Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether previous threads are worth reading, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Grin

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are in as much detail as possible, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

Make sure you've read the earlier threads (or at the very least the first one) so we're not being asked to answer previously raised questions. It takes a lot of time and effort to answer these queries and often the answers can be found in previous threads, but if you still have questions relating specifically to you, use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer one a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

Thanks! It's a joules harbour print with little silver bees on it - they had/have 25% off

userallusedup · 12/04/2017 15:49

Bali I had the same problem with TO, see my first post! I'm on a buying ban now unless I run out of anything. I did notice that the beauty bay sells TO and you only need to spend £15 for free shipping which may help me in the future with my 'fill the cart' issues.

I'm using TO Vit c in the morning as recommended here and it's working well so far, no issues with putting make up over the top.

I only started using a standalone SPF since reading these threads as prior to that I presumed my makeup (IT Cosmetics CC cream with SPF 50 that claims to be broad spectrum) would be enough, but as I'm an actives user I've started using Ultrasun SPF 50 for face before makeup, and will probably try the Biore watery one when that's finished.

Which brings me to another question for Bo or anyone else knowledgable - what do you think of powder sunscreens? I have a Peter Thomas Roth mineral powder SPF 45 that claims to be broad spectrum. I wouldn't use it alone but it would it be any good as a top up over makeup? I live in the north uk, not much of an outdoorsy person & rarely sweat (am usually cold even when everyone else is warm!) but I was thinking for barbecues or having lunch/drinks outside etc in the summer when I might need to top up but would already have a face full of up makeup on.

userallusedup · 12/04/2017 15:56

Forgot to say your brows look great Ollivander, I'm always jealous of nice brows as I have next to none thanks to over plucking when younger.

And good luck with the interview Pupsie!

botemp · 12/04/2017 19:47

The Toleriane Fluid moisturiser is not the one pictured in Purple15's pic, that's the Toleriane Ultra Fluid. The original Fluid contained less possible irritants and for unfathomable reasons has been discontinued but is still for sale in places (and appears not to be discontinued in the US at all Envy). The Toleriane Ultra Fluid isn't terrible but it contains silicones and shea butter, ingredients that can be clogging/irritating to some so I generally rec the Eucerin UltraSensitive for combo/oily as a Toleriane Fluid alternative.

TO does indeed have a Nia, Pupsie, but I think it's probably not a like for like with the PC. Glossier (which are supposedly launching in the UK sometime this year) have something that's the most similar iirc. I know the Naruko Magnolia line (of which I like the overnight gelly a lot) has a high % Nia across the range, the toner I think being the highest at 5%. I have also been looking at Active Formulas where you can buy it in a tiny tube (as a powder) and add to you moisturiser or similar as it dissolves in anything water based. Hope the interview went well!

Althea, can you take a picture of your cicaplast?

Asos also sells TO (for which the threshold for free shipping is even lower if you're in the UK I think), and Victoria Health also sell it. Think there was another who recently started selling it but can't remember who it was now...

I know powder sunscreens are very popular in Japan (to use to top up makeup) but personally, I avoid them as I'm not 100% convinced on their efficacy. I know in the US they are extra scrutinised and have to comply with different testing regulations.

Sorry, last bit was in reply to usedup.

A bit red (just applied TO 1% and it's strong!) but this is what the eyebrow tint settles to as it can look a bit dark at first when it stains the skin. And I have no makeup on!

Anyone going to clarify the spf indoors all day question for me?? Hmm

purple15 · 12/04/2017 20:23

Thank you botemp.
They are all so similar.
I have been using all your recommendations except the Paula's choice which I will add shortly. My skin in looking very nice.
I will fill in the update form shortly with the products I'm using.

Ollivander84 · 12/04/2017 20:24

mint - I wouldn't if I wasn't leaving the house

botemp · 12/04/2017 20:30

Yes, indoors too. The reason I wear sunscreen year round is mostly for the protection against UVA rays and they reach indoors (unless you happen to live in a UV protected house which is pretty rare).

Thanks olli and bo

JDSTER · 12/04/2017 21:02

Mint sun rays penetrate glass so unless you're indoors and no exposure to natural light you could argue spf required. I just use it every day now regardless, part of the routine. Taking spf- I bought LRP anthelios www.boots.com/la-roche-posay-anthelios-ultra-light-sun-cream-fluid-spf-50-plus-50-ml-10169886 used for the first time at the weekend and my face was like an oil slick by lunchtime!

