Is 50 too old to wear trainers this spring?

I'm stuck in a style rut. I have some very lovely winter boots but in the spring I revert to loafers which seem a bit safe.
I was thinking maybe trainers or pumps might be a bit more trendy.
Adidas Gazelle or navy leather Superga?

My teens will ridicule me but I can live with that.
I have decent dark skinnies and some ok 7/8 trousers.

50 is never too old!

I am nearly 52 and wear Converse.

AmethystRaven · 09/02/2017 16:00

My MIL is in her 70s and always wears trainers, I don't think anyone has ever batted an eyelid!

Fingalswave · 09/02/2017 17:13

Of course you can wear whatever you like at any age!

I personally have chosen not to wear trainers since I turned 50 or so because I have put on weight and have a big bust, and they personally make me look a bit "slumped" somehow. I think I look a bit better in a more structured shoe with a small heel. Still wear trainers at home with yoga pants though and I'm sure others over 50 look much better in trainers than I do; it depends on the individual.

I think the combination of a formal winter coat or jacket and trainers can sometimes look a bit odd, so it depends on the rest of your wardrobe.

Btw, I was in Germany last week and saw lots of middle-aged women wearing expensive looking hybrid trainers - part shoe, part trainer - with thicker heels in suede and patent leather. They all looked very stylish.

Go for more of a pump to start with if you feel more comfortable . Superstars etc are tricky as my dd wears them so I've stopped . I still wear trainers but more subtle ones like black nikes or superga pumps . I have some lovely river island leopard pumps I wear with black jeans and looks good . I'm 42

neveradullmoment99 · 09/02/2017 19:08

Too old for a pair of trainers??? Really???
I am 49 and havent ever thought there was an age limit and certainly not at 50. Wear any trainers you like. I bought a pair of ash jodie's. I have lots of palladium trainers also. Wear whatever makes you happy :)

Trills · 09/02/2017 19:10

No age is too old to wear trainers

Wear them however you think they look and feel nice

mindmyarse · 09/02/2017 19:13

I didn't know there was an age limit. I'm 53 and wear them.
My mother is 81 and wears hers from time to time.

TheNaze73 · 09/02/2017 19:24

No one is ever too old for vintage Adidas.

Liiinoo · 10/02/2017 00:05

I am 55 and would only ever wear trainers if I was going to or from the gym.

megletthesecond · 10/02/2017 00:15

Never too old.

Nike Pegasus til I die. Have fitted me like a dream since I was a teen.

echt · 10/02/2017 08:40

Yonks ago, about 30+, a boyfriend's 80+ dad said trainers transformed his life, as they did many older people .

Stylewise, there is no age.

For myself, at 60+, I do not wear trainers unless running.

MinesaPinot · 10/02/2017 09:05

I've got trainers for the gym and Bloch dance trainers for Zumba. Had to wear my Bloch's last year when I broke my foot and caught sight of myself in a shop window - I had on long denim shorts, "hides everything" t-shirt and my trainers - l nearly passed out at how scruffy I looked and had to go and have wine to recover

However I have set my heart on a pair of Adidas Superstar 80's - out shopping tomorrow so will investigate.

I'm 54 by the way

BadToTheBone · 10/02/2017 09:34

I'm 50 this year, there's never been a year of my life where trainers haven't featured. I'm usually found in boots in the winter and pumps or trainers in the summer. For me your question is a very strange one tbh, but then I've always been an athlete so everyone around me is the same.

lurkingfromhome · 10/02/2017 09:45

This kind of question always makes me quite sad. Like there are a whole host of women out there thinking that by the time you hit 50 (or 30, 35, 40) you have to be rocking an M&S twin set in an inoffensive shade of lavender and nice sensible shoes, as any alternative is a bit too "mutton" (a hateful concept).

Fuck that. I'll be wearing skinny jeans, trainers and my leopard skin fake fur coat until they cart me to my grave. OP, wear your trainers with love and pride. No such thing as too old (with a very few exceptions).

Floisme · 10/02/2017 09:47

Just to add, I don't wear trainers myself (unless Boden slip-ons count and I'm sure they don't!), not because I'm 60 but because I don't much like the look of them. I prefer brogues or plimsolls - your loafers sound pretty stylish too. So yes, of course you can wear them but there are lots of alternatives.

Cocolepew · 10/02/2017 09:55

I have loads , I wear them mostly in the spring/summer . I like to wear them with rolled up skinny jeans. I wear Converse trainer socks with them, they are much thicker than usual trainer socks and dont show. I got them in TK Maxx

melonribena · 10/02/2017 12:08

My 73 year old dad has recently discovered Skechers! He now has 4 pairs and loves them!

Whathaveilost · 10/02/2017 14:41

I'm nearly 52 and my teenage lads take great delight in choosing trainers for me! I've noticed they are never cheap though!

I bought a pair of Solomon's for the gym on Tuesday and both lads nodded sagely at me as if I'd made a good choice without their input!!

BakeOffBiscuits · 10/02/2017 17:08

No You Are Not Too Old fro trainers.

Plus, trainers are very comfortable

Deathraystare · 10/02/2017 17:27

If they are comfy why not? I see loads of wrinklies wearing them. I am actually older than you but I would wear them.

ArseyTussle · 10/02/2017 17:39

I'm 46 and skipping the light fantastic in these gorgeous fellas. Very comfy, excellent quality, and crucially not sporty looking. They are Selected Femme, and Asos and John Lewis sell them.

I saw a very stylish lady recently wearing her skinny jeans and trainers and she must have been 70ish. She looked great.

Diamonddealeroncemore · 10/02/2017 18:54

I'm 56 and I wear trainers almost all the time. Occasionally I wear ankle boots but I have wide feet and my trainers are the most comfortable things.
