Smokey eye products...

I've got a John Lewis voucher to spend and have decided I could do with some decent eye makeup. I'm not particularly skilled or knowledgeable in this area!

I've got a night out tomorrow and my plan is to go to JL in the afternoon and get the counter staff to do a smoky eye look for me, then buy the products (assuming I like them).

So firstly - is smokey eye still a thing? Or am I going to look like a throwback to the mid-noughties (which is when I last wore eye makeup)? If it's not a thing anymore then what do I go for (semi glamorous look for a 29 year old)?

And then, which counter should I go to, what products do I need, and roughly how much should I expect to pay?

Thank you in advance!
