Is Balayage over?

I am 44 and for the past year have had balayage which I've loved as my hair is very dark but it's been lovely having the blonde ends especially with a toner.
I am due to have my hair done but don't know whether to have the same again or whether that ship has sailed. What do you think?

I only just heard about it in November for the first time . I think it looks lovely so would say go for it.

I hope not! I had it done yesterday....grey though. My mother was horrified! I, however, love it.

I like highlights but ones to the root are so much upkeep!

As it's generally done to suit you and your natural colour (as opposed to pastel hair colours etc), I can't see it vanishing soon. It's very flattering and low maintenance.

I love the look when it's fresh, but it can look odd when the toner fades out... i.e. When the ends are too many shades lighter than the root. I don't love it on straight hair like mine. It looks lovely on hair with a wave or curl though.

I have approximated it to my own needs by having tonal highlights but only on the underneath- none across the top. You get the texture and dimension but it works on my straight hair.

I have very dark brown hair and had balayage and ombre for the past 3 years. Just gone back to dark because I was bored of it and fancied a change.

Judging by the amount of balayages my hairdresser does still, it's not over.

Just had my roots done chocolate brown with a lovely blonde through the rest so it's kind of caramel!

Next time I think I'll go for a mahogany and blonde

That's really funny - I've never heard of balayage and clicked on this out of curiosity - having just googled it it seems like it's remarkably similar to how my hairdresser's been doing my colour (no foils, painted on, mix of shades, blending from the natural haircolour outwards) for years

I'd never heard of it until this weekend as I want something similar to what Christinedaae17 above has.

I'm booked in for March 14th and can't wait.

I'm losing my 25+ year of boxed red and going for something completely different. Hoping for this kind of thing:

I do it myself by letting my highlights grow out each time 🙊 Saves lots of money as I only ha e my hair done twice a year.

I think it's one of those trends which will never go away now.

Beware the 'low maintenance' aspect though. I think it looks lovely when it's a good one done fairly recently, but IMO left to grow out too far and left too long un-toned it really does just look like grown a out bleach job.

This is my hair currently. I've been using the same Ferria shade for donkeys years, but foursome reason they seem to have changed the formula and it's horrible and brassy looking now.

I know red is a bitch to cover/remove so I'm a bit nervous but hate this brassy red which I think is just aging me (and I don't need any help there thanks very much!)

Does anyone think what I am trying to achieve will work? The colourist seems to think it will be ok but I'm still nervous!

Dave- You would be better starting your own thread as everyone on here is talking balayage rather than colour correction.

Dave is asking if balayage will work over her existing boxed red and wants to get similar shades done that a PP on this thread has when she has hers done. I don't know as I'm clueless with colour but hopefully someone will know

I've going back for more balayage next week I don't care if it's had it's day, it's so low maintenance and I like having some darker honey colours through my hair.

Was toying with some 90s revival thick chunky badger stripes & a 'Rachel' cut (nah, not really).

I'm nearly convinced to do this, I used to have blonde highlights but they've been growing out for 2 yrs since DC2 so now I have a balayage look by accident! My hair is very long, a very dark blonde naturally and a goldy blonde at the ends.

I was thinking about natural colour fading to grey or white blonde - or could I dye the natural colour darker then do a fade to red? I have no idea what the process is / what works

Botanicyour hair sounds lovely. Do they just paint in the lighter colours?

Dave might have been timing of your thread rather than spelling

I have got a wonderful hairdresser that I trust completely, I just let her get on with it. Used to get highlights done in several different shades (or is it tones?) then someone said she was good at dip dyeing hair so I asked about that and she just said 'lets do it'. Last time I went she refused to cut it as she didn't think it needed it.

But in answer to your question, yes, she just tells me what colours she thinks - I agree - then she just plasters the dye on by hand, no faffing with foils or anything. It works really well as you can barely see when roots grow in. I think she's got magic powers. Good luck with yours, I think if you find someone you trust who is good with colour and will have an eye for what suits you (in line with what you want obvs) then you can't go wrong!

I think colour wise it will be fine Dave. Presumable they will cover your hair with a light-mid brown all over, I'd have thought, as your hair is already red that will give warmth to the brown, then I should think they'll paint the bayalage on after that. It'll take a while! Possibly you might have to do it in two steps - all over colour first then return after a week or so for Bayalage once your hair has had time to settle and be conditioned in between colour sessions. What's your natural hair colour? You don't want the base colour to be darker than your natural colour.

Unfortunately my natural colour these days is predominantly grey, I was brunette once upon a time though!

I think I'm going to put my trust in the colourist as although I haven't used him personally before, he seems to have a lot of good reviews, so fingers crossed!

Dave have you seen the hairdresser - I'm not a hairdresser but I had to grow out a red dye years ago when i wanted to go back to highlights, the hairdresser I had at the time wouldn't do it over red.
You could go darker maybe with a wash out toner and leave some of your lighter red bits (reversey!) then maybe when you've grown out your hair a bit you could have the bleach/high lift tint put in.

I have seen a colourist, and he seemed reasonably confident that he could cover my hair with a darkish colour and then lighten bits for that sort of caramelly look.

The thought of growing out my red fills me with horror as my natural colour is so grey now. It would look awful