Really disappointed. I think I'll try returning to Boots. I love Biore watery essence, which I continue to use but thought I'd try anthelios for a summer spf/suitable for holidays. Any other recommendations for the oily of skin which fit the same brief as anthelios?

The ordinary is now being sold in a dept store in my city. I haven't seen it yet so I don't know how much of the range they'll carry. The brand seems to be expanding far and wide at the moment.

Hi pupsie. I've got TO niacinamide (has zinc in too) I don't love it. I'm back using at a few nights a week now after going off it for a month or so. I don't feel like it does anything for my skin. My colleague is just back from states and got me new LRP toleriane cleanser and this moisturiser www.laroche-posay.us/toleriane-double-repair-moisturizer-3337875545792.html#start=8 with niacinamide which I'll start using at night. The cleanser also has niacinamide (Dr Sam got it and reviewed it in her recent 3 products from US video).

JDSTER · 12/04/2017 21:03

Blushyou got your answers Mint- took me so long to post!

mintmagnummm · 12/04/2017 21:18

Thanks jdster. Have u tried the anthelios anti shine dry touch one?

AltheaThoon · 12/04/2017 21:37

Here it is bo as requested. Is it the right one? I won't use the Ultra Fluide; I'll wait to buy the Eucerin Ultra Sensitive.

olderthanyouthink · 12/04/2017 21:49

JDSTER that's the same SPF that I've just received hmm... even if my face is dehydrated the middle of my face and eye area still is oily. This doesn't bode well.

JDSTER · 12/04/2017 21:57

Oh dear older Maybe you'll have better luck Hmm.

EnidButton · 12/04/2017 22:04

Althea You can take the LRP fluide back. Just say you got the wrong one and you want to swop.

EnidButton · 12/04/2017 22:06

That cicaplast looks the same as mine btw. Just checked my spare one that's still in the box and no mention of spf on the box or leaflet or tube.

AltheaThoon · 12/04/2017 22:06

Will do Enid. I'm becoming quite the regular in Boots now!

EnidButton · 12/04/2017 22:12

This is the leaflet from the cicaplast b5 baume. It does say there are two different types. You have the one I really like and find to be very good.

AltheaThoon · 12/04/2017 22:31

Thanks Enid. The leaflet that came with mine has every language but English! Bo, which of the two did you think would be best for me?

userallusedup · 12/04/2017 22:50

I would not have thought of using SPF if I was staying inside all day, but will make sure I use it now. I'm sure my skin would be in much better condition if I'd been diligent with sunscreen - even when I lived overseas in a hot, dry climate I didn't bother with it much & it was after that my skin started misbehaving with the excessive oiliness and blocked pores, breakouts etc. Though I'm lucky I didn't do any more drastic damage when I think about it.

Bo the Peter Thomas Roth powder SPF is from the US so hopefully would be well tested and effective but I'll try the bioderma spray as well, I've gone from not really caring about sunscreen to being obsessed with it!

I've been using TO nia since before Christmas and I've definitely had fewer breakouts of those annoying little whiteheads I used to get, so I think it's doing something.

userallusedup · 12/04/2017 23:26

Hmm I've just had an email from Deciem - I wrote to them ages ago asking for help with a routine and had given up on a reply but this is what they suggest:

AM
Cleaner
SubQ Anti-Age
Niacinamide
SubQ Eyes
NMF

PM
Cleaner
Azelaic Acid
Vitamin C Suspension or Advanced Retinoid or Salicylic Acid (alternate)
SubQ Eyes
Rose Hip Seed Oil

I think I prefer the one I've got with Vit c in the morning, & I feel az acid combined with vit c or SA would be a bit much? But it seems az acid can be used with pretty much anything according to them. Also not sure about NMF in the morning for oily skin but I've yet to try that so maybe it's not as heavy duty moisturising as it sounds.

EnidButton · 13/04/2017 00:05

Quick Hair related post. I'm really impressed with the humble Aussie 3min miracle. Haven't bought it for years. Used it today (without any extras like colorphlex or a elasticizer), and it's really good. Very soft ends, light feeling, no frizzy bits and it smells good. I'll be buying it more often. I used the Reconstructor one because I liked the smell and I think it's the original one that I use to use years ago. Not sure what the difference is with the other types apart from scent.

Spotted there's a new range of shampoos and conditioners from L'Oréal called Botanicals. They smell amazing. Reminded me a bit of the Aveda range. Kind of herbal. Anyone tried them?
