Ivanka Trump's coat

Can anyone identify this coat please? Bet it is uber-expensive. (I felt sorry for her having to walk across grass in those super spikey hells trotting alongside the mighty stride of the Donald)

Ratner's "total crap" publicity didn't work out so well.

Don't know that 'all publicity is good publicity' worked out brilliantly for Galliano, either.

KingMortificadosMistress · 03/02/2017 23:09

Don't think we are quite talking about the same thing here.

ageingrunner · 03/02/2017 23:17

Re the association with fascism, I meant more that the designer might find it personally distasteful that one of the trumps was wearing their clothes (for all I know the designer might be really into white nationalism though). I take your point re publicity though.

Lorelei76 · 03/02/2017 23:24

The designer said he was okay to dress the Dumps.
I don't have much money so I don't know a lot about this but Marc Jacobs said he won't dress the Dumps and he'd rather put his energy to anti Dump activities. Just sharing in case useful.

I've just realised I'm going to cry with laughter when I see a sign that says "no dumping".

bingohandjob · 03/02/2017 23:25

Publicity - "notice or attention given to someone or something by the media".

Showmethewaytogohome · 03/02/2017 23:49

Oh dear. Clear ranting happening re fashoon not be political. Hhhmmm of course it is. Dressing of the powerful and rich has always been political in that it reflects wealth and status. Designers have in the past 30 years been associated with politial and social movements think hamnet and gaultier etc.

Ivanka Trump is her father's first lady peeps. She is his Jackie O. If you feel his views and policies are repubnant she should not become a fashion icon. And no designer with any moral views regarding refugees. ..Muslims. ..women. .LGBT. ..Hispanics. ..blacks...would be associated with their 'brand' which is in essence the trump family

Showmethewaytogohome · 03/02/2017 23:51

Or alternatively when she makes jack boots trendy we can continue within the 'it's just fashoon view'

There's already been a bit of kerfuffle about designers declining to give clothes to Melania- not that they were asked, just they have come out and said it,

Apparently Michelle Obama got a lot of clothes for free, but Melania buys her off Net-a-Porter.

Tom Ford refuses to give freebies to First Ladies generally, as he thinks it sends the wrong message (his clothes are too expensive for a public ally funded person). He did however give Michelle Obama a free gown for an engagement at Buckingham Palace, because the First Lady should have something appropriate to wear and not be overshadowed.

Showmethewaytogohome · 04/02/2017 00:12

So some top designers do see dressing the trumps as a political issue

As there are so many designers who are wonen/lgbt/non white this should not be a suprise to you king

Jackie O or Eva Braun?

AnnaFiveTowns · 04/02/2017 08:01

I'm laughing at the irony of a PP saying Mezzanine should be on Jeremy Kyle.

I'm completely with you, Mezzanine. It's not "just a coat" - life is rarely that simple; that black and white; but Jeremy Kyle types often think it is.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 04/02/2017 08:16

Forgive me for being cynical but the business of fashion designers not giving Melania their clothes and being very vocal about can be seen just as publicity driven as clothing her for free.

Of course some are doing this because of their beliefs, but some might well be jumping on the bandwagon.

Floisme · 04/02/2017 09:09

That may be true but the mere fact that there's a bandwagon to jump on kind of illustrates that fashion and politics can be intertwined.

Ivanka Trump wore that coat in her capacity as unofficial first lady - and the occasion, let's not forget was the return of the remains of the US serviceman killed in the Yemen. I think there was rather more than a coat - or even heels - going on that day.

Mezzanineobssessed · 04/02/2017 14:32

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/ivanka-trump-clothing-dropped-nordstrum-department-store-grab-your-wallet-campaign-a7560566.html

I think it's beginning to happen slowly. I think there are way too many designers who would not want to be associated with Trumps. There is nothing classy when I look at Ivanka in that coat. All I see is a woman blatantly supporting a shit excuse of a man and that makes me very angry. I am amazed how people can keep fashion and Ivanka's politics separate? Fashion is a statement to me.
The link I posted is a clear indication that I am not alone in this thinking.
As for the Jeremy Kyle show, I don't watch TV generally or reality shows etc. I think they help normalise disgusting things like Trump.

Mezzanineobssessed · 04/02/2017 14:35

unofficial first lady
Is that a thing now? Hmm
I think I read there have been other First Ladies who weren't wives specifically. I have nothing against a daughter doing that role so long as the father ain't as creepy and inappropriate as Trump.

Floisme · 04/02/2017 15:52

Whether it's a thing or not, I'm not aware of any rule against Ivanka Trump taking on the First Lady role. But for me, the question is, what was she thinking to choose such a 'look at me' coat for that particular occasion?

She was there to honour a dead serviceman. If you're the bereaved family then you wear whatever gets you through but otherwise the first rule of dressing for such a sombre event is surely to not draw attention to yourself? I'm not saying you shouldn't wear anything expensive or designer but if ever there was a time for an understated piece of Ralph Lauren, it was then.

Very poor judgement - and I thought Ivanka was supposed to be the smart one of the family?
