Which Mattress do you use?

We bought a very expensive mattress 4yrs ago that was meant to be superb! it isn't and I ache all over in all the pressure points. We now want to buy a new mattress as i can't stand the discomfort any longer. (I sleep well on the guest bed which has a completely different mattress that is about 6yrs old.

DH has said we should go for memory foam, but i keep hearing they get very hot etc and i'm one of those people that sweat and drench the mattress if its slightly too warm at night.

What mattresses do you all use? what would you recommend?

We bought a new mattress just before Xmas and we love it.

It's a spring mattress but covered in memory foam.

We were told not to go for full memory foam as they don't last as long.

The memory foam takes some getting used to, but we love it now.
OH has said that since getting it, he hasn't woken up with any aches and pains.

We went for a medium firm mattress, but essentially, I let OH choose.

This might be what you have and don't like, but we have a Vi Spring and absolutely love it. It is firm and I love it - we sleep so well on it in the fortnight since we got it!

I have an iGel and I love it, it's so comfy and I often lay my head down and the next thing I know it's morning. It has ceramic beads in it to help regulate temperature and stop you getting too hot.

Currently we have the Silentnight Pocket Zing.

We bought a Vi-Spring 15 years ago. It is still as good as new, not a single dip or lump. It will be good for another 15, easily.

It was very expensive, but far, far cheaper than replacing a cheaper one every few years. Forget memory foam and all the gimmicks, just buy the best quality pocket spring you can afford.

i've just seen the VI spring mattress online an eye wartering £2010 and we need a superking size eek!

there really are so many out there its mighty confusing. The one we've got is supposed to be a pocket sprung with a speshew layer on top well the layer is all flat now and feels like i'm sleeping on a board.

We have a john Ryan by design mattress and love it! Comparable to vi sprung in how it's made but not as £££. Still not cheap though! Check out their website, it's very informative.

Alittle- which one of the JR's have you got?

We have a vi spring mattress and it's amazing - I never sleep as well anywhere else now. We got ours medium on my side and firm on dhs side and that works well for us

Another question is anyone can help - How do you know wether you need a firm, medium or soft mattress?

I knew I liked a firm mattress so we got firm. But you can try them out in the shop.

Also go by weight. The man in the shop told me 'there's nothing of you!' (slightly odd as I am size 12 and very normal sized indeed) and so I should have a medium. But I persisted and said no I definitely wanted firm and am very pleased with it.

He also asked how heavy my husband was as weight has something to do with it - if you're over XX stone (dunno how much) you really SHOULD have a firm one to stop it being squashed or something.

Anyway, my husband's quite big and I'm normal sized and a firm is bloody lovely. But try them in the shop to see what you like.

We have a superking bed which really helps us sleep. I'm a tiny 5ft 1" but my husband is tall and broad so we need space.
We have a Tempur Cloud Platinum mattress and have had it for over a year now. My husband has bad sciatica and really suffers with his back. This bed has massively improved his sleep. We love it.
You need to make sure you get the right base or bed frame for whatever mattress you get as this will also effect your comfort levels.

I'm 5ft 1 and weigh 9 and half stone. DH is 11 stone. Does that mean ideally a medium/soft?

Smoothies - we have the artisans natural. I had several chats with the advisors who advised it would be the best suited to us (and came in below the budget I gave them). Really pleased with the mattress and service! Highly recommend them!

JR website is brilliant for becoming informed

We've spent ££££'s on tempur and fell out of love very quickly and both became very achy

We have IKEA now - researched on JR for types of mattress/what to look for and got their spring mattress that has lots of natural fibres (DH is a sweaty hit in bed hence tempur being no good)

We got the firm one for DHs back issues - I struggle with it but have eventually adjusted

The spare is also IKEA but their mid range, sprung with a foam layer - I like this one better but it would mean sleeping in separate beds! tempting in some snorey nights

IKEA have a 90 day return and their advisor said they really do honour it and the mattresses get donated to charity
