do now when everything is so uncertain, on top of that for acne, Retin-A isn’t the favoured drug (Differin is, it’s similar to Retin-A but slightly different and less sensitising/clogging/drying) and it’s at a higher strength. In other words, beyond the whole grey/illegal mumbo jumbo surrounding off prescription use and dare I even ask if you’re using a stand-alone broad spectrum SPF50 I just don’t see much point in using this currently.

A few things stood out from your form but mostly this: ‘crepey dehydration lines’, this sounds more like over-exfoliation than classic dehydration and the use of Pixi Glow Tonic, Liquid Gold, and a Clarisonic Brush (and no sunscreen!) further give me ground to these suspicions. You’re attacking your skin very harshly and eschewing the actives that are more beneficial to oily/acne prone skin. Added to that, whilst offering it a lot in terms of hydrating products it doesn’t sound like it’s making much of a dent, when you’re at a point of compromised skin barrier due to over-exfoliation you can see the effect that hydrating agents like HA will end up pulling moisture from your deeper skin reserves instead of from the atmosphere and delivering it there (this also happens with severely dry people in desert like conditions) causing further dehydration. Does this sound like what’s happening with you?

Wrt products/routine I can sort of give two options, one keeping in mind the possibility of pregnancy that you can then continue to use without issue or one with a heavier set of actives that you’d have to stop and start up again. I don’t mind outlining both either, you can then mix and match and stretch out to including stronger actives when you feel like it. Just let me know if the above wrt over-exfoliation aligns with how you’re assessing your skin, as this will determine product and ingredient recs.

Wrt to sugar and PCOS, I am quite evangelical about it, mostly because it has made such a massive difference to me. While there’s definite evidence that changing diet wrt sugar and high-GI foods (and sometimes dairy) helps greatly, I’m also aware that people with PCOS are rarely alike and there’s a huge amount of variation. It doesn’t sound like you struggle with insulin intolerance so this might just not apply to you so for once I'm not going to be too hard on the chocolate but I would still suggest the high % stuff instead with natural sugar alternatives if you must.

Hi bo, I actually 'fessed up to face theory this morning and sent them an email letting them know. I've told them I'm happy to pay for the extra item. I like the product, it seems to last well so is good value so I would RP anyway. I didn't actually realise they were a fairly new start up. They haven't replied yet but hopefully I'll get a response tomorrow Smile

I'm not loving LRP anthelios spf at all so I'm going to relegate it to my holiday stash and switch to biore watery essence for daily use. Question for you all though, am I better off going for the new 2017 formulation rather than the 2015? Also, where do you all order from for the best delivery speeds?

yongnian · 13/03/2017 19:34

Hello everyone. Just catching up.

Pupsiecola · 13/03/2017 19:38

I bought the P50 from here. Didn't put that yesterday as couldn't remember, couldn't find receipt and had to wait til I was hope to Google...

hollinhurst84 · 13/03/2017 19:40

I'm tempted to try one of the face theory moisturisers next. Enjoying the Avene one I bought, it's light but more moisturising than I thought
Chin breakout AGAIN Angry so I'm back to the penance of cleanse, acnecide and moisturise. Repeat but swap for retinol PM. Joy Grin

Pupsiecola · 13/03/2017 20:11

I just used an Avene one whilst I was away in Poland and it broke me out and that rarely happens.

Tsmummy08 · 13/03/2017 20:15

Was there a Eucerin daily moisturiser that someone liked or am I losing my marbles? Hyaluron? Still on my quest for a nice daily moisturiser for dry, "mature" skin... The Active Formulas "Anti-age" one doesn't cut it unless I add an oil underneath...

And did anyone else try the TO glycolic? I did and really quite like it, although it's hard to gauge effectiveness after a couple of nights...

hollinhurst84 · 13/03/2017 20:19

I tried the neutrogena hydro something cream and that felt lovely but silicones in which my skin doesn't agree with
CH reviewed one a while ago which I was looking at. Link because the ingredients are listed http://www.carolinehirons.com/2016/10/bioderma-hydrabio-gelcreme-and-creme.html
(I know people don't always rate CH but the blog does give me ideas for new stuff I wouldn't have spotted)

eversions · 13/03/2017 20:58

I'm still stuck at work, but I've been informed that I've received a parcel from you, Enid! Thank you, can't wait to try it out :)

I made a mistake yesterday of using Head & Shoulders, which I haven't done for years... I've had an itchy scalp recently and thought I'd give it a go in case in helps. Instead, I took off my makeup last night to find lots of tiny irritated bumps on my face. Bad move Grin At first I thought maybe I had a funny reaction to the sunscreen I've been introducing, but I think that's unlikely and blame the shampoo even though I tried hard to avoid it touching my face. Ah well!
