What glasses are people wearing these days?

I'm due an eye test, and pretty sure I'm going to need new glasses. I hate wearing my glasses currently and usually wear lenses, so I want to get something nice and reasonably fashionable. I don't get new glasses often and can't take advantage of 2 for 1 offers or anything as my prescription is very strong and I need the lenses thinned down a lot, which is expensive.

I'm early 30s and have a long narrow face and long-distance brown hair with no fringe. I don't think I could pull off big hipster-type frames but try to generally keep up with wear fashion is heading.

Help me get it right!

How strong Gwen? Like another poster upthread, I'm -11, and I have high refractive index lenses (1.74 - also, I kinda hate the phrase "having the lenses thinned" cause it implies that they do something to ordinary lenses to shave them down, which they don't Grin), and I'm still told that rimless aren't an option for me. Well, they probably could make them, but really they're too heavy and thick for it to work well, and they'd probably look terrible anyway.

I wear these and love them. Got then half price with voucher www.specsavers.co.uk/glasses/bo-0181?sku=30265479

I have these two. Asda, £99.00 for both, I am short sighted and have astigmatism, so that was incredibly cheap. I think they're now about £120.00 for two, but that's with the prescription fulfilled, still very cheap!

Foisme the black ones come in grey too (and pink too). I looked crap in the grey ones though.

TheOtherSock - no, sorry, my prescription is much less than that. I did think they did something to ordinary lenses.

MiladyThesaurus · 12/02/2017 14:46

I couldn't get rimless glasses (and my prescription is only -7). Even with hugh refractive index lenses (1.74) the edges are still noticeably thick.

It looks absolutely fine if I get plastic frames but would look horrible in rimless.

TheOtherSock · 12/02/2017 14:49

To be fair to you Gwen, a) it's largely irrelevant from a customer's point of view whether it's a different material or just a different process, and b) most people talk about getting lenses thinned, rather than about getting thinner lenses. It's entirely pedantry on my part - the reason it bothers me is that I hate to think of people feeling like they're being conned by opticians selling them exactly the same lenses but cut a bit thinner Grin

Rimless glasses are great for most people's prescription - my dad's -6 and loves his.

Thanks Milady - I thought I'd hunted everywhere for cats eye in grey but must have missed them. In the end I sold a couple of vital organs to pay for Cutler and Gross.

MiladyThesaurus · 12/02/2017 15:02

TBH, the tom ford ones aren't actually cheap, especially not when you buy the bloody expensive lenses. DH is always shocked at how much my glasses cost (but he just buys ordinary lenses).

BorisJohnsonsHair · 12/02/2017 15:04

I've bought lots of pairs from selectspecs.com. they're brilliant value for spares. Not sure if they do thinning though. My last pair (large black frames) cost me £6 a pair! They take about 10 - 14 days to arrive.

Good way to try out a new style maybe?

MoreProseccoNow · 12/02/2017 21:11

I've also got a high prescription & it usually costs me £300+ for new glasses.

I got my last pair from Boots opticians, as they had an offer on for 1/2 price glasses when you join their contact lens scheme. So I got a lovely designer pair for £150, plus triple advantage card points.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 12/02/2017 21:24

I got mine from boots and went for a pair of oversized sunglasses as a 1/2 price second pair. I also got a voucher for 50% off another pair of glasses if purchased within 3 months

I know Michael Kors gets a bit of a slating, but these are really nice and subtle i think
